Can you get travel insurance if you have atrial fibrillation?
It’s possible to get travel insurance for atrial fibrillation (AFib). However, you will probably need to use a medical specialist like JustCover. If you have AFib or another heart condition, we can help, even if you have a pacemaker. We can consider more than 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions.
Travel insurance for AFib includes:
- Protection for emergency medical expenses, including those linked to your condition.
- Cover if you have to be flown home or taken elsewhere for treatment after a medical emergency.
- Up to €10,000² protection for unexpected cancellation. Including if you have to cancel due to complications with atrial fibrillation.
- Help if your prescription medication is damaged, lost or stolen.
- Access to our 24/7 emergency medical helpline team. There when you need them.
- Plus, cover for personal liability, legal protection, your bags being stolen, and more.
Why do you need travel insurance if you have atrial fibrillation?
Travel knowing you're covered. It's that simple. Travel insurance for AFib means you won’t face costs of thousands of euros yourself if something goes wrong:
- The HSE says: “Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disturbance in Ireland.” While the Irish Heart Foundation claims, “1 in 4 people over the age of 50 are at risk of developing atrial fibrillation.” If you’re one of the thousands of people in Ireland who live with AFib, you could face complications on holiday.
- According to the Irish Heart Foundation, vigorous activities, dehydration and more can impact your heart condition on holiday. AFib Matters advises: “Comfortable travel is recommended and ideally avoid extreme temperatures (heat and cold) and high altitudes.”
- If you face issues on holiday, it’s important to be covered by travel insurance for atrial fibrillation. However, the Irish Heart Foundation warns: “Travel insurance for people with pre-existing conditions is more complicated”. Standard providers may turn you down. At JustCover, we can help as medical specialists. Declare your conditions, answer our simple medical questionnaire and then you’ll get your quote.
Are all types of atrial fibrillation covered?
Yes, at JustCover we can consider all types of atrial fibrillation. The types of AFib we can consider include:
- Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Where your episodes come and go. Normally stopping within 2 days.
- Persistent atrial fibrillation: Episodes of 7 days or longer.
- Long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation: When you’ve had the condition for longer than a year.
- Permanent atrial fibrillation: You’re always experiencing symptoms.
- Non-valvular atrial fibrillation: When you have the condition, but it’s not caused by a heart valve issue.
If you can’t see the type of atrial fibrillation you have, don’t worry. We could still help. Give our team a call to find out.
We can also help if you have other pre-existing conditions common with AFib. These include high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
What does JustCover’s atrial fibrillation travel insurance cover?
From cover for your medication if it’s stolen, to being flown back home after a medical emergency. Travel insurance for atrial fibrillation means you can go away knowing you’re protected.
It’s important to always read our travel insurance for AFib Policy Wording. This is where you’ll find full terms and conditions and any exclusions.

Do you need to declare atrial fibrillation on travel insurance?
It’s important that you let us know about any pre-existing medical conditions and complete our medical questionnaire accurately. That includes atrial fibrillation. If any details are missing or incorrect, it could affect your cover or any future claims.
A pre-existing medical condition is any condition covered by our medical warranty. Please tell us if you or anyone else named on this policy has:
- Taken prescribed medication, or received medical treatment or advice (in person or remotely) from a hospital, clinic, or GP in the last two years, or received or been offered palliative care;
- Been placed on a waiting list for treatment that might mean you need to cancel or cut short your trip;
- Been diagnosed with, or advised of, a terminal illness.

Always read our Policy Wording for full details, including any exclusions and terms and conditions. Then you can go ahead and buy travel insurance with AF, or save your quote for later.
What to expect in the medical questionnaire
We aim to make travel insurance for AFib as simple as possible. Our medical questionnaire is quick and easy to fill out. However, it can be helpful to have details of your medical history and any prescriptions on hand.
For travel insurance for atrial fibrillation, we may ask:
- Which type of AFib have you been diagnosed with?
- Which treatments are you having/have you had?
- Are you taking medication?
- Do you have a pacemaker?
- When did you last need emergency medical assistance?
- How often do you experience symptoms?
- Have you had a heart attack or a stroke?
How much does atrial fibrillation travel insurance cost?
If you’re buying travel insurance for atrial fibrillation, it may cost more than a standard policy. This is because there’s a higher chance of making a claim. For instance, if you experience a medical emergency or your medication is lost or stolen. However, if your condition is mild and well-managed, your premium is likely to be lower than for someone with more severe symptoms.
We will always tailor your quote to you. Factors impacting the price of travel insurance for atrial fibrillation include:
- Your age: Senior travellers tend to make more claims, so this could impact your quote.
- Where you’re going: Some destinations, such as the USA, have expensive healthcare systems. Making any claims higher.
- How long you’re off for: You’ll be less likely to claim on a weekend away, versus a month-long trip.
- If you need cover for medical aids or medication: In case you need to claim for them being lost or stolen.
- The severity of your atrial fibrillation: We’ll assess the chances of you needing to make a claim using our medical questionnaire.
Whether you have other pre-existing medical conditions: Common co-existing conditions with AFib include diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure.

Will an EHIC cover you for medical assistance related to atrial fibrillation while abroad?
Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you access to some emergency state medical care. This only applies in countries that are part of the scheme and won’t always be free. You’ll get treatment at the same price as locals. This includes some costs associated with your AFib.
The HSE advises that: “An EHIC does not replace travel insurance.” Your EHIC does not cover some important emergency services, such as medical repatriation. This can easily cost you thousands of euros without travel insurance. You also won’t have cover for your medication being stolen or unexpected cancellation. It’s important to take both your EHIC and travel insurance for AFib.

If you’re travelling with AFib, there are ways you can prepare for your trip. From talking to your medical team to getting travel insurance for atrial fibrillation. Get ready for your holiday:
- Speak with your doctor or medical team: This is important if you’re going on holiday with any pre-existing medical condition. Your doctor will be able to give you advice on whether it’s safe to go away. As well as any precautions and travel vaccinations. The Irish Heart Foundation says if you’ve had a heart attack or stroke, “it’s advisable not to go on long journeys or trips abroad for six to eight weeks”.
- Prepare your medication: AFib Matters says to “take all your medication with you and ensure you do not run out of tablets while away.” Take extra in case you’re delayed or lose some. Try not to keep it all in the same bag for this reason. Some countries have restrictions on taking medications in, so research this in advance.
- Think about what you’d do in an emergency: Research the medical facilities available where you’re going. Buy comprehensive travel insurance for atrial fibrillation and make sure you’ll be covered for any treatment you may need. You should also take your EHIC if visiting a country that accepts it. Pack details of your medical history, doctor and any medications. Carry your medical alert bracelet or ID card if you have one.
- Avoid things that might aggravate your condition: Your doctor can advise you on a full list of what to avoid. However, this will normally include hot/cold climates, high altitude and vigorous activities. AFib Matters advises: “Comfortable travel is recommended”. Plan plenty of breaks and avoid anything too strenuous.
Precautions to take when flying
There are lots of ways you can prepare for a flight if you have atrial fibrillation. These include:
- Check with your doctor that you’re safe to fly: AFib Matters says, “In general there is no reason why you cannot travel (including flying) if you have atrial fibrillation, but it is best to check with your doctor first.” Your doctor will also suggest any precautions you can take.
- Speak to your airline in advance: They may need you to get a fit-to-fly certificate from your doctor. You should also let them know if you need assistance at the airport or if you’re taking medical equipment on board.
- Know what to do if you have a pacemaker or ICD: The Irish Heart Foundation says, “DO remember to carry your identification card when travelling if you have an internal defibrillator or pacemaker, so that you can show this to security staff and ask to be hand-searched.” You should also speak to your doctor about this in advance.
- Be aware of time differences: These can impact when you take your medication. Speak to your doctor for advice on this and how to adjust your schedule.
- Take steps to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Speak to your doctor for advice on whether you’re at higher risk of DVT. Stay hydrated and avoid caffeine and alcohol. Ask your doctor for advice on exercises and any other precautions to take.
