What is travel insurance for over 75s?
It’s travel insurance that’s tailor-made for seniors who aren’t slowing down anytime soon. From lost bags to medical mishaps, over 75s travel insurance can be a financial safety net should the worst happen. But unlike standard travel insurance, it doesn’t make a fuss over the date of birth in your passport.
Whether you’re cruising, trekking or sightseeing, travel insurance for the over 75s keeps up with your plans. And because we cover over 1,300 medical conditions, it lets you focus on where you're going, not what might go wrong.
Why do you need over 75s travel insurance?
Travel insurance is a must-have for any holiday, whatever your age. But the older we get, the more important it becomes to prepare for unexpected health hiccups while travelling. If you're over 75, here’s why travel insurance deserves a prime spot on your holiday checklist:
- Pre-existing conditions are common. Nearly three-quarters of Irish adults aged over 58 have two or more chronic conditions. While your health won’t stop you from getting a policy with JustCover, it can make travel more complex.
- Accidents can happen when you’re away from home. One in three people over 65 in Ireland will experience a fall each year. One in five over 75 will have recurrent falls. Even a minor stumble abroad could result in costly treatment.
- Emergency medical costs abroad can be sky-high. The Department of Foreign Affairs warns that hospital bills away from home can run into thousands of euros. Medical repatriation back to Ireland may cost tens of thousands. Without insurance, you may be expected to pay upfront – even for emergency care.

How much does travel insurance for over 75s cost?
The cost of holiday insurance for senior travellers can vary. Premiums may rise slightly as you get older and your need for more comprehensive medical cover increases. But age is just one of the factors we consider when calculating your premium. We also look at:
- Medical conditions. Declaring pre-existing health conditions may increase your premium, but it’s vital to ensure you’re properly protected.
- Trip length. Longer trips typically cost more to insure.
- Destination. Some regions, like the USA or Australia, have higher medical costs. This is usually reflected in the cost of your travel insurance.
- Any extras you need. Add-ons like cruise cover, winter sports or gadget protection are there if you need them.
The amount you pay for your policy depends on your personal circumstances. It’s why we offer tailored quotes to make sure you get the right cover at the right price.
Why is travel insurance more expensive for people over 75?
Senior travellers are statistically more likely to need medical care while abroad. This increases both the frequency and cost of claims, which can impact the price you’ll pay.
Here’s why travel insurance for the over 75s may cost more:
- Pre-existing conditions are more common. The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) reports that nearly 75% of adults aged 58 and over live with two or more chronic health conditions. These can include heart disease, arthritis and diabetes – chronic conditions which may require treatment while travelling.
- Disabilities increase with age. According to the Central Statistics Office, over 27% of Irish adults aged 70–74 have a disability. That figure rises to 73% for women aged over 85. Disabilities can affect mobility, cognition and access to care abroad.
- Healthcare abroad can be costly. The Department of Foreign Affairs warns that even basic emergency care abroad can come with a hefty price tag.

Expert travel insurance recommendations from our team

"Turning 75 doesn’t mean slowing down. It often means exploring more – and for longer. Whether it’s a heritage trail through Lisbon or a family holiday in Florida, senior travellers are making the most of their retirement.
But travelling later in life also comes with unique considerations. Comprehensive travel insurance ensures you’re protected from medical emergencies, cancellations and unexpected mishaps. It can also cover pre-existing conditions, so you can focus on the adventure."
Peter Clark - JustCover Director
What our customers say
“We were disappointed when our previous travel insurer did not offer renewal on our annual insurance despite never having claimed. Nor could they offer us single trip insurance. JustCover was able to offer us the insurance at a great rate and without any fuss.”

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your travels:
- Pack smart. Bring what you need, but don’t weigh yourself down. Comfortable shoes, essential medications and a light day bag are your best travel companions.
- Sort your travel insurance as soon as you book. That way, you’re covered if an emergency forces you to cancel before you go.
- Choose flights that work for you. Give yourself plenty of time between connections. Airport assistance services can help with mobility or luggage – just ask when booking.
- Stay cool and hydrated. If you're heading somewhere warm, take breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water. A reusable bottle and a wide-brimmed hat go a long way.
- Stay connected. Bring a mobile phone that works abroad and save key contacts. Things like your accommodation, our emergency medical helpline and local emergency services.
- Go at your own pace. You don’t have to see everything in one day. Build in time to relax. After all, you’re on holiday!
Frequently asked questions about over 75s travel insurance
Are there age limits for travel insurance?
Not with JustCover! Our policies have no upper age limit. We can insure travellers over 85, and beyond. Taking the grandkids? We can cover children, too, as long as they’re travelling with an adult and named on the same policy. The only age limit we apply is for our winter sports add-on, which has an upper age limit of 65.
Are there limits on the length of trip for the over 75s?
Our annual multi trip policies do have trip limits, but these don’t depend on your age. They’re the same for everybody! And with single trip travel insurance, you can be abroad for 365 days depending on your destination.
Our annual multi-trip travel insurance allows you to travel as often as you like within a 12-month period, but with a duration limit on each individual trip. Silver or Gold would cover you for 45 days at a time. Black policies can cover unlimited trips of up to 55 days.
For full details, read our Policy Wording.
Should you consult your GP before travelling?
If you’re managing a long-term condition or have had recent changes to your health, it’s worth having a quick chat with your GP before you go. They can offer advice tailored to your destination. They can also help you plan any medications.
It also means you’ll be able to give us accurate details when arranging your over 75s travel insurance. If a condition isn’t declared and something happens on your trip, your cover might not apply. So it’s always better to check in and get everything sorted before you pack your bags.
Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as insurance?
Yes, it’s a good idea to have both. Applying for an EHIC allows Irish citizens to benefit from the health agreements between countries in the EU. But it doesn’t cover everything. For example, it doesn’t cover private treatment or cancellations. It won’t pay to get you home if you’re unwell.
That’s where travel insurance steps in. It fills in the gaps, so you’re covered for things like lost luggage, unexpected delays, or medical emergencies that go beyond what the EHIC includes.
Having both means you’re well-prepared to enjoy your trip, knowing the essentials are taken care of.
Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 75?
You won’t need a medical exam. But you will need to complete a short medical questionnaire when you get your quote. It’s quick, straightforward and can be done online at your own pace. If you’d rather speak to someone, you can also call us and go through it over the phone.
The questionnaire includes questions like:
- Have you been diagnosed with any medical conditions in the last two years?
- Are you currently taking any prescribed medication?
- Have you had any hospital visits, tests or procedures recently?
Depending on your answers, we may ask a few follow-up questions. That way, we can make sure your cover matches your needs.
Are mobility aids or medical equipment covered by travel insurance?
They are at JustCover. We know that mobility aids and medical equipment can be expensive to replace. It’s why our travel insurance covers you against the loss, theft, or accidental damage of your mobility aids and equipment.
All our travel insurance policies cover mobility equipment whilst you’re abroad. This includes wheelchairs, walking frames, sticks, supplies and equipment designed to help provide mobility.
Is your mobility aid particularly valuable? Add gadgets cover to protect single items, up to €2,000.
How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?
If something goes wrong, JustCover makes it easy to get help and start your claim. You’ll find all the details, including contact numbers and what documents are needed, on our Claims page.
Making a claim online is the quickest and easiest way to get started with your claim. But if you prefer, you can also do this by phone. You’ll be asked to provide:
- Your booking invoice
- Your insurance certificate
- A completed claim form
- Any relevant documents, like medical certificates or cancellation invoices
It’s best to notify us within 30 days of returning from your trip if you think you’ll need to make a claim. And if it’s an emergency while you’re abroad, there’s a 24/7 helpline ready to assist.
What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?
Call the emergency services in the country you’re in if you need immediate care. Then contact JustCover’s Emergency Helpline as soon as possible:
- From Ireland: (01) 263 6895
- From outside Ireland: +353 1 263 6895. This line is for medical emergencies only and is available 24 hours a day.
Our team can help arrange treatment, liaise with hospitals and advise on what to do next. They’ll also let you know what documents you might need for your insurance claim later on.
It’s a good idea to keep your policy number and emergency contact details with you while travelling, just in case.
How can over 75s get cheaper travel insurance?
Travel insurance can cost a bit more as you get older. But there are smart ways to keep it affordable without cutting corners.
Choose the right type of policy. If you’re only heading to the USA once this year, a single trip policy might be more cost-effective than an annual one. But if you’re planning several European breaks, an annual multi-trip policy could save you money in the long run.
Don’t pay for extras you won’t use. Check what’s included in your policy. If you’re not going skiing or cruising, skip those add-ons. Tailoring your cover to your actual plans helps keep costs down.
Travel smart. Consider destinations with lower healthcare costs. That can help reduce your premium, too.
When should over 75s buy travel insurance?
You should buy your policy as soon as you book your trip. Buying travel insurance early means you're covered straight away. That’s important, because illness or unexpected events could stop you from travelling altogether. The sooner you’re protected, the better – especially if your trip involves expensive flights, cruises, or pre-paid accommodation.
Even if your holiday is months away, early cover lets you tick one thing off your travel to-do list.
Can you extend your policy if your travel plans change or you need to stay longer?
With JustCover, you can extend your policy. If your plans change before you leave Ireland, you can ask to extend your policy. Just contact us using the details in your policy document. An extra premium may apply.
Already abroad? We’ll consider extensions case by case, but only if no claims have been made or are in progress.
If your trip is extended due to a covered event, like a medical emergency, your cover will automatically continue for up to 30 days while you get home safely. Read our Policy Wording for more details.
Can you include a carer on your policy?
Yes, and it’s easier than you might think. The simplest way to insure both you and your carer under one policy is with our group travel insurance. That way, if your carer becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, you’re both protected.
It’s often more cost-effective than taking out separate policies. And if you ever need to make a claim, there’s far less paperwork to worry about.
There’s no upper age limit, and you don’t need to live at the same address. Just ask for group cover when you get your quote. We’ll take care of the rest.
