Do you need travel insurance for the USA?

Travel insurance for the USA is a true holiday essential. With sky-high medical costs, unpredictable weather and the risk of cancelled plans, it isn’t just a nice-to have while you’re exploring this exciting (and expensive) destination. Here’s why:

  • Covers emergency medical costs. Without travel insurance, an unexpected trip to a US hospital won’t just dent your holiday budget. A simple ambulance ride in the US can cost over €1,000. A broken leg might set you back as much as €6,000. A three-day hospital stay can cost $30,000, and the EHIC won’t cover you.
  • Covers cancellation. Once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York planned? The city that never sleeps is home to iconic hotels and bucket-list experiences. But cancelling your trip could mean losing thousands in non-refundable costs. USA travel insurance with cancellation cover can help reimburse you for prepaid costs. That’s if you have to cancel for a covered reason, such as illness or a family emergency.
  • Covers trip disruption. From wildfires to hurricanes, extreme weather events can disrupt even the best-laid travel plans. USA travel insurance with natural disaster cover is a smart choice.

What does JustCover’s USA travel insurance cover?

With JustCover’s single trip Insurance you’re protected against unforeseen events that might pop up while you’re away on holiday. This could include anything from emergency medical costs to a stolen bag.

We provide single trip insurance, that even covers existing health conditions, and your one-off trip can last up to 365 days.

What's covered

Emergency medical expenses & repatriation. Covers tests, treatments and medications if you fall ill or get injured abroad. Includes repatriation to bring you safely back to Ireland.

Cancellation protection. If something unexpected forces you to cancel your trip before you set off, we’ll cover your flight and accommodation costs.

Curtailment cover. If you need to cut your trip short and return home early due to an emergency, we’ll help with the costs.

Travel delay compensation. If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the inconvenience.

Personal belongings protection. Covers lost, stolen or damaged baggage and valuables.

Personal liability cover. If you accidentally injure someone or damage property while travelling, we’ll cover legal expenses and liability costs.

What's not covered

Claims below the policy excess. Minimum claim amounts apply.

Trips outside your chosen region. Tell us where you’re heading to make sure your destinations are covered.

Pre-existing known circumstances. Issues you were aware of before booking may not be covered.

Undeclared medical conditions. Tell us all of your pre-existing conditions to make sure you’re fully protected.

Choosing not to travel. We’ll only cover cancellation if the reason falls within our policy terms.

What activities will I be covered for?

Planning to hike the National Parks or paddleboard in the Florida Keys? With our USA travel insurance, your adventure is in safe hands. Our policies include over 100 low-risk sports and activities as standard. You can explore the great American outdoors at no extra cost.

Craving something a little more high-octane? Activities like skydiving, American football or snowboarding in Colorado aren’t covered as standard. Our winter sports and hazardous activity add-ons make sure your policy keeps up with your plans.

Read our Policy Wording booklet for the full list of the sports and activities we cover. Can’t find yours listed anywhere? Give us a call.

How much does USA travel insurance cost?

When you’re off to America, travel insurance is one thing you don’t want to skimp on. But there’s no set price for all. That’s because different factors can affect the price you’ll pay:

  • Trip cost. Splashing out? The more you’re spending on flights, accommodation and activities, the more your insurance will cost. That’s because there’s more to protect if things go wrong.
  • Your age. Our USA holiday insurance policies have no upper age limits. But older travellers might pay more, due to the higher risk of medical claims.
  • Trip length. A two-week adventure will cost more to insure than a long weekend.
  • Your medical history. Healthcare in the USA is notoriously expensive. If you have a pre-existing condition, your USA travel insurance may cost more.
  • The level of cover you want. Want to play golf, go skiing or take something valuable? You may need to add extra cover.
  • Your travel plans. If you’re only heading to the States once, a single-trip policy is usually cheaper. Frequent flyer? Annual multi-trip cover might offer better value.

Do I need a visa to travel to the USA from Ireland?

It depends on the purpose and length of your stay. For short visits under 90 days, like holidays or business trips, most Irish citizens don’t need a traditional visa. But if you're planning to work, study, or stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for the appropriate US visa.

These visas involve a more detailed application process, including forms, fees, and an interview at the US Embassy in Dublin. So if your trip goes beyond sightseeing or short-term travel, it’s best to start planning early.

Do Irish citizens need an ESTA to visit the USA?

Yes, Irish citizens do need an ESTA to visit the USA under the Visa Waiver Program. The electronic system for travel authorisation lets you enter the US for tourism, business or transit. You can stay for up to 90 days without needing a traditional visa.

You must apply for your ESTA before travelling, ideally at least 72 hours before your flight. It’s a quick online process. But without it, you may be denied boarding at the airport.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the States, make sure your passport is valid and your ESTA is approved. Then you’re good to go.

Will the EHIC cover me for my trip to the USA?

No, your EHIC won’t cover you in the USA. The European Health Insurance Card only gives access to public healthcare in EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. The United States isn’t included. You’ll need worldwide travel insurance with USA cover to avoid paying medical bills out of your own pocket.

And those bills can be steep. Serious emergencies like a heart attack can easily top $100,000. That’s a real concern, especially when around 6,000 Irish people are hospitalised with heart attacks each year. Without the right cover, a health scare abroad could quickly become a financial crisis.

Even if you’re in great shape, travel insurance to America is still a must. It can also protect you against trip cancellations and lost luggage. It can even cover pre-existing medical conditions, as long as they’re declared.

When to buy USA holiday insurance

A trip to the States can be a big investment. The best travel insurance to the USA doesn’t just cover you while you're away. It can also step in before you even take off. Whether you’re booking a one-off trip or ticking off multiple US getaways, the best time to book your insurance is the day you book your trip. That way, you’re covered for cancellations or changes before you even pack your bags.

What to do before travelling to the USA

Before heading off to the United States, there are a few essentials you’ll need to tick off your to-do list. From paperwork to prescriptions, here's what to know before you go:

  • Buy your USA travel insurance. Healthcare in the USA is among the most expensive in the world. Buying USA travel insurance before you go covers medical emergencies. But it also covers cancellations, lost baggage and more.
  • Apply for your ESTA. Irish citizens travelling under the Visa Waiver Program must apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before departure. If you're planning to work, study or stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need the appropriate visa.
  • Check travel warnings. The Department of Foreign Affairs provides up-to-date safety advice for Irish citizens heading to the USA. It’s a good idea to review their guidance before you go.
  • Prescription medicines. Some medications that are legal in Ireland may be restricted in the USA. Carry prescriptions in their original packaging and bring a doctor’s letter if needed. Check with the US Embassy in Dublin for specific guidance.

USA travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

A pre-existing medical condition shouldn’t stop you from chasing your American dream. Our USA travel insurance includes over 1,300 medical conditions. From chronic illnesses, like COPD, to everyday issues, like asthma, all you need to do is declare them during your quote.

Even if you’re feeling well, it’s important to declare any conditions you’ve been diagnosed with, treated for, or prescribed medication for. Many people don’t realise that even well-managed conditions can still count as pre-existing. If they’re not declared, they could affect your cover.

We specialise in helping Irish travellers with pre-existing conditions get the protection they need. Common conditions we cover include:

  • Asthma
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Cancer
  • COPD
  • Diabetes
  • Disability
  • Heart conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke

Understanding healthcare in the USA

If you're used to Ireland’s public healthcare system, the American model can come as a shock. Healthcare in the USA is largely privatised. Even a short hospital stay can result in bills running into tens of thousands of dollars.

There’s no equivalent to Ireland’s HSE or the EHIC scheme. Irish citizens are not entitled to free or subsidised care in the US, even in emergencies.

That’s why USA travel insurance is essential. It can cover the cost of emergency medical treatment, hospital stays and ambulance services. It can even cover repatriation to Ireland if needed. Without it, you’ll be expected to pay out of pocket – and the costs can be financially devastating.

In a medical emergency, dial 911 for immediate assistance. Once you’re safe, contact our 24/7 emergency helpline as soon as possible. We can help coordinate your care and manage the paperwork and costs involved.

Always carry your travel insurance documents with you. That way, if something unexpected happens, you’ll have everything you need to avoid delays in treatment.

USA travel insurance tips and recommendations

Planning a trip to the States? From iconic cities to blissful beaches, the possibilities are endless – and so are the practical details. Rules and regulations can differ dramatically from what Irish travellers are used to. The right USA travel insurance – and a few insider tips – can make all the difference.

Buy your travel insurance early

Purchase your policy as soon as you book your trip to activate cancellation cover³. Declare all medical conditions. Even common ones like asthma or high blood pressure must be declared to ensure your policy is valid. Planning any activities? Make sure your policy includes these or add them on.

Stay alert

Avoid displaying valuables, be cautious at ATMs and use hotel safes when available. Tourist areas are generally safe. But petty crime like pickpocketing and car break-ins do happen, especially in big cities.

Drive safely

Unlike Ireland, Americans drive on the right-hand side of the road. You’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your Irish licence. Speed limits, mobile phone use, and even turning rules differ by state. For example, turning right on red is allowed in most states, but not all. Hiring a car? Make sure you inspect it before you set off.

Remember to tip

Tipping is expected in most service industries. Carry small bills. It makes tipping easier and avoids awkward moments. In restaurants, you’ll be expected to tip 18 to 20% of the pre-tax bill. In taxis, it’s 10 to 15% and for hotel staff, it’s $1 to $5, depending on the service.

Know the laws

Each state has its own laws: What’s legal in California might not be in Texas. Alcohol laws vary: The legal drinking age is 21 nationwide, but rules around where and when you can buy alcohol differ.

Understand the travel risks in the USA

The vast majority of visits to the US are trouble-free. Being informed and prepared helps ensure your trip stays that way. Here are some of things you should consider when travelling to the USA:

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for the USA

When should your USA travel insurance policy start?

The best time to start your USA travel insurance policy is the day you book your trip, not the day you depart. That way, you’re immediately protected if you need to cancel due to illness or injury before take-off.

For single-trip policies, your cover begins on the start date you select. Choose the date you book to activate cancellation benefits straight away. For annual multi-trip policies, cover starts from your chosen policy start date and runs for 12 months. Cancellation cover only applies from that start date onward. Either way, make sure your policy is in place before you leave Ireland. You can’t buy or activate cover once you’ve departed.

Can I travel to the USA from Ireland without an ESTA?

No, you can’t travel to the USA from Ireland without an ESTA, unless you have a valid US visa.

Irish citizens are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. It allows travel to the United States for up to 90 days for tourism, business or transit without a visa. But to use this programme, you must apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) in advance. It’s a quick online application, but it must be approved at least 72 hours before departure.

If you don’t have an ESTA or a visa, it’s likely you’ll be denied boarding at the airport. So make sure your passport is valid and your ESTA is approved before you fly. You can find more details on the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice page.

What happens if my ESTA is declined?

If your ESTA application is declined, you won’t be able to travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Program. But it doesn’t necessarily mean your travel plans are over.

If your ESTA is denied, you can apply for a non-immigrant visa through the US Embassy. This involves completing a DS-160 visa application. You’ll need to pay a fee and attend an in-person interview at the embassy in Dublin. The process can take several weeks, so it’s important to apply as early as possible if your ESTA is refused.

Common reasons for ESTA denial include:

  • Previous visa overstays or immigration issues
  • Criminal convictions
  • Incorrect or inconsistent information on your application
  • Answering “yes” to any of the ESTA security questions, even by mistake

Unfortunately, once an ESTA is denied, reapplying with the same information won’t change the outcome unless your circumstances have changed. If you believe the denial was in error, you can contact US Customs and Border Protection for clarification. But a visa application is usually the next step.

Is travel insurance to the USA expensive?

Travel insurance to the USA can be more expensive than cover for other destinations. The United States has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world. USA travel insurance includes higher levels of medical cover as standard. This can increase the price you’ll pay.

But with JustCover, you can tailor your policy to your needs and budget. Just give us a call or request a quote online. We’ll help you find the right policy, without paying for extras you don’t need.

Is travelling to the USA safe?

Yes, travelling to the USA is generally considered safe for Irish citizens. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs currently advises normal precautions for visits to the United States.

Most trips are trouble-free, but it’s important to stay alert. Especially in large cities, where petty crime like pickpocketing or car break-ins can occur.

Travellers should also be aware of the higher rates of gun ownership. There’s also the potential for extreme weather events. Staying informed, following local laws and having comprehensive USA travel insurance will help ensure a smooth and secure trip.

Can you get travel insurance for the USA if you have a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you can. And with JustCover Ireland, it’s easier than you think. We cover over 1,300 medical conditions, from chronic illnesses like heart conditions to everyday issues like asthma.

It’s essential to declare all your conditions, even if they’re under control. Common conditions like high blood pressure may seem minor. But if they’re not declared and you need treatment in the USA, your claim could be denied. And with America’s high healthcare costs, that’s a risk not worth taking.

I'm planning to go skiing in the USA, do I need additional cover?

Yes. If you're heading to the slopes, you'll need to add our winter sports option to your USA travel insurance. It protects you for everything from snowboarding in California’s Lake Tahoe to skiing down Colorado’s legendary Aspen Highlands. And with cover for lost ski passes and even hired equipment, you can relax and enjoy the powder.
