Can you get travel insurance if you have a disability?
Yes, with JustCover, you absolutely can get travel insurance if you have a disability. We want as many people as possible to enjoy a holiday. That includes the 1.1 million people in Ireland living with a disability.
We know that no two people are the same. That’s why our travel insurance for disabled adults is designed to be flexible. We cover over 1,300 medical conditions, including multiple or complex diagnoses. So whether you’re planning a city break or a beach escape, we’ll help you find the cover you need.
Why do you need disability travel insurance?
Travel should be exciting, not stressful. But if you’re living with a disability, going abroad can come with a few extra challenges. That’s where disability holiday insurance comes in. It’s here to protect you if things don’t go to plan. Here’s what makes it so important:
- Covers for medical emergencies. Falling ill or getting injured abroad can come with a hefty price tag. The ABI found that a traveller in the Canary Islands ended up with a medical bill of €67,000. Our holiday insurance for disabled people covers medical emergencies. That includes emergencies related to your disability.
- Covers your mobility aids. 49% of disabled holidaymakers say they worry about their wheelchair being lost or damaged in transit. At JustCover, we’ll cover wheelchairs, motorised wheelchairs, walking frames and more. We’ll also cover hearing aids and medication.
- Covers cancellation. Booking accessible accommodation and tailored tours often takes extra planning – and expense. If illness or unforeseen circumstances mean you need to cancel, our travel insurance for disabled people can help you recover pre-paid costs, so your investment isn’t lost.
What types of disabilities are covered?
We believe travel should be for everyone. It’s why our disability travel insurance is designed to support a wide range of needs. Examples of the disabilities we’ll cover include, but aren’t limited to:
- Physical disabilities, for example, reduced mobility, limb difference, muscular dystrophy or paralysis.
- Sensory disabilities, such as vision or hearing loss.
- Intellectual disabilities, like Down syndrome or other conditions affecting cognitive function.
- Learning disabilities, which may include dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia.
- Mental health disabilities, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or PTSD.
- Developmental disabilities, like autism spectrum disorder or ADHD.
- Invisible (hidden) disabilities, for example, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia or epilepsy.
- Chronic illnesses or conditions, including diabetes, Crohn’s disease and COPD.
What does travel insurance for disabled people cover?
Mobility equipment
Many disabled holidaymakers have concerns about airlines mishandling mobility equipment – with good reason. According to US data, there’s an industry-wide mishandling rate of 1.4%. That means roughly 1 in every 71 mobility aids gets delayed, damaged or destroyed in transit.
Luckily, our disability travel insurance will cover your equipment whilst you’re abroad. This includes wheelchairs, motorised wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, walking frames, walking sticks and crutches.
Replacement carers
Bringing a carer along? Our group cover makes sure both of you are protected. If your carer has to cancel or cut their trip short due to an unforeseen event, you won’t be left footing the bill. And if you’d like to continue your journey, we’ll contribute up to €1,000 towards extra accommodation and transport costs to help you bring in a replacement carer.
Loss of medication
A lost or stolen bag is a common travel mishap. But it can be a serious problem if it contains essential medication. In the USA, drugs cost 278 per cent more than they do in other countries. Our disability travel insurance covers medication, so you’re not left counting the cost.

Do you have to declare a disability for travel insurance purposes?
Yes, it’s important to declare your disability when buying your travel insurance. It isn’t a hurdle. It’s how you make sure your cover keeps up with your plans, wherever they take you.
Being upfront means your policy can be tailored to your needs. It protects you financially if your condition affects your trip, whether that’s needing to cancel or seeking emergency treatment abroad.
We’ll ask about any pre-existing medical conditions, including disabilities or chronic illnesses. And if your condition changes after you’ve bought your policy? Just let us know. That way, you won’t be left facing unexpected costs if something doesn’t go to plan.
How to get travel insurance if you have a disability
Getting travel insurance when you have a disability is simple and fuss-free with JustCover. When you get your quote, we’ll ask a few questions about your disability and any other health conditions. It’s not about judging your health. It’s about finding the policy that works for you.

What to expect in the medical questionnaire
The medical screening is easy to complete and can be done online. It’s designed to get a clear picture of your health and travel needs. We’ll ask you:
- What type of disability do you have?
- Do you need a carer?
- Will you be using mobility aids or medical equipment while travelling?
- Are you currently taking any medication?
- Have you had surgery or been in hospital in the past year?
- Has your health changed recently in ways related to your disability?
- Are you waiting on any tests, treatments or diagnoses?
- Is there a chance your condition could worsen while you’re away?
If any of the questions don’t quite fit your situation, don’t worry! You can also talk to us directly.
How much does travel insurance for disabled people cost?
There’s no one-size-fits-all price tag when it comes to holiday insurance for disabled people. The cost depends on your individual circumstances and the type of cover you choose. Here’s what can influence your premium:
- Your disability. The nature and severity of your disability can affect the price you’ll pay for travel insurance. We take into account how your disability affects your day-to-day life. We also consider whether you use mobility aids or any ongoing treatment you might need.
- Other health conditions. If you have additional pre-existing medical conditions, these will be factored in too. Especially if they increase the likelihood of needing medical support while abroad.
- Your age. Travel insurance tends to become more expensive as you get older. Why? Because the risk of needing medical care increases.
- The type of holiday you’re taking. Longer trips, adventurous activities or destinations with higher healthcare costs (like the USA) can cost more.
- Level of cover. More comprehensive policies naturally cost more, but they also offer greater protection.
- Optional extras. You might want to add cover for valuable items, like an expensive wheelchair or hearing aids.
- Travel companions. If you're travelling with a carer, insuring both of you on the same group policy has lots of benefits. But it might affect the price.

Will an EHIC cover you abroad if you have a disability?
Yes, it will. If you're an Irish national, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can help you access public healthcare in other European countries and Switzerland. That includes treatment related to your disability, as long as it's medically necessary during your trip.
However, the EHIC has its limitations. It won’t cover private healthcare, lost or stolen mobility aids or trip cancellations. If your carer falls ill, EHIC won’t pay for a replacement. And if you need to be flown home in a medical emergency, your EHIC won’t help. Without travel insurance, a medical evacuation from Europe to Ireland could cost €10,000 or more, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
For all of these things, you’ll need travel insurance. It’s the only way to make sure you’re properly protected when the unexpected happens abroad.

Travelling with a disability takes a little extra planning. But with the right support in place, your trip can be smooth, enjoyable and stress-free. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:
- Buy your travel insurance early. That way, you’re protected if an emergency forces your plans to change before you’ve even packed your case. Make sure your policy covers your disability and any other pre-existing conditions.
- Plan your assistance in advance. Need help at the airport, on the plane, or at your destination? Let your airline and accommodation know ahead of time.
- Pack smart. Bring any medication, mobility aids, and medical documents you might need. Keep them in your hand luggage just in case.
- Know your rights. EU regulations require airlines and airports to provide free assistance to disabled passengers. Don’t hesitate to ask for what you need.
- Research accessibility. Check hotel facilities before you go. Some destinations vary widely in accessibility.
- Bring backup. If you rely on equipment, consider packing spares. Or research where to get replacements locally.
- Stay connected. Keep emergency contacts and travel insurance details handy. And make sure someone at home knows your itinerary.
Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for disabled people
Does travel insurance cover a carer or travel partner?
Our disability travel insurance focuses on protecting you. It doesn’t automatically extend to your travel partner or carer. But there is a simple solution.
Group travel insurance is designed with shared journeys in mind. It means that if your trip needs to be cancelled due to your disability, both you and your carer are covered. No extra forms, no separate claims. Just one streamlined policy that looks after you both.
And if your carer has to cancel or cut their trip short? Group travel insurance means you won’t be left stranded. We’ll contribute up to €1,000 towards extra accommodation and transport costs. It can help you bring in a replacement carer, so your journey can continue.
Can you get cover if you’re on the waiting list for treatments?
Planning a holiday while managing your disability isn’t always easy, especially if you’re waiting for treatment. If there’s a chance your trip could be cancelled or cut short because of it, we’re not able to offer cover. That’s because the risk is considered foreseeable. Travel insurance is designed to protect against unexpected events.
Do you need to declare autism on your travel insurance?
Whether you need to declare autism depends on your medical history. According to our Policy Wording, you’ll need to declare autism if, in the last two years, you’ve:
- Taken any prescribed medication for it
- Received medical treatment or advice at a hospital, clinic, GP surgery, or via remote consultation
But if you’re unsure, it’s always best to check. Declaring a condition ensures your policy protects you properly if something unexpected happens.
Is there an age limit on disability travel insurance?
Not with JustCover. We believe that travel should be for everyone, no matter your age and no matter your needs. That’s why our disability travel insurance has no upper age limit. Whether you’re 35 or 85, our policies are designed to support disabled holidaymakers of all ages.
Planning a winter getaway? Our winter sports cover does have an age limit of 65. But for everything else, from city breaks to beach holidays, we’re ready when you are.
Are you covered if your wheelchair or scooter gets damaged?
In Ireland, over 295,000 people report difficulty with basic physical activities. Many rely on wheelchairs, walking aids or mobility scooters to get around. For these holidaymakers, heading abroad can be as stressful as it is exciting.
A UK study found that 40% of disabled holidaymakers had their mobility aids damaged or lost by airlines. And nearly half said they worry about their wheelchair every time they travel.
That’s why our travel insurance for wheelchair users includes cover for your mobility aids while you’re abroad. Whether it’s a wheelchair, walking frame, stick or specialist equipment, we’ll help protect it against loss, theft, or accidental damage.
Bringing something particularly valuable? You can add gadgets cover to protect single items, giving you extra reassurance if you’re travelling with high-spec mobility equipment.
Do you need to provide medical evidence for your disability when buying travel insurance?
No, we don’t ask for medical certificates or formal documentation when you buy a policy. However, you do need to declare your disability and any pre-existing medical conditions honestly and accurately in our medical screening. This helps make sure your cover is valid and tailored to your needs.
We may ask follow-up questions. Things like whether your condition is stable, if you’ve had recent hospital treatment, or if you're awaiting surgery. But you typically won’t need to submit paperwork or a doctor’s note when buying a policy..
Can travel insurance cover lost or stolen mobility aids when abroad?
Yes, it can – and it can make all the difference if your mobility aid goes missing while you're travelling. To help things go smoothly when you make a claim, you’ll need to:
- Report the loss or theft to the local police within 24 hours. Be sure to ask for a copy of the police report. We’ll need it to process your claim.
- Take reasonable steps to recover your mobility aid. That might include checking with lost property, notifying your hotel, or speaking to airport staff.
What is considered a pre-existing condition for disability travel insurance?
At JustCover, a pre-existing condition is defined as any disease, illness, disability or injury for which, in the last two years, you have:
- Taken prescribed medication or received medical treatment
- Consulted a medical practitioner, or
- Been registered as an inpatient or outpatient at a hospital, clinic, or GP surgery
Declaring your conditions matters, but we won’t make you jump through hoops. Our online screening is quick and straightforward. And once you’ve declared them, you can relax, knowing your adventure is properly covered.
How far in advance do you need to arrange disability travel insurance?
It’s best to arrange your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your trip. That way, you’re covered for cancellation if something unexpected crops up. This could include needing to cancel due to illness or changes in your condition. If your health changes after you’ve booked your insurance, just let us know.
