Do you need travel insurance for Morocco?

Yes, you do. Morocco is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination. But even well-planned holidays can hit a bump in the road.

The Department of Foreign Affairs gives Morocco a ‘High Degree of Caution’ rating. This means travellers face slightly higher risks than they would at home. Things like petty crime, limited emergency healthcare or unexpected travel disruptions.

The DFA strongly recommends that Irish holidaymakers take out holiday insurance for their trips to Morocco. That’s because:

  • Emergency healthcare can be costly. Private healthcare in Morocco is good, especially in cities like Marrakech and Casablanca. But Irish holidaymakers aren’t eligible for free treatment, and hospitals may ask for upfront payment. That’s where our Morocco travel insurance comes in. It covers emergency medical costs, so you’re protected when it matters most.
  • It can help you get home in an emergency. No one likes to think of the worst happening on holiday. But without insurance, medical repatriation from Morocco to Ireland can cost €20,000 or more.
  • Petty crime is common. Heading to Marrakech? Violent crime is rare. But pickpocketing and phone-snatching can be a day-to-day occurrence in busy areas. With the Morocco travel insurance from JustCover, a stolen bag won’t derail your holiday plans.

What does JustCover’s Morocco trip insurance cover?

Known events or circumstances – Claims won’t be covered for issues you were already aware of when you bought your insurance.

Medical conditions you don’t declare – You’ll need to let us know about any pre-existing conditions to ensure you're properly covered.

Although Morocco is geographically in North Africa, it’s classed as part of Europe for travel insurance purposes. Our European cover includes all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. And yes, that includes Morocco.

How much does Morocco travel insurance cost?

The price you’ll pay for Morocco holiday insurance varies from person to person. Why? Because it depends on both your personal circumstances and your travel plans. Here’s what can affect the cost:

  • Trip duration: Longer holidays usually cost more to insure, as there’s more time for things to go wrong.
  • Age of holidaymakers: The cost of travel insurance generally increases with age. But with the tailored cover for older holidaymakers at JustCover, you won’t pay more than you need to.
  • Medical history: If you have pre-existing conditions, your premium may be a little higher. But it’s important to declare them when you take out your policy. That way, you’ll be fully covered if you need emergency medical treatment related to your condition while you’re away.
  • Type of policy: A single-trip policy is perfect for a one-off Moroccan adventure. But if you’ve got more travel planned this year, an annual multi-trip policy could offer better value.
  • Planned activities: Thinking of camel trekking, quad biking, or hiking in the High Atlas? Make sure your policy includes cover for all your activities.

Morocco travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

Travelling to Morocco with a pre-existing medical condition? We’ve got you covered. As specialists in medical travel insurance, we understand that emergency treatment in Morocco can be expensive. Private clinics are often the recommended choice for tourists. Without proper cover, even a minor issue could lead to a major bill.

At JustCover, we offer travel health insurance that can cover over 1,300 pre-existing conditions, including:

It’s important to declare all pre-existing medical conditions when you take out your policy. Otherwise, you might not be covered if you need to make a claim related to your condition while you’re away.

Understanding healthcare in Morocco

Morocco is a stunning destination. But like any trip abroad, it’s important to understand how its healthcare system works before you go.

Morocco isn’t covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This means you won’t be entitled to free or subsidised medical care. If you need emergency treatment, you’ll probably need to pay up front.

Public hospitals in Morocco may struggle to provide adequate care, especially outside major cities. Private clinics are the recommended option for tourists – and they can be pricey!

That’s why comprehensive travel insurance is essential. It protects you from unexpected costs and gives you access to private healthcare in an emergency.

Are vaccinations needed for a holiday in Morocco?

For most Irish holidaymakers, no special vaccinations are required to enter Morocco. But it’s still a good idea to check your routine immunisations are up to date. You could also consider a few additional jabs depending on your health, travel plans and how long you’ll be staying.

The current vaccine recommendations for Morocco are:

  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and polio – Make sure your routine boosters are up-to-date.
  • Hepatitis A – Recommended for most holidaymakers, especially if you’ll be eating street food or staying in rural areas.
  • Typhoid –Consider this if you’re travelling off the beaten path.
  • Rabies – Only advised if you’ll be in contact with animals.
  • Hepatitis B – May be recommended for individuals at higher risk.

Will the EHIC cover you for your trip to Morocco?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a fantastic resource for Irish holidaymakers heading to EU or EEA countries. But it doesn’t provide any medical cover in Morocco.

That means if you need emergency treatment in Morocco, you’ll be expected to pay upfront. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirms that medical care in Morocco can be expensive. It states that private healthcare is often the best option for visitors.

That’s why finding the best travel insurance for Morocco is essential. Here’s what our Morocco travel insurance policies can do for you:

  • Cover emergency medical treatment and hospital stays in Morocco.
  • Provide access to a 24/7 medical helpline.
  • Cover repatriation costs if you need to return home to Ireland for treatment.
  • Protect against trip cancellations, lost luggage and more.

What our customers say

Repeat Customer

“For the last couple of years, I have bought annual travel insurance for my wife and I from JustCover. I am a repeat customer because it is really easy to buy online. It’s also very good value, and they do not penalise me because of my senior status. I opt only for basic cover for all our trips to Europe over the year. I like the good customer service and timely reminders.”

Do you need a visa to travel to Morocco from Ireland?

Good news! Irish passport holders don’t need a visa for short stays in Morocco, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs. You can enter the country visa-free for up to 90 days.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry.
  • You may be asked to show proof of onward travel or accommodation on arrival.
  • Plan to stay longer than 90 days? You’ll need to apply for an extension or a visa through the Moroccan authorities.

Even without a visa requirement, it’s still essential to have comprehensive travel insurance. Morocco isn’t covered by the EHIC scheme

Travel insurance helps cover emergency medical costs, along with protection for trip cancellations, lost luggage and more.

Morocco travel tips and recommendations

With the right cover and a few smart choices, your Moroccan adventure can be as smooth as it is unforgettable.

Healthcare:

  • Travel insurance is essential. The EHIC scheme in Morocco doesn’t cover Irish holidaymakers and medical care can be expensive. The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical cover and repatriation.
  • Upfront payment is common. Even in emergencies, hospitals may require payment before treatment. A policy with JustCover includes access to a 24/7 medical helpline. You won’t be left to navigate this alone.
  • Declare pre-existing conditions. Ongoing health concern? Declaring them when taking out your policy ensures you’re fully protected.

Safety while travelling:

  • Petty theft can happen. Pickpocketing and phone-snatching are common in busy areas. Keep valuables secure and stay alert in crowded places.
  • Respect local customs. Modest dress is encouraged, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should avoid sleeveless tops.
  • Stay informed. The DFA advises a ‘High Degree of Caution’ for Morocco. Check their official travel advice before you go for updates on safety.

Transport:

  • Taxis are common, but not always metered. Agree on a fare before you set off, or ask your hotel to book a trusted driver.
  • Trains and buses are reliable. Morocco’s rail network connects major cities like Casablanca, Rabat and Fes. Bus companies are reliable for longer journeys.
  • Be cautious while driving. Road conditions vary. Driving styles can be unpredictable. If hiring a car, check your insurance includes cover for Morocco.

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for Morocco

How safe is it to travel in Morocco?

Morocco is a popular destination for Irish holidaymakers. But like any international trip, it’s important to take sensible precautions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) currently advises Irish citizens to exercise a ‘High Degree of Caution’. This means that while travel to Morocco is possible and common, there may be more risks than you’d typically encounter at home.

It recommends staying alert, avoiding large public gatherings and keeping an eye on official updates during your stay.

At what point should you book your Morocco travel insurance?

It’s best to book your travel insurance for Morocco as soon as you’ve booked your trip. That way, you’re protected from the moment your holiday plans are confirmed.

Unexpected events like illness, jury service or redundancy could disrupt your plans before you travel. By buying insurance early, you’ll be covered if you need to cancel your trip.

So once your flights are booked and your itinerary’s taking shape, securing your travel insurance should be next on the list. It’s a small step that can make a big difference.

How to avoid getting sick in Morocco

Morocco is a feast for the senses. But it’s also a place where unfamiliar food and hygiene standards can catch travellers off guard. The good news? With a few simple precautions, you can stay healthy and enjoy every moment of your trip.

Here are some practical tips to help avoid getting sick while in Morocco:

  • Pack a basic travel health kit. Anti-diarrhoeal medication, oral rehydration salts, paracetamol and motion sickness tablets could come in handy.
  • Check your vaccinations. Make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date. Have any boosters, if required.
  • Be cautious with food and water. Stick to bottled water with an unbroken seal.
  • Avoid ice in drinks unless you’re sure it’s made from purified water.
  • Eat freshly cooked food. Be cautious with raw salads, fruit or street snacks.
  • Wash your hands regularly or carry hand sanitiser.
  • Protect against bites. Mosquitoes aren’t a major issue in most areas. But it’s still wise to use repellent and wear long sleeves in the evenings.

Is travel insurance mandatory for a trip to Morocco?

Travel insurance isn’t a mandatory requirement for Irish nationals visiting Morocco. But it’s strongly recommended – for good reason. Unlike trips within the EU, your EHIC won’t cover you in Morocco. If you need medical care, you’ll likely have to pay upfront, even in emergencies.

The Department of Foreign Affairs advises Irish holidaymakers to get comprehensive travel insurance. It should include cover for medical expenses, repatriation and legal costs – like ours does at JustCover.

How should you handle a medical emergency while in Morocco?

The most important thing is to stay calm and get to safety. Seek help from hotel staff or your tour guide, then head to a medical facility. Private clinics are generally recommended for tourists. They tend to offer quicker, more reliable care.

Once you're safe, contact our 24-hour emergency assistance team as soon as possible. They’ll support you every step of the way. They can arrange treatment and guide you through what’s covered under your policy.

Our emergency assistance number is +353 1 263 6895. It’s a good idea to save this number to your phone before you travel.

Can travellers with pre-existing health conditions get Morocco travel insurance?

You can at JustCover. We believe your health shouldn’t hold you back from experiencing Morocco’s magic. It’s why we cover over 1,300 medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, asthma and cancer. We can even offer tailored cover for senior holidaymakers and those with long-term conditions.

Declaring your condition is essential if you want to make sure you’re fully protected. But we’ve made that process as smooth and straightforward as possible. Just fill out a quick health questionnaire when you get your quote.

Does Morocco travel insurance come with age restrictions?

No, our Morocco travel insurance doesn’t come with age restrictions. Everyone deserves to enjoy their holiday, whether you’re 25 or over 85. Our policies are designed to support holidaymakers of all ages. With us, you can explore Morocco, without worrying about your date of birth.

Planning to ski in the High Atlas Mountains? The only age restriction applies to our winter sports cover. That’s only available to people aged 65 years and under at the date of issue.

Can you drink the tap water in Morocco?

Tap water in Morocco is treated and generally safe for locals to drink. But tourists are advised to avoid drinking tap water directly. The change in water composition can upset your system, even in major cities like Marrakech or Casablanca.

The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends sticking to bottled water and avoiding ice cubes during your stay.

Here are a few simple tips to help you stay healthy:

  • Choose sealed bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
  • Be cautious with ice cubes. They may be made from tap water.
  • Avoid raw salads or fruits that may have been rinsed in tap water.
  • Many hotels offer filtered water stations. Look for signs marked ‘eau potable’.
