What are the benefits of travel insurance for over 70s?

Travel insurance for over 70s is there if something goes wrong on your holiday. It means you won’t face high costs if the worst happens while you’re away:

  • You’re more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition as you get older. The Pfizer Health and Science Index in Ireland found that “83% of over 65-year-olds are living with at least one medical condition, while almost one in three are living with either Heart disease, COPD or Diabetes.” As a specialist provider, we can cover more than 1,300 medical conditions.
  • Even if you’re healthy and active, you could still have an accident. The HSE says that “One third of older adults deemed at low risk of a fall experience a fall within 12 months”. It reports that falls are “the leading cause of trauma in Ireland”. Emergency medical care abroad can easily cost thousands of Euros.
  • Get travel insurance for over 70s and you’ll be covered for emergency costs. The Department of Foreign Affairs says: “Buying comprehensive travel insurance can save you and your family a lot of money if something goes wrong. It will also help you get the medical attention you need when you need it. Hospital bills can quickly run into thousands of euros, and a medical evacuation back to Ireland can cost thousands more”.

We’ll keep things easy. No jargon, no waffle. Get travel insurance with no upper age limit from a specialist medical provider today.

Going away for medical treatment or against medical advice – We cannot offer cover if you’re going away for planned medical treatment, or if you have been advised by your doctor not to travel.

Problems you knew might come up – If you knew you might make a claim before you booked your trip or bought your policy.

Claims below the excess – If your claim is less than the excess on your policy. You won’t be able to claim.

Over 70s travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

One of the 83% of Irish seniors with a pre-existing condition? Getting travel insurance for over 70s is even more important. However, this can be tricky. Many standard providers will have an age limit or won’t cover pre-existing conditions.

Travel knowing you’re covered by a specialist medical provider. At JustCover, we’ll consider over 1,300 conditions, even if you’re living with multiple conditions. Simply tell us about them in our medical questionnaire.

We’ll consider medical travel insurance for over 70s for:

  • Heart conditions
  • COPD
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Stroke
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Disabilities
  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy

Why is it so important to declare pre-existing conditions?

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing medical conditions when you buy your policy, any claim you make could be refused, even if it’s not directly linked to your condition. This means you’re not protected by travel insurance for over 70s.

Declaring all your conditions upfront is the only way to make sure you’re properly covered. It means we can give you a policy that includes the right protection for your health and your trip. You can find full details in our Policy Wording.

How much does travel insurance for over 70s cost?

Travel insurance for over 70s will depend on you and your trip. Factors that impact the price include:

  • Your age: Travel insurance does become more expensive as you get older, as you’re more likely to need to claim. So if you’re only just 70, your policy could cost less than someone who is older.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions: Again, these make you more likely to make a claim. So if you have one or more conditions, this will mean a higher quote.
  • Where you’re going: Some places, like the USA, have expensive healthcare systems. Travel insurance for those 70 and over for these countries will be higher, as claims will cost more.
  • How long you’re going for: Finally taking that 4-month trip around Asia? Your quote will reflect how long you’re away for.

Any extra cover you require: If you need cover for gadgets, a golf or cruise holiday, or other activities.

Why is travel insurance more expensive for people over 70?

If you’re over 70, you have a higher chance of needing emergency medical care while you’re on holiday. The British Geriatrics Society found that: “People aged 65 and over account for over 40% of hospital admissions” and “occupy around two-thirds of hospital inpatient beds”. You’re also more likely to have a pre-existing medical condition. These factors will raise the cost of your policy, as you’re more likely to make a claim.

If you’re looking for cheaper travel insurance for over 70s, you could consider taking a shorter trip or visiting somewhere where emergency medical costs are lower. Both of these could bring down your quote. Also, stick to activities already covered as standard, as then you won’t need additional cover.

Tips for travelling when over 70 years old

There are some simple things every traveller over 70 should do to prepare for a trip. From making sure you have enough medication, to checking your passport:

1. Speak to your GP or medical team

Check that you’re fit to travel and whether there are any precautions you should take, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Take a list of your medication, medical history and your doctor’s contact details in case you need them.

2. Make sure you have plenty of medication

Take enough for your trip, plus extra in case you are delayed. It’s smart to take some in your hand luggage and some in your suitcase in case one is lost or stolen. Check whether any countries you’re visiting have restrictions on bringing medication in.

3. Check your vaccinations:

Make sure your standard vaccinations are up to date and research whether you need any extra for your destination. The HSE has advice on what to do.

4. Research your destination

Take time to work out where you would go in an emergency or if you needed help. If you have mobility issues, check that your accommodation is suitable for you and that there are shops and restaurants nearby. You should also speak to your airport and airline about booking any assistance you may need.

5. Check your passport and any visa requirements

Make sure your passport hasn’t expired and has enough time remaining on it. Many countries require you to have at least 6 months left. Check this and any other entry requirements, such as visas, using the Department of Foreign Affairs website

6. Get travel insurance for over 70s

It’s essential for your trip. Get protection for emergency medical expenses, lost or stolen belongings, and travel delays. You should also take your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) if visiting a country that accepts it.

7. Look after yourself while you’re away

Drink plenty of water, take precautions in the sun and get some rest. Even if you love an action-packed trip, it’s important to schedule some breaks.

Yes, there are some limits on how long you can travel depending on the type of policy you choose.

  • Single trip policies are available for trips up to 365 days, depending on your destination.
  • Annual multi-trip policies include multiple trips across the year, but each individual trip is limited to either 31 days or 45 days per trip, depending on the level of cover you choose.

If you’re not sure which is the right option for you, please get in touch with our friendly team. We’ll help you make the right choice.

How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?

This will depend on what your claim is for and whether it’s a medical emergency:

  • If it’s a medical emergency: Contact our 24/7 medical emergency helpline as soon as possible. This must be done before making a claim with us.
  • If it’s not: You can tell us of other claims online within 30 days of your trip ending.

Read our Policy Wording and claims page for full details. Make sure you understand what you need to do and any documents you need to provide as evidence.

What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?

Contact our 24/7 emergency medical helpline as soon as possible. You must do this if you wish to make a claim with us. You should keep all documents you are given and any receipts.

More information on any evidence you’ll need and what to do can be found on our claims page and in our Policy Wording.

Are mobility aids or medical equipment covered by travel insurance?

As long as you declare any pre-existing medical conditions that your medical aids and equipment are for. They will be protected against loss, theft and damage while you’re away. This will be up to the limit on your personal belongings cover. Read our Policy Wording for full details and any exclusions.

When should over 70s buy travel insurance?

You should buy travel insurance for over 70s as soon as possible, up to 12 months before the start of your trip. You’ll be covered for unexpected cancellation for certain reasons from the moment you buy your policy.

If you’re leaving it last minute, you can buy a policy on the day you’re leaving. As long as you haven’t yet gone through customs at the airport in Ireland. See our over 70s travel insurance Policy Wording for more details.

Can you include a carer on your policy?

Yes, you can include a carer with travel insurance for over 70s. You’ll get protection if your carer unexpectedly cancels or has to cut their trip short for certain reasons. They will also be covered if you have a medical emergency and both need to stay on for longer. We offer couples, family and friends policies where you can include your carer. Always read our Policy Wording to understand your cover.

Can you get cover for an existing trip if you forgot to buy insurance before departure?

No, unfortunately, we cannot cover you if you’ve already left Ireland. You can buy a policy on the day of departure, but only if you haven’t yet gone through customs at the airport in Ireland. All trips must also start and end in Ireland.

Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 70?

We aim to make travel insurance for over 70s as easy as possible. We have a simple medical questionnaire that you’ll fill out before getting your quote. In it, you’ll declare any pre-existing conditions and answer some questions. Then you’ll get your quote.

You must be fit to travel and if you need to make a claim, we may contact your doctor to check this is the case. Our Policy Wording has full details.

Can you extend your policy if your trip is longer than expected?

If you haven’t yet left for your trip, you can contact us using the details in your policy documents. We’ll be happy to look at extending your policy for you. However, there will be an additional charge for this.

You can still contact us if you’re still on your trip to ask about extending your policy. This will only be considered if no claims have been made or are pending, and acceptance is less likely once you’ve departed.

If your holiday is extended due to a covered event, such as becoming ill, your policy will automatically extend for up to 30 days. Read our Policy Wording for more details.

Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as insurance?

An EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) can help you access some emergency state medical care in certain countries. However, this is only at the same cost as locals; it isn’t always free. The EHIC won’t cover all costs, such as medical repatriation. It’s recommended that you take both your EHIC and travel insurance for over 70s. This will also provide cover for your belongings or medication being lost or stolen, and more benefits.
