What is travel insurance for over 80s?
As we grow older, certain health issues and travel worries can become more common. Our travel insurance for over 80s is designed to protect you when heading abroad. It offers senior travellers cover for unexpected events, such as emergency medical treatment, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. Plus, it can be tailored to cover pre-existing medical conditions. So you can focus on enjoying your holiday, knowing you’re properly protected from surprise costs.
Why do over 80s need travel insurance?
Travel insurance is important at any age, but even more so when you're over 80. As we get older, accidents become more likely. Whether it’s a fall or a medical flare-up. Over 80s travel insurance helps you avoid expensive costs if something happens on your trip.
- Medical problems become more common as we age. In fact, 83% of over 65-year-olds are living with at least one medical condition. By declaring your conditions, we can cover you for any medical-related mishaps.
- Losing belongings happens all too often. Misplacing items is frustrating, especially when we’re on holiday. We’re not in our usual surroundings, and navigating new spaces and public transport can be distracting. Lost property on public transport alone is worth over €2.5 billion (£2.2 billion). With over 80s cover, we can help compensate for any items that are stolen or lost.
- Support around the clock. With JustCover, you’re only a phone call away from help. You’ll have access to our 24/7 emergency medical helpline. So you can call us day or night with any concerns, and we’ll be happy to help.
Booking over 80s cover is easy with JustCover. Getting a quote is fast and simple, and we can walk you through it if you’d prefer. Speak to one of our team members today.

Lost or stolen belongings – If your bags or valuables go missing or are damaged, you’ll be covered. You can also add gadget cover for things like your phone, tablet, or camera.
Personal liability – If you accidentally hurt someone or damage property while away, we can help cover legal costs.
Legal protection – If you need to claim compensation for something that happened on your trip, we’ll help with certain legal costs.
Travel delays – If your flight is delayed, you may get compensation for the time lost.
Emergency medical expenses – If you get sick or injured while abroad, we’ll cover emergency treatment. This also includes getting you back home if needed.
24/7 emergency medical helpline – You’ll have access to help whenever you need it, wherever you are.
What's not covered
Undeclared medical conditions – If you don’t tell us about existing medical conditions, we won’t be able to cover related claims.
Cancellations that aren’t covered – We can’t cover cancellations for reasons like simply changing your mind.
Uncovered activities or destinations – Always check your policy. Some sports or destinations may need additional cover.
Travelling against medical advice – We don’t cover trips taken for planned medical treatment or if your doctor advises you not to travel.
Known risks before booking – If you already knew about a problem before buying your policy, you likely won’t be covered.
Claims below your excess – If your claim is less than your policy excess, you won’t be able to make a claim.
Over 80s travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
It’s not uncommon to live with a medical condition in your 80s. This can make it difficult to get travel insurance. However, at JustCover, we’re able to cover over 1,300 medical conditions. And, we have no upper age limit.
Here are a few of the common conditions we cover:
- Heart conditions
- COPD
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Stroke
- Asthma
- Disabilities
- Arthritis
- Epilepsy
- Cancer
Why is it so important to declare pre-existing conditions?
Declaring your pre-existing medical conditions means we can make sure your cover reflects your actual health needs. It helps protect you if something unexpected happens on your trip, whether that’s falling ill before you travel or needing medical assistance while you’re away.
If you don’t declare a condition when buying your policy, you may not be able to make a claim related to it. This includes situations where you need emergency treatment abroad, or have to cancel your trip due to a change in your health.
That’s why it’s important to answer your medical questionnaire fully and honestly. It helps us assess your needs accurately and gives you the right level of protection from the start.

How much does travel insurance for over 80s cost?
Travel insurance costs a bit more when you’re over 80, but getting the right level of cover means you'll be properly protected if something unexpected happens on your holiday. Prices will vary depending on your health, destination, and trip details.
Here’s what typically affects the price:
- Your age – Costs usually rise with age, as the risk of needing medical care is higher.
- Pre-existing medical conditions – Declaring conditions can increase the premium, but it’s essential to be covered.
- Destination – Travel to places like the USA, Canada, or Australia can cost more due to higher medical fees.
- Trip length – Longer trips may cost more, especially if they go beyond 30 days.
- Add-ons – Options like cruise cover, winter sports or gadget insurance will increase the price.
Why is travel insurance more expensive for people over 80?
As we age, the chance of needing emergency medical care abroad increases. The Irish longitudinal study on ageing, TILDA, reports that 64.8% of residents over 65 live with co-morbidity (the presence of two or more chronic conditions).
Also, around 15% of adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental illness, including depression, dementia, anxiety, alcohol dependence, and schizophrenia. Not to mention that healthcare for tourists in some countries can be very expensive. The USA, in particular, has some of the most expensive emergency medical care in the world.
This makes insurance claims more likely and more expensive. But, while premiums are higher, they’re also more important than ever.

What our customers say
"Spoke to a very nice man called Josh in Customer Service. I was looking for Travel insurance for my upcoming trip to Australia. Being 80 years old, I was having trouble. Josh was so helpful. He was patient and explained everything simply and clearly. And supplied a choice of three plans with prices and cover. I decided on one and Josh guided me through the payment process. Very impressed with Josh and his efficiency. 5 stars well earned.”
see full reviewTips for travelling when over 80 years old
Travelling in your 80s can be incredibly rewarding and with the right planning, it’s more than doable. Whether you’re heading abroad or staying in Ireland, these senior travel tips will help make your journey easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
- Plan extra time at the airport – Moving around takes longer, and queues can be tiring for senior travellers. Arrive early to avoid stress and give yourself time to rest between stages.
- Book accessible accommodation – Look for lifts, handrails, and walk-in showers if you have mobility needs. Many hotel booking platforms now highlight these features.
- Keep medication in your hand luggage – Bring enough for your full holiday, plus extra for delays. This is especially important for older travellers managing long-term conditions.
- Check the weather forecast – Extreme heat or cold can affect your health. Dress in layers and pack sun protection or thermals depending on the season.
- Travel with medical info – Carry a list of your prescriptions, allergies, and emergency contacts. It helps speed up care if something happens abroad.
- Get the right travel insurance – Choose a policy that includes cover for declared medical conditions, 24/7 medical support, and any planned activities.
Frequently asked questions about over 80s travel insurance
Are there age limits for travel insurance?
No with us! Most insurers do set age limits, but we offer cover specifically designed for travellers in this age group.
Are there limits on the length of the trip for the over 80s?
No, there are no age limits on the length of your trip, even if you’re over 80. But your maximum trip length may vary depending on your age and the type of cover you choose.
Single trips can last up to 365 days, while annual multi-trip policies limit each trip to 31 or 45 days. See your Policy Wording for details.
Should you consult your GP before travelling?
It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before going abroad. Especially if you have a long-term condition or recent health changes. This way, you’ll be able to tell us about any conditions that may interfere with your trip. If you don’t declare these and a medical-related accident happens, you may not be covered.
Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as insurance?
If you’re travelling in the EU, a valid EHIC can give you access to local state healthcare. But it won’t cover private treatment or things like cancellation. So, travel insurance is still essential.
Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 80?
No in-person assessment is needed. You’ll just need to declare any medical conditions online or over the phone when you buy your policy. Be honest and accurate to make sure you’re properly covered.
Are mobility aids or medical equipment covered by travel insurance?
Some travel policies can cover lost, damaged or stolen mobility aids like walking frames or wheelchairs. You’ll need to list these when you buy your policy and check the cover limits.
How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?
Contact us as soon as something happens. You’ll need to provide details of what happened, along with receipts or reports (like medical notes or police reports) to support your claim. You can make a claim via our claims form.
What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?
First, call the emergency number associated with the country, city or place you’re in. Alternatively, you can also call our 24/7 emergency helpline provided in your policy. From here, we can help you find treatment locally and guide you on what to do next. Keep your policy number with you at all times.
When should over 80s buy travel insurance?
As with any insurance, buy it as soon as you book your trip. That way, you’re covered straight away if you need to cancel due to illness or other unexpected issues.
Can you extend your policy if your travel plans change or you need to stay longer?
In most cases, yes. Just so long as your policy hasn’t ended and you haven’t made a claim. Contact us as early as possible to request an extension.
Can you include a carer on your policy?
Yes. If a carer is travelling with you, they can usually be added to the same policy - but it must be a group policy. It’s important they’re listed so their costs are also covered if something happens during the trip.
Can you get cover for an existing trip if you forgot to buy insurance before departure?
It is possible. However, it’s strongly advised against. It’s typically much more expensive and limited. If you can, always buy insurance before you leave Ireland. If you’re already on your trip and need travel insurance, contact us as soon as you can, and we’ll be able to help.
