What is group travel insurance?
Group travel insurance is a single policy that covers up to 10 people travelling together. Whether it’s a holiday with friends, a family getaway or a trip with your five-a-side team, everyone’s protected under one plan.
Do you need group travel insurance?
This policy is a popular choice for groups because it’s easier to manage. It might even save you money. One set of documents. One point of contact. Far less faff if something goes wrong.
The group travel insurance from JustCover:
- Covers cancellations. If someone has an emergency before departure, travel insurance for large groups can help. You can claim back non-refundable costs like flights, hotels or tours. Ideal if you were splashing out on something special!
- Covers medical emergencies. Whether it’s a sprained ankle on a hike or something more serious, JustCover provides up to unlimited medical cover. We consider all pre-existing conditions, so your whole group can travel stress-free. There’s even 24/7 emergency medical assistance, if you need it.
- Covers holiday mishaps. Lost luggage, stolen passports, missed connections. Group travel can come with a few curveballs. JustCover’s policies help protect against these holiday hiccups, so you’re not left footing the bill. Think it won’t happen to you? In 2024, over 100 Irish nationals sought help from the Irish Embassy after a crime overseas.

Benefits of group travel insurance
Whether it’s a beach break, road trip or rugby tour, group travel insurance keeps things simple. You can spend less time organising and more time enjoying your trip.
- One policy, less hassle. There’s less to keep track of, and fewer forms to lose. And with just one point of contact, it’s easy if you need to claim.
- Covers everyone under the same plan. If one of you falls ill, the whole group can cancel. That’s not always the case with individual policies.
- Could save you money. Group travel insurance may be more cost-effective than individual policies. Want to find out if that’s the case for you? Give us a call us or get group travel insurance quotes online.
Does everyone on a group policy always have to travel together?
Not always. It depends on the type of group travel insurance policy you choose.
Some policies, like our single-trip travel insurance, need all travellers to start and end the trip together. Others, like our annual multi-trip travel insurance, offer more flexibility. Be sure to check whether your chosen policy allows individuals to travel separately or if the cover applies only when the whole group travels as one.
Find the best group travel insurance
Planning one big trip together, or a whole year of getaways? Pick the policy that matches your plans, and we can cover your whole group.
Off on a one-off adventure? A single-trip group policy covers everyone named, from booking until touchdown back home.
Annual multi-trip group travel insurance
Going away more than once? Named travellers can take unlimited trips throughout the year – together or solo.
Is a group policy better than individual travel cover?
That depends on your plans, who you’re travelling with and how you like to travel.
Why group travel insurance might work better for you:
- Less paperwork. Bundling everyone together saves time and effort.
- Everyone’s protected. Each traveller gets the same level of cover under one plan.
- It could save you money. Group policies may be cheaper than buying individual cover for each person.
- Easier if plans change. If someone falls ill and you need to cancel, you can make one claim for the whole group.
Why group travel insurance might not be the best fit:
- Pre-existing medical conditions. If one of your group has a pre-existing medical condition, it might be cheaper for them to get separate cover.
- Different travel plans. Single-trip group policies mean you have to travel together.
- Families. Our family travel insurance might be a better fit for you. It covers up to two adults and up to eight children.

How much is group travel insurance?
Several factors influence how much you’ll pay for group travel insurance, including:
- Group size. We can cover up to 10 people. The larger the group, the more you’ll pay – but group travel insurance may be cheaper than individual policies.
- Destination. Trips to countries with high medical costs (like the USA) may cost more.
- Trip duration. The longer you’re away, the greater the chance you’ll need to make a claim.
- Age of travellers. We have no upper age limits on any of our policies. But senior travellers may increase the overall cost of your group travel policy.
- Itinerary. We cover over 100 different sports and activities as standard. But getting our winter sports or hazardous activity add-on will cost more.
- Health. If someone in your group has a pre-existing medical condition, it may raise the cost for everyone.
Group holiday insurance may work out cheaper than individual cover. It also cuts down on admin, which helps keep costs down.
How are package holidays affected?
Group travel insurance works whether you book a package holiday or plan it all yourself. It covers your group for medical emergencies, cancellations, lost bags and more. It doesn’t matter how the trip is arranged.
Booking through a package holiday provider? You might get some protection under the EU Package Travel Directive. But it doesn’t replace travel insurance. That’s because it doesn’t cover you if you need to cancel in an emergency. It won’t cover emergency medical expenses, repatriation back to Ireland or lost personal belongings.
Booking flights, hotels, and activities separately comes with more risk. Each part of your trip may have different cancellation rules. Group insurance helps protect everyone under one policy, making it easy to make a claim.
Group travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
Travelling with loved ones who have medical conditions? We’re here to make life easier. With cover for over 1,300 conditions, getting a group travel quote is easy. Just make sure you declare pre-existing conditions for everyone in your group. That way, you’re all protected if the unexpected happens.
Group getaways should be about enjoying time together. That’s why our group travel insurance includes cover for medications and mobility aids. It even covers delays caused by medical conditions.
Here are just some of the conditions we can cover
- Asthma
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Disabilities
- Epilepsy
- Heart conditions
Group travel insurance tips and things to know
We’re a nation that loves to go big when we travel. Fáilte Ireland’s research on group travel in Ireland shows that friend getaways and special occasion trips are a growing trend. Multi-generational holidays are also on the rise.
With that in mind, here’s how to get the most from your group travel policy and avoid any surprises along the way.
- Check that every destination on your itinerary is included when you get your group travel insurance quote.
- Make sure the cover lasts the full trip. Some group holidays stretch over weeks or involve multiple stops.
- Find out if everyone needs to travel together. Single-trip group travel insurance only covers everyone named if they leave and return on the same dates.
- Declare all pre-existing medical conditions. It helps avoid issues later and ensures everyone’s properly covered.
- Compare prices. Group cover is generally cheaper than buying individual policies. But sometimes family travel insurance or individual policies may be a better fit.
- Check that your activities are included. Planning to ski, play rugby or go quad-biking? You might need to add extra cover for anything adventurous.
- Read the policy wording carefully. Look out for exclusions around alcohol use or risky behaviour, especially in group settings.

What our customers say
Insurance for the grown-up family
"Trying to get travel insurance for adult children (they will always be my children no matter their age) was maddening until I found this company. Simply select the group option and enter the details.”

Is travel insurance cheaper for groups?
Group travel insurance is usually cheaper than buying separate policies for everyone. The bigger the group, the more it makes sense. Our group travel insurance covers up to 10 people under just one policy. That means you get one set of documents and one point of contact if you need to make a claim.
But it’s not always the cheapest option. If someone in your group has a pre-existing medical condition, it could raise the premium for everyone. In that case, it might be more cost-effective for them to take out their own policy. If you’re travelling as a family, our family travel insurance may work out cheaper.
Want to find out what will be the most cost-effective option for you? Give us a call or get a quote online. We’ll help you get just what you need.
How many people can be included in group travel insurance cover?
Our group travel insurance covers up to 10 people. It’s ideal for larger groups. Travelling with children? Our family travel insurance might be a better fit. It covers one or two adults aged 18 or over, and between one and eight children under 18.
When might group travel cover not work?
Group travel insurance is a great option when everyone’s plans align. But it might not always be the best fit.
It might not suit you if:
- You want to insure a single trip when travellers have different departure dates.
- If someone in your group needs extra cover, like winter sports or gadget protection.
- If someone in your group has a pre-existing medical condition.
If you’re not sure, talk to us. We’ll help you explore your options to find the best cover for you.
Do you have to be related to get group travel insurance?
No. The individual members of a group travel insurance policy do not need to be related. You don’t even need to share the same address. Our group holiday insurance is available for people travelling together, regardless of where they live.
Do we need group travel insurance if we have EHICs?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you access to public healthcare in EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. But it doesn’t cover everything. For example, it won’t pay for private treatment, lost baggage, trip cancellations, or repatriation back to Ireland.
Group travel insurance fills those gaps. It protects your whole group under one policy, making it easier to manage and often more cost-effective. It also means you’re covered for things the EHIC doesn’t. Things like stolen belongings, missed flights, or needing to cancel if someone falls ill before the trip.
Can I add people to my group travel cover after it’s started?
Left someone out? Talk to us. You may be able to add people before your trip begins.
However, once the trip has started, you won’t be able to add new travellers. That’s because your cover is based on the details you gave us when you bought it. Adding someone later could affect the terms of your policy.
Are there age limits on group travel insurance?
Not with JustCover. We can insure travellers over 80, and beyond. Children are covered too, as long as they’re travelling with an adult and named on the same policy. The only age limit we apply is for our winter sports add-on. This has an upper age limit of 65.
Can I add sports and activities cover to my group travel insurance?
Yes, you can – but you might not need to. Our group travel insurance includes cover for over 100 sports and activities as standard. The list includes many popular holiday activities, from hiking and cycling to paddleboarding and even bungee jumping. Take a look at the Policy Wording to find out exactly what is and isn’t included.
Planning something more adventurous? You can easily add extra cover for higher-risk activities or winter sports. Just let us know what’s on the itinerary when you get your quote. We’ll help tailor your policy to match your plans.
