Do you need travel insurance for Thailand?
If you’re travelling to Thailand from Ireland, getting travel insurance is highly recommended. It’s not a legal requirement, but it does protect you from all the things that could go wrong on your trip.
- Covers the essentials. Our policies cover emergency medical care, trip cancellations, lost belongings, and optional extras for adventure sports or backpacking.
- Covers medical costs. Medical care in Thailand can be expensive. A motorbike accident, without insurance, can cost between €6,000 - €60,000. Insurance can cover the costs of expensive medical treatment. An EHIC won’t cover you in this scenario.
- Covers trip cancellation and disruption. If your trip to Thailand is cancelled or disrupted due to political protests, sudden illness or injury, travel insurance can help cover any costs incurred².

How much is travel insurance for Thailand?
The price of travel insurance for Thailand varies depending on your trip details and personal circumstances. Costs are affected by:
- Trip length. Longer trips usually mean higher premiums.
- Age of traveller. Premiums increase with age, especially for holidaymakers over 65.
- Pre-existing medical conditions. Declaring conditions may increase the cost, but it ensures you’re covered if you need treatment.
- Adventure activities. Cover for scuba diving, hiking, or motorbike hire may require a specialist policy or add-on.
- Baggage and gadget cover. Higher-value items may push up the cost.
- Level of cover chosen. Higher medical limits, lower excesses, and cancellation cover increase the price but give more protection.
Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand from Ireland?
Irish passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days if entering Thailand by air, or up to 15 days if arriving overland from a neighbouring country. This is part of Thailand’s visa exemption scheme.
If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for a 60-day tourist visa before travelling, or extend your visa once in Thailand at an immigration office. Overstaying your visa can lead to fines, detention, and being banned from re-entering the country.
It’s also worth noting that from 1st of May 2025, all non-Thai nationals entering Thailand are required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within three days of their date of arrival.
Backpackers and long-term holidaymakers should plan ahead and check the most up-to-date entry requirements before booking. The Thailand embassy website or the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs sites are the best official sources for this information.
How does healthcare work in Thailand?
Healthcare in Thailand is a mix of public and private services. While the public system is low-cost, most tourists and expats rely on private hospitals. These offer excellent standards of care, often with English-speaking staff. That said, treatment can be very expensive for uninsured tourists. Hospitals may also require proof of insurance or payment up front before starting treatment.
With Thailand travel insurance, you don’t need to worry about these things. High medical costs are covered; we can help you locate local pharmacies and GPs, and our claims process is easy.
Remember, you must declare any pre-existing conditions during your quote process. Otherwise, you may not be covered when it comes to making a claim.
Understanding vaccinations and illnesses
Before travelling, check the latest Irish Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice for Thailand (DFA). This includes updates on local health risks, required vaccinations, and seasonal outbreaks.
For Thailand, vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are commonly recommended. Some rural areas may also carry a malaria risk. Irish holidaymakers should speak to their GP or a travel health clinic well before departure.
Will the EHIC cover me for my trip to Thailand?
No. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only provides access to state healthcare in the EU and EEA. It does not offer any medical cover in Thailand. You will need to take out travel insurance for Thailand to be properly protected.
Find the best travel insurance for Thailand
Choosing the right policy is important to make sure you get the most out of your trip. We have options to suit holidaymakers of all ages, needs and preferences.
Best for one-off holidays, with cover for emergency medical treatment, cancellations, lost baggage, and optional add-ons for adventure activities.
Ideal for regular holidaymakers, including those heading away more than once a year. This can save money compared to buying separate single-trip policies.

When to buy Thailand holiday insurance
As with all travel insurance policies, regardless of where you’re headed, it’s best to buy as soon as you book your trip. That way, you’re protected if you need to cancel before you travel. If you fall ill, experience a bereavement or your flight or boat is cancelled, you’re covered financially.
The latest you can buy travel insurance to Thailand is right up until the day you leave. However, this isn’t a good idea, as you won’t be protected if something happens leading up to your departure.
What to do before travelling to Thailand
- Check your passport validity. It must be valid for at least six months from the date you enter Thailand.
- Visa requirements. Most Irish citizens don’t need a visa for stays of up to 30 days, but check if you need a longer visa.
- Contact your bank. Let them know you’re abroad to avoid problems using your cards.
- Get travel insurance. Take us with you on your trip for full cover. And be sure to declare any pre-existing conditions during your quote process.
- Travel warnings. The Irish DFA provides up-to-date safety and security advice. So keep an eye on this until you travel.
- Prescription medicines. Some medicines that are legal in Ireland may be restricted in Thailand. Always carry a doctor’s note and check local rules.
Specialist travel insurance for Thailand
Whether you’re backpacking solo across Thailand, visiting family or heading for a one-off trip, we’ve got policies to suit every traveller.
Cover that takes into account the higher risks of illness or injury as you get older, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
Travel insurance with medical conditions
Declare your conditions upfront and travel knowing you’re properly covered if you need treatment abroad.
Protection for the whole family, including children, so you’re covered for accidents, cancellations, and lost luggage.
Extra cover for cruise-specific risks such as missed ports, cabin confinement, or medical emergencies at sea.
Thailand travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
If you’re living with a medical condition, travel health insurance becomes even more important. Thailand’s private hospitals offer excellent care, but they often come with a high price tag. By declaring your conditions when you buy your policy, you’ll be protected if you need treatment.
This includes cover for emergency hospital stays, repatriation, and ongoing prescriptions, provided your condition is declared and accepted at the time of purchase.
Common conditions we cover include:
- Asthma
- Atrial fibrillation
- Cancer
- COPD
- Diabetes
- Disability
- Heart conditions
- High blood pressure
- Stroke

Thailand travel insurance tips and recommendations
Planning ahead can make your trip safer and less stressful. Here are some key tips for Irish holidaymakers heading to Thailand:
- Vaping. E-cigarettes and vaping are illegal in Thailand. Being caught with them can lead to heavy fines or even prison. Do not pack your e-cigarettes or vapes!
- Prescriptions. Carry medicines in their original packaging along with a doctor’s letter. Some medications that are common in Ireland are restricted or banned in Thailand.
- Mosquitoes. Dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases are present. Pack repellent and use nets where possible.
- Malaysia/Thailand border. The DFA warns of security risks in Thailand’s southern provinces near the Malaysian border. Avoid non-essential travel to these areas.
Other things to consider
- Currency. The Thai baht is the official currency. ATMs are widely available, but many charge withdrawal fees.
- Smoking. Smoking is banned in many public places and on several beaches. Breaking the rules can result in fines.
- Alcohol. Alcohol sales are restricted at certain times of day and during religious holidays. Drunk behaviour in public is frowned upon.
- Crime. Petty theft and tourist scams are common in busy areas. Keep valuables secure and be cautious with tuk-tuks and taxis.
- Religion and etiquette. Thailand is a Buddhist country. Show respect at temples by dressing modestly and removing shoes before entering. Never touch someone’s head or point your feet at people or religious objects
- Transport. Road safety standards can be poor. Motorbike accidents are common among tourists. Always wear a helmet when hiring a bike, and check your travel insurance covers this.
- Language. Thai is the official language. English is spoken in major tourist areas but less so in rural regions, so it can help to learn a few basic Thai phrases.
Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for Thailand
Is travelling to Thailand safe?
Thailand is generally safe for tourists, but like any busy destination, there are risks. Petty theft and scams can happen in tourist hotspots. The DFA also advises avoiding travel near the Malaysian border due to ongoing unrest. Travel insurance helps give you peace of mind if something goes wrong.
Will I be covered for emergency medical treatment in Thailand?
Yes. With the right travel insurance policy, you’ll be covered for emergency medical treatment in private hospitals, which can be very expensive. This includes hospital stays, ambulance fees, and medical repatriation back to Ireland if needed.
Is travel insurance a legal requirement for Thailand?
Travel insurance is not currently a legal requirement for most Irish tourists. However, it is strongly recommended. Many private hospitals will not treat you without proof of insurance or a large upfront payment.
Will I be covered if I rent a motorbike in Thailand?
Motorbike hire is very popular in Thailand, but it comes with higher risks. You will only be covered if your policy includes motorbike use and:
- You wear a crash helmet
- You hold a valid licence that covers the size of the motorbike (especially if it's over 125cc)
Always check your policy documents before renting, as failure to meet these conditions means you won’t be covered if something goes wrong.
What should I do if I lose my passport while in Thailand?
First, report the loss to the local police and get a report. Then, contact the Irish Embassy in Bangkok for an emergency travel document. Your travel insurance may cover the cost of replacing your passport and any related expenses.
Can I travel to Thailand with less than 6 months on my passport?
No. Thailand requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Without this, you may be denied boarding or refused entry. Always check your passport well in advance.
Does travel insurance cover activities like scuba diving and snorkelling in Thailand?
Yes. Under JustCover’s standard policy, both scuba diving and snorkelling are covered without the need for additional add-ons, provided you meet the conditions outlined in the policy.
- Scuba diving is covered up to 30 metres
- Snorkelling is covered up to 10 metres
However, always make sure you meet the safety guidelines and qualifications required, and read your Policy Wording for any limitations, exclusions, or safety requirements (e.g. diving with a certified instructor or within recognised limits).
