What is travel insurance for over 50s?
Travel insurance for over 50s protects you from issues you might face with your holiday. We’re here if plans change, flights get delayed or if something goes wrong abroad.
Whether you’re hitting the beach in Europe, adventuring around the world, or heading on holiday with your family, we have a policy for you. Plus, we offer annual multi-trip cover, if you’re lucky enough to be going away more than once.
We’ll consider more than 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol and disabilities. We can even offer cover if you have multiple conditions at once.
Over 50s travel insurance includes:
- Emergency medical care: Including access to our 24/7 emergency helpline and repatriation back to Ireland if needed. We can even offer cover for your pre-existing medical conditions. Just make sure you declare them in our medical questionnaire.
- Unexpected cancellation: This covers certain reasons out of your control. For example, if one of your family members becomes seriously ill or dies, or you’re made redundant.
- Cover if your bags are stolen, lost or damaged: Go away knowing you’re protected. Taking your camera, tablet, phone or other gadgets? We have optional cover for those, too.
- Cover that suits you and your trip: Whether you’re holidaying with family, friends or your partner, get everyone covered on the same policy. We also offer additional protection for activities that aren’t included as standard, like cruises and golf holidays. Find out more about our cover and any exclusions in our Policy Wording.
Why do you need over 50s travel insurance?
It’s always smart to buy comprehensive cover for your holiday, but it’s even more important as you get older. Holiday insurance for over 50s protects you if something goes wrong. Plus, as a specialist provider, we offer travel health insurance for over 50s with pre-existing medical conditions.
We’ve got your back, wherever you’re heading.
- Are you one of the many in their fifties who find they have more time and disposable income for holidays? TILDA in Ireland found: “Quality of life doesn’t decline linearly with age, but instead increases to a peak at age 68”. Protect your trip with over 50s travel insurance.
- The Department of Foreign Affairs advises: “Buying comprehensive travel insurance can save you and your family a lot of money if something goes wrong. It will also help you get the medical attention you need, when you need it. Hospital bills can quickly run into thousands of euros, and a medical evacuation back to Ireland can cost thousands more.”
- Public Health Ireland reports that “11% of the population over 50 in ROI suffer from two or more chronic diseases”. If you have a pre-existing condition, you may not be covered by a standard provider. At JustCover, we believe everyone deserves to enjoy their holiday and will consider over 1,300 conditions, even if you have multiple conditions at once.

How much does travel insurance for over 50s cost?
Your quote for over 50s travel insurance will depend on a number of factors. These include:
- Your age and any pre-existing medical conditions: Your quote will be higher if you’re more likely to need to make a claim. If you’re in your late fifties or have a pre-existing medical condition, the chances of facing a medical emergency are higher.
- Where you’re visiting and how long you’re going for: A longer trip will carry more risks than a weekend away. Meaning you’re more likely to make a claim. While some countries have expensive emergency medical care, such as the USA.
- Any optional cover you need: We have a whole range of extra cover for activities not included as standard. While we offer special protection for golf and cruise holidays.

From checking your vaccinations are up to date, to digging out your passport. There are lots of ways you can prepare for your trip:
1. Make sure you’re fit to travel
Speak to your GP or medical team if you have one. This is particularly important if you have a pre-existing medical condition. They will be able to advise you on whether you’re fit to travel and any precautions you should take. You should also speak to them or a local travel clinic about whether you need any vaccinations before you go.
Make sure you have enough medication for your trip, plus extra if you’re delayed. Some countries have restrictions on some medications, so double-check information for your destination.
Your airline may need a fit-to-fly certificate if you have a pre-existing medical condition. You should also speak to them about any assistance you may require or if you need medical equipment on board.
2. Buy travel insurance for over 50s
Look for over 50s holiday insurance which covers you for emergency medical expenses, unexpected cancellation, stolen belongings and more. Make sure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions you have; otherwise, you risk not being covered for any claims. At JustCover, we’ll consider more than 1,300 medical conditions and have no upper age limit.
You should also pack your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if visiting a country covered by the scheme.
3. Read up on your destination
Research your destination and where the nearest emergency medical facilities are in case you need them. Along with any shops and other essentials you may need. Make sure you’re prepared for the local weather and any other conditions that might impact you, such as high altitude. Take precautions in the sun, drink lots of water and plan frequent breaks to rest.
Check any entry requirements using the Department of Foreign Affairs website and make sure your passport has enough time left on it. Most countries require at least six months' validity from your date of arrival.
Frequently asked questions about Over 50s travel insurance
Are there age limits for travel insurance?
Many standard providers do have age limits on their travel insurance policies. However, at JustCover, we believe everyone deserves to enjoy their holiday knowing they’re covered. That’s why we have no upper age limit, so you can get on with relaxing on your trip.
Note: We do have an age limit of 65 on our winter sports cover.
Are there limits on the length of trip for the over 50s?
We do have some restrictions on trip length, depending on the type of policy you’re looking for. Single trip policies can cover holidays up to 365 days long depending on where you’re going and your age.
Our annual multi-trip policies cover holidays of up to 31 or 45 days each, depending on the level of cover you picked. Always read your Policy Wording or call our team if you’re unsure.
Should you consult your GP before travelling?
It’s important to speak to your GP or medical team before you go away, to check that you’re fit to travel. This is especially important if you have a pre-existing medical condition. They will be able to advise you on any precautions you should take and any risks to watch out for.
Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as insurance?
When visiting a country where the card applies, take both your EHIC and over 50s travel insurance. The European Health Insurance Card will give you access to some state emergency medical care at the same price as locals. This won’t always be free and won’t include all costs. That’s why it’s important to also take travel insurance for over 50s with you, so you’re covered for costs such as medical repatriation.
Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 50?
You must be fit to travel to buy travel insurance for over 50s. If you need to make a claim, we may contact your doctor to check this. However, we do not ask you to undergo a medical assessment to get your quote. Simply declare your pre-existing medical conditions and fill in our medical questionnaire.
Read our Policy Wording for more details.
How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?
This will depend on what you’re claiming for:
- Medical emergencies: Call our 24/7 medical emergency helpline as soon as possible. This must be done before making a claim.
- Other claims: Submit your claim online within 30 days of your trip ending.
You’ll need to keep a number of documents as evidence, such as medical reports and receipts. Make sure you read our Claims page and Policy Wording for full details and any terms and conditions.
What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?
If you face a medical emergency, you should call our 24/7 emergency medical helpline as soon as possible. You’ll need to provide documents and receipts as evidence, so keep anything you’re given. Our Claims page and our Policy Wording details everything you need to know.
When should over 50s buy travel insurance?
If you’re buying over 50s travel insurance, it’s smart to be prepared:
- Planning ahead? You can buy travel insurance for over 50s as early as 12 months before you go away. Meaning you’ll be covered for unexpected cancellation for as long as possible.
- Last minute? You can still buy a policy on the day of departure, as long as you haven’t passed through customs in Ireland yet. See our Policy Wording for more details.
Can you extend your policy if your travel plans change or you need to stay longer?
This depends on whether you’ve left for your holiday or not:
- Haven’t left yet? Contact us using the details in your policy documents. There will be an additional cost, but we’ll be happy to look at extending your cover.
- On your trip? You can ask us to extend your policy, but we’re able to accept the changes in fewer cases. We’ll only consider the extension if no claims have been made or are pending.
- On holiday and facing an issue that’s covered, such as sickness? You’ll automatically receive an extension of up to 30 days if you must stay longer due to a covered event. See our Policy Wording for more details.
