What is travel insurance for over 65s?

Travel insurance for over 65s is designed for people who want to explore the world later in life. It covers unexpected costs if things go wrong on your trip. This includes emergency medical care, trip cancellations, lost baggage, delays and more. It’s ideal for senior travellers who want to jet off knowing they’re covered no matter what. With no upper age limit, you can enjoy your trip knowing we’ve got your back.

Why do you need over 65s travel insurance?

As we age, our travel needs change. Medical issues can become more common, and trips may cost more to protect you. Over 65’s travel insurance makes sure you’re covered for risks that are more likely later in life.

  • Older travellers are more likely to claim for medical treatment abroad. Around 83% of over-65-year-olds are living with at least one medical condition. We cover over 1,300 conditions to make sure you’re covered in case of a flare-up. Without insurance, medical bills can reach into the tens of thousands.
  • Around the world support. Should you need any assistance or support relating to a medical condition, we’re on call 24/7. Simply call our helpline and our team will be there to help.
  • Help with lost belongings. More than 60,000 items were lost in UK airports last year. It’s not uncommon to misplace things while travelling. And if you do, it’s nice knowing you’re covered for some, if not all, the expenses.

No one wants to be worrying about the ‘what ifs’. With travel insurance, you can travel knowing you’re fully covered, whatever happens. To get your quote, you can either do this online or speak to our team directly.

What does JustCover’s over 65s travel insurance cover?

It’s not uncommon for people over 65 to have health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart conditions. However, you can still get travel insurance if you declare these conditions when you buy your policy. For full details of what is and isn’t included, read our Policy Wording

What's covered

Emergency medical expenses - If you get sick or injured while abroad, we’ll cover emergency treatment. This also includes getting you back home if needed.

Trip cancellation - If you can’t travel due to something like illness, jury duty, or the death of a loved one, we’ll help recover your costs. You’ll also be covered if you have to cut your trip short.

Lost or stolen belongings - If your bags or valuables go missing or are damaged, you’ll be covered. You can also add gadget cover for things like your phone, tablet, or camera.

Personal liability - If you accidentally hurt someone or damage property while away, we can help cover legal costs.

Legal protection - If you need to claim compensation for something that happened on your trip, we’ll help with certain legal costs.

Travel delays - If your flight is delayed, you may get compensation for the time lost.

24/7 emergency medical helpline - You’ll have access to help whenever you need it, wherever you are.

What's not covered

Undeclared medical conditions - If you don’t tell us about existing medical conditions, we won’t be able to cover related claims.

Cancellations that aren’t covered - We can’t cover cancellations for reasons like simply changing your mind.

Uncovered activities or destinations - Always check your policy. Some sports or destinations may need extra cover.

Travelling against medical advice - We don’t cover trips taken for planned medical treatment or if your doctor advises you not to travel.

Known risks before booking - If you already knew about a problem before buying your policy, you likely won’t be covered.

Claims below your excess - If your claim is less than your policy excess, you won’t be able to make a claim.

Over 65s travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

Almost 75% of people aged 65 to 74 years have a diagnosed long-term condition. In most cases, this can make getting travel insurance difficult. And more expensive. But with JustCover, we understand this, and we’re here to help. Just be sure to declare any pre-existing conditions during your quote process. If you don’t, it may invalidate any claims you make related to your condition.

We cover over 1,300 conditions for over 65s, and we have no upper age limit. Whether it’s a post-retirement holiday, getting away with the grandkids or just some much-needed time away, we’ve got you covered, wherever you’re headed.

Here are a few of the common conditions we cover:

  • Heart conditions
  • COPD
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Stroke
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Disabilities
  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy

Why is it so important to declare pre-existing conditions?

If you don’t declare your health conditions, your insurer can refuse to pay for related treatment. That means you could be left with very high medical bills. Declaring them ensures you get cover for the care you might need while abroad.

How much does travel insurance for over 65s cost?

The older you are, the more expensive travel insurance becomes. This is because there are more risks associated with older travellers. The cost of travel insurance for over 65s will depend on a few key factors:

  • Your destination. Travelling further away or to countries with higher healthcare costs, like the USA or Australia, usually increases the price.
  • Trip length. Longer trips cost more to insure than short breaks.
  • Your health. Cover for pre-existing medical conditions can affect the cost.
  • Type of cover. Single trip cover is often cheaper for one holiday, while annual multi-trip policies can save money if you travel several times a year.
  • Activity level. Adding cover for activities like winter sports, golf, or cruises may increase the premium.

Why is travel insurance more expensive for people over 65?

60% of 65-74 year olds are living with long-term conditions. If you are one of these people, travel insurance is absolutely essential. Even if your condition is under control, medical flare-ups can happen. In this event, having travel insurance can cover you should you need emergency treatment. Just be sure to declare any pre-existing conditions during your quote process.

Expert travel insurance recommendations from our team

"Travel in your later years is some of the most rewarding you’ll ever do, but it’s also when the right insurance matters most. Over 65s policies are tailored for travellers who value their health and aren’t done exploring the world."

What our customers say

Easy to negotiate web site

“Easy to negotiate website. Delighted with the cost of the insurance. We are both in our mid-sixties and thankfully very healthy, enjoy travelling now our family has grown up. We don't smoke and eat and drink sensibly. We have felt for the past few years that we have been penalised for being over 60. Delighted that a new insurance company has joined the Irish market.”

Tips for travelling when over 65 years old

Plan ahead. Book your insurance as soon as you book your trip so you’re covered for cancellations.

  • See your doctor. Have a check-up before travelling, especially if you have ongoing health conditions.
  • Pack medication carefully. Bring enough for your whole trip and keep it in your hand luggage. It also might be worth scouting out local pharmacies and GPs if you need to visit.
  • Check the climate. Be aware of extreme heat or cold at your destination, and plan activities accordingly.
  • Take it slow. Allow extra time for travel days and avoid overly tight schedules.
  • Stay connected. Keep emergency contacts and your insurer’s helpline number handy.
  • Watch what you eat and drink. Take care with local food and water to avoid stomach problems.

Frequently asked questions about over 65s travel insurance

Are there age limits for travel insurance?

Many insurers set age limits, but we don’t. With JustCover, you can enjoy travel insurance with no upper age limit. Our team can help you choose a policy tailored to your needs.

Are there limits on the length of trip for the over 65s?

Yes. Most over 65s policies limit single trips to between 30 and 90 days. If you want to travel for longer, you’ll need a specialist long-stay policy.

At JustCover, we’ll consider travel insurance for customers over 65, even for extended getaways. The trip length we can offer depends on your age and the type of policy you choose, so it’s best to check what’s right for your plans before booking.

We’ll also consider cover for more than 1,300 pre-existing conditions, so you can get the travel health insurance protection that fits your health and holiday.

Note: Our winter sports cover has an upper age limit of 65.

Should you consult your GP before travelling?

It’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor before you go, especially if you have any ongoing medical conditions or have recently been unwell. They can advise if you’re fit to travel and help you prepare. Plus, we’ll be better able to tailor a policy to your needs with an updated medical profile.

Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as insurance?

Yes. Your EHIC can help you access state healthcare in the EU at a reduced cost or for free. But it won’t cover private care, repatriation, or cancellation costs. That’s why travel insurance is still so important.

Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 65?

Not usually in person. During our quote process, we will ask you to answer a few medical questions online or over the phone. It’s important to answer honestly so your cover is valid.

How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?

Contact us as soon as possible. We’ll explain what documents you need, such as receipts, medical reports, or police statements. Keep all evidence safe until your claim is settled. Better yet, you can make a claim here.

What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?

Call the local emergency number to make sure you are safe. As soon as you are in a position to call us, contact our emergency helpline straight away. We can help you find the right hospital, arrange direct payment for treatment, and keep your family informed.

When should over 65s buy travel insurance?

You should buy your policy as soon as you book your trip. This means you’re covered for cancellation straight away if something unexpected stops you from travelling.

Can you extend your policy if your travel plans change or you need to stay longer?

Yes, many insurers allow you to extend your policy, but you must do this before your current policy runs out. You may need to pay an extra premium for the extra days.
