What is worldwide travel insurance?
Worldwide travel insurance covers you for issues you might face while away. Whether you’re taking a bucket-list trip to Australia, adventuring across the USA or travelling around the world. Travel knowing you're covered. It's that simple.
Get protection for emergency medical costs, travel delays and cancellation. As well as cover for stolen bags and personal liability. We can cover most global destinations.
Do you need international travel insurance?
Wherever you’re going, international trip insurance is a holiday essential:
- The Department of Foreign Affairs advises all travellers from Ireland: “Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers all your planned activities”. You should look for worldwide travel insurance that covers emergency medical expenses, your belongings and cancellation. Some countries, such as Cuba, even make travel insurance a mandatory entry requirement.
- Emergency medical care in countries like America can be extremely expensive. The US government estimates: “The average cost of a 3-day hospital stay is around $30,000”. Without insurance, you would face paying this cost from your own pocket.
- It’s vital you buy worldwide travel insurance that covers your pre-existing medical conditions. Otherwise, you won’t be covered for costs linked to them while away. For instance, if you have a heart condition and have a heart attack on holiday. NOCA estimates 6,000 Irish people a year will be admitted to hospital with a heart attack. At JustCover, we cover more than 1,300 medical conditions. Including high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes.
We help you take off, knowing you’ve made the smart choice. In fact, 98.8% of our customers would recommend JustCover to family and friends³. Call us for free or get a quote online.

Exclusions for worldwide travel insurance
There are certain situations that won’t be covered by worldwide travel insurance. These include:
- Travelling somewhere that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises against
- If you’re under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs at the time you have an accident
- Making a claim that’s linked to illegal activity
- Travelling against the advice of a medical professional
- Travelling to get planned medical treatment
- Preventable illness, such as if you didn’t get a recommended vaccination
- Claims related to pre-existing medical conditions you didn’t declare
- Activities not covered as standard, such as extreme sports
- Natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes
It’s important that you read our Policy Wording to understand all exclusions.
How much does worldwide trip insurance cost?
From the length of your trip to pre-existing medical conditions. The cost of international trip insurance depends on a variety of things. These include:
- Your age: Unfortunately, there is a higher risk of you needing to claim if you’re older. So your quote is likely to be higher.
- Pre-existing medical conditions: We’ll ask you questions about your health and tailor your quote to you. So if your condition is well-controlled, the price will be lower than someone who needs a lot of medical support.
- Where you’re going: Some countries, such as the USA, have expensive medical systems. So, policies covering these places will be higher.
- How long you’re going for: If you’re away for a whole year, you’re more likely to need to make a claim compared to a weekend trip.
- Who you want to insure: If you want to include friends or family on your policy, the cost will reflect that.
- Any additional cover you require: Such as cover for activities not included in your policy as standard. Or if you want extra protection for cruises, golf trips, gadgets and more. Read our Policy Wording to understand what is and isn’t included.
How to lower the cost of your policy
If you’re looking for cheaper worldwide travel insurance, you can consider:
- Taking a shorter trip
- Visiting countries with lower-cost healthcare
- Only taking part in activities covered in your policy as standard
- Looking at an annual multi-trip policy if you’re going away more than once. It might work out as cheaper than multiple single policies

Do you need worldwide travel insurance if you have an EHIC?
If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), it’ll provide you with some cover but not everything you need. The Department for Foreign Affairs says: “The EHIC is not a substitute for proper travel insurance provided by a reputable insurer.”
An EHIC will only give you access to some state healthcare in certain countries. Most are in Europe. Care may not be free, just at the same price as it is for locals. Medical repatriation and other important costs aren’t covered by the EHIC either.
It’s important to take both worldwide travel insurance and your EHIC.

Looking forward to your worldwide trip? There are lots of ways to prepare so that your trip goes smoothly:
- Check your passport: Most countries will want you to have at least 6 months left on your passport. So always check with plenty of time to renew it if needed.
- Visit the Department of Foreign Affairs website: Here you’ll find travel advice on safety, local laws and more. Remember, we can’t cover you if the department advises against travel.
- Get your visas: Check if you need a visa for your destination. As well as anywhere you may be stopping over in.
- Book your vaccinations: Follow HSE advice and contact your local GP or travel clinic. Some vaccinations need to be given in stages over a number of weeks or months. So, plan this in advance.
- Plan how to pay: Look into whether it’s best to pay with cash or card while away and how to get the best conversion rates. Take backup payment methods in case you need them.
- Learn about local laws and customs: From following local etiquette to not breaking the law, this is really important. The Department of Foreign Affairs also has useful information on this.
- Check your international holiday insurance covers everything you need: Always read your Policy Wording and documents thoroughly. Make sure all activities and destinations you’re planning are included.
Frequently asked questions about worldwide travel insurance
Does worldwide travel insurance cover Europe?
You can include European countries in your worldwide travel insurance. Whether you’re planning a single trip with multiple destinations or buying an annual policy. However, if you’re only travelling within Europe, avoid annual policies with global destinations. As the price is likely to be higher.
Should you get annual or single trip worldwide travel insurance?
It depends on how many times you’re going away. Single trip worldwide travel insurance is probably best if you only have one trip planned. If you’re going away more than once in the next 12 months, you could consider an annual policy. It may save you time and money, depending on the country you’re heading to.
Our multi-trip annual worldwide holiday insurance is split into two categories:
- Worldwide except the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean
- Worldwide, including the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean
Countries in the second category tend to have more expensive healthcare. Meaning policies are often higher in price.
When should you buy worldwide travel insurance?
If you buy worldwide trip insurance straight after booking your trip, you’ll benefit from cancellation cover until you go. You can do this up to 12 months before you fly.
We know that you can’t always plan that far in advance. That’s why you can buy a policy right up until the day you travel. Although you must do this before you pass through customs in Ireland.
Read our Policy Wording for more details.
Will the EHIC cover you worldwide?
The EHIC mainly covers places in Europe, although it does include a few other countries. It’s important to remember that the European Health Insurance Card isn’t an alternative to worldwide travel insurance. You should take both when going away.
The EHIC only gives you access to some state healthcare at the same price as locals. This isn’t always free. It also doesn’t cover some important emergency costs, such as medical repatriation.
Is there an age limit on worldwide travel insurance?
Some insurance providers will have an age limit for worldwide holiday insurance. At JustCover, we don’t! That’s because we think everyone deserves to travel. Get worldwide travel insurance for:
- Over 50s
- Over 60s
- Over 70s
- Over 80s
Note: We have an age limit of 65 on our winter sports cover.
How long will you be covered for?
You’ll be covered for cancellation from the moment you buy your worldwide trip insurance. Other cover benefits apply over the duration of your trip, such as emergency medical expenses or lost or stolen belongings. For annual travel insurance, these benefits apply to all trips within the dates stated on your policy. As long as they aren’t longer than the maximum trip length. Up to a maximum of 183 days of travel per year.
Read our Policy Wording for full terms and conditions.
Can you get worldwide travel insurance if you have pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes, you can get worldwide travel insurance if you have pre-existing medical conditions. We can cover more than 1,300 conditions, including those with a terminal prognosis. Declare them and answer a few simple questions in our medical questionnaire. Then you’ll get your quote.
Are there any destinations that won’t be covered?
We can cover most countries, as long as you’re not travelling against the advice of The Department of Foreign Affairs.
