What is travel insurance for over 60s?
Travel insurance for over 60s will protect you while you’re away. Whether you need emergency medical help or your bags are lost or stolen, we’ve got your back, wherever you’re heading.
Many providers set age limits on travel insurance. At JustCover, we don’t. We offer senior travel insurance for over 60s and beyond, with cover available at any age.
Over 60s travel insurance includes:
- Up to €10,000 cancellation cover: If something goes wrong unexpectedly and you can no longer go away.
- Protection for emergency medical expenses and repatriation: Our 24/7 emergency medical helpline is there when you need it. Plus, we’ll consider cover for more than 1,300 pre-existing conditions, when many standard providers won’t.
- Help if your things are lost, stolen or damaged: Get protection for your bags, including your medical aids or prescription medication. Or add on extra gadget cover if needed.
We can offer cover whether you’re travelling close to home or far away. From holidays to the UK to see family, to a dream retirement trip across the world. What’s more, we have annual multi-trip cover if you have more than one break planned.
Read our Policy Wording for full details. We have an age limit of 65 on our winter sports cover.
Why do you need over 60s travel insurance?
Travel knowing you're covered. It's that simple. Holiday insurance for over 60s is vital if you want to protect yourself against high hospital bills and more:
- Over 60s are more likely to need emergency medical care on holiday. The ESRI in Ireland states that over 65s “are particularly high users of hospital services, accounting for over 60 per cent of inpatient bed days”. While Ageing In Place Ireland says that “around 30%” of over 65s “will experience at least one fall a year.” Without travel insurance, you’ll have to cover the medical costs yourself.
- “83% of over 65-year-olds are living with at least one medical condition”. According to the Pfizer Health and Science Index in Ireland. While “almost one in three are living with either Heart disease, COPD or Diabetes.” Many standard providers won’t include pre-existing medical conditions. At JustCover, we’ll consider more than 1,300 conditions.
- It’s important you buy the right cover for you. The World Health Organization says: “Travellers are strongly advised to obtain comprehensive travel insurance as a matter of routine and to declare any underlying health conditions to their travel insurers.”
We help you enjoy your holiday, knowing you’ve made the smart choice.

How much does travel insurance for over 60s cost?
Looking for the best price on travel insurance for over 60s? There are a few things that will impact your quote:
- Your age and pre-existing medical conditions: Both of these will affect how likely you are to make a claim. If you’re a senior traveller or have a condition, you have a higher chance of experiencing a medical emergency.
- How long you’re away for and where you’re visiting: The longer your trip, the more likely you are to make a claim. While certain countries, such as the USA, have expensive medical care. Your quote will be higher to reflect this.
- Optional extras: Going on a golf holiday or a cruise? Or perhaps you need additional cover for other activities? Pick from our range of optional extra cover.
Why is travel insurance more expensive for people over 60?
As you get older, you’re more likely to need emergency medical help on holiday. Your quote will need to reflect this risk. Even if you’re in good health, you are still at a higher risk of having an accident. In fact, the HSE says that “One third of older adults deemed at low risk of a fall experience a fall within 12 months”. This is why travel insurance tends to cost more for people over 60.

Going away for a weekend? Or a big retirement trip around the world. There are some simple things you can do to make sure your holiday goes smoothly.
1. Buy travel insurance for over 60s
Get protection for emergency medical expenses, if you have to cancel for certain reasons and for travel delays. Remember, if you’re visiting a country covered by the EHIC, take both your card and comprehensive travel insurance.
2. Check in with your doctor
Talk to your GP or medical specialist about your trip, how to prepare and any precautions you should take. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, take details of your doctor, medical history and any prescriptions away with you. Please note, we cannot cover you with travel insurance for over 60s if your doctor advises against travel.
3. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date
Speak to your local travel clinic about any boosters or new vaccinations you may need. They will be able to advise on guidance for your destination. You can find further details on the HSE website.
4. Pack plenty of medication
Plan to take enough for your trip, plus extra in case you are delayed. Split some of it between different bags in case one is stolen or delayed. Some countries have restrictions on the medication you can bring in, so research this in advance.
5. Make sure you have your passport
Check your passport has enough time left on it. You should also check any visa or entry requirements for the countries you’re visiting. You can find more information on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
6. Prepare for the airport
Speak to your airline in advance if you might need assistance. You should also talk to them if you have any medical aids you need to bring on board. They may need you to have a fit-to-fly certificate if you have a pre-existing medical condition.
7. Pack smart
Create a list to make sure you don’t forget anything important. Pick a suitcase or bag that’s easy to travel with. For instance, a suitcase with wheels. Take light, comfortable clothes that you can layer for warmth.
8. Take care of yourself while you’re away
Make sure you take precautions if visiting a hot country and stay hydrated. If you have mobility issues, book accommodation that’s accessible and close to anywhere you want to visit. Plan in plenty of breaks and time for rest in your itinerary.
Frequently asked questions about over 60s travel insurance
Are there age limits for travel insurance?
Many standard providers will have age limits for travel insurance. At JustCover, we have no upper age limit. We offer travel insurance for all ages. That’s because we think everyone deserves to go away on holiday knowing they’re covered.
Note: We do have an age limit of 65 on our winter sports cover.
When does travel insurance cover begin and end?
You’ll benefit from cancellation cover from the moment you buy travel insurance. You can buy a policy up to 12 months from the start of your trip. Your other benefits, such as emergency medical cover, will apply to the duration of your trip. See our over 60s travel insurance Policy Wording for more details.
Are there limits on the length of trip for the over 60s?
Yes, there are limits on the maximum trip length, but it depends on the type of policy you choose.
- Single trip policies can cover trips of up to 365 days, depending on your age and the destination.
- Annual multi-trip policies let you take multiple trips during the year, but each trip is limited to 31 or 45 days, depending on your level of cover.
If you’re planning a longer holiday, it’s a good idea to check your policy details. Or you can get in touch with our team to make sure you’ve got the right cover.
How do you make a claim on your holiday insurance?
If you have a medical emergency while you’re away, you must call our 24/7 medical emergency helpline as soon as possible. This must be done before making a claim on your travel insurance for over 60s.
If making a claim for something else, such as stolen belongings, you can submit your claim online. Do this within 30 days of your trip ending.
Read our claims page and Policy Wording for full details, including any documents you’ll need to keep. Such as receipts, medical records and police reports.
Do you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) as well as insurance?
If you’re visiting a country covered by the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), you should take both your card and travel insurance. Your EHIC will give you access to some emergency state healthcare at the same price as locals. However, it won’t cover all costs, such as medical repatriation or stolen belongings. That’s why comprehensive travel insurance is essential.
What should you do if you have a medical emergency while abroad?
Research your destination before you go. Make sure you know where the nearest hospital with an emergency department is and which local number to call if you need an ambulance.
Once you’re safe and receiving treatment, call our 24/7 emergency helpline as soon as possible and before making a claim with us. Read our claims page and Policy Wording for more details. Remember to save any documents you may need to claim, such as medical records and receipts.
Are mobility aids or medical equipment covered by travel insurance?
Yes, as long as you declare any pre-existing medical conditions to us in advance. We can cover your mobility aids and medical equipment against loss, theft and damage.
You must always declare your pre-existing medical conditions. If you don’t, you may invalidate your policy and won’t be covered for any claims you make.
When should over 60s buy travel insurance?
Buy your policy as soon as you’ve booked your trip, as far ahead as 12 months from your holiday. Cancellation cover kicks in from the moment you buy your policy. Other benefits will apply to the dates of your trip.
If you’re buying over 60s travel insurance at the last minute, we’ve also got you covered. You can buy a policy on the day of departure, as long as you haven’t gone through customs in Ireland yet. Read our Policy Wording for more details.
Can you include a companion on your policy?
Travelling with other people? We offer a range of travel insurance for over 60s covering:
- Travelling as a couple
- Going away with family
- Holidaying with friends
- If you need to include a carer on your policy
See our over 60s travel insurance Policy Wording for full details of what is and isn’t covered.
Can you get cover for an existing trip if you forgot to buy insurance before departure?
No, unfortunately, we cannot provide you with cover if you’ve already departed. You can buy travel insurance for over 60s on the day you leave for your trip, but you must not have gone through customs or left Ireland yet.
See our over 60s travel insurance Policy Wording for more details.
Do you need a medical assessment to get travel insurance if you’re over 60?
We try to keep holiday insurance for over 60s simple at JustCover. You complete our medical questionnaire and declare any pre-existing medical conditions you have. Then you’ll get your quote.
You must be fit to travel to buy a policy. If you need to make a claim, we may check with your doctor that this is the case. However, we do not ask you to undergo a medical assessment to get your quote. See our Policy Wording for full details.
Can you extend your policy if your trip is longer than expected?
Contact us using the details in your policy documents if you haven’t started your trip yet. We are happy to consider extending your policy, although there will be an additional cost for this.
You can also ask us about extending your policy once you’re on holiday, but we’re less likely to be able to accept the changes in these cases. We can only consider the extension if no claims have been made or are pending.
If you need to extend your trip due to a covered event, such as becoming ill, this will happen automatically (up to 30 days). Read our Policy Wording for more information.
