What might be asked in the medical questionnaire?
Our medical questionnaire is designed to be quick and simple. We need to ask you about your pre-existing medical conditions so we can tailor your quote to you. It’s wise to have your medical details on hand, such as any prescriptions you have, before starting.
Questions for holiday insurance for heart conditions may include:
- What diagnosis have you received?
- What treatment have you had/are you currently having?
- Are you taking any medication?
- Have you had a coronary stent, heart bypass, angioplasty, pacemaker or any surgery?
- How many heart attacks have you had?
- Are you currently experiencing any symptoms?
- When did you last see your medical team?
How much does travel insurance cost for people with heart conditions?
If you’re looking for specialist travel insurance for heart conditions, it is likely to be more expensive than a standard policy. This is because you’re more likely to need to make a claim. Maybe you have to cancel unexpectedly or are facing a medical emergency. However, as a specialist medical provider, we tailor your policy to you. So if your condition is well-controlled and you’re in good health, this will be reflected in the price.
Things that might impact your quote include:
- The length of your trip and where you’re going: If you’re going away for a long time, or visiting a place with expensive medical care, such as the USA, your quote will be higher.
- Which heart condition you have and its severity: Some heart conditions can result in more medical emergencies than others.
- Any medication or medical aids you’re taking away: If these need to be covered, it will impact your quote.
- Other pre-existing medical conditions: If you also have diabetes, COPD or another condition that requires cover, this may impact the cost.
- If you’re a senior traveller: Senior travellers more likely to need to make a claim for emergency medical expenses.
- If you need extra cover: We have a whole range of protection for cruises, gadgets and activity holidays, such as golf breaks.
If you’re looking for cheaper travel insurance for heart conditions, you could take a shorter trip or visit a country with an affordable healthcare system. We also offer annual multi-trip policies, which could save you time and money if you’re going away more than once.
Be honest about your heart condition when getting a quote. If you don’t declare it, your policy may be invalid, and any related claims could be turned down.

Will an EHIC cover you abroad if you have a heart condition?
If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you’ll get access to some emergency state medical care. This is only in countries that are part of the programme. It’ll be at the same price as locals, but it’s not always free.
It’s important to always take your EHIC and travel insurance for heart conditions with you. This is because the EHIC doesn’t cover all costs, such as medical repatriation. Travel insurance also offers other benefits, such as cancellation cover and protection for lost and stolen belongings.
Can you get travel insurance for children with heart conditions?
We can offer travel insurance for children with heart conditions. They must be on the same family policy as a responsible adult they’re travelling with. This is so the adult will also be covered if they have to stay longer due to a medical emergency.

If you’re travelling with a heart condition, there are some helpful ways to prepare. Remember, it’s vital you check any plans with your medical team before you go.
- “Avoid very cold and very hot climates,” says the HSE. Both of these can make your condition worse, along with a change in altitude and terrain. The Irish Heart Foundation advises: “Don’t get caught in the midday sun and remember to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.”
- Be prepared if you’re flying: If you have an internal defibrillator or pacemaker, the Irish Heart Foundation says you should carry your identification card and “ask to be hand-searched” by security. Check with your airline in case they need a fit-to-fly certificate. Or if you need any medical equipment on your flight or assistance at the airport. Take precautions against deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- Take extra medication: In case you’re delayed and need more. The Irish Heart Foundation also recommends you “keep extra supplies of your medication in your hand luggage in case your stowed luggage gets delayed.” Some countries might have rules on bringing certain medicines in, so check before leaving.
- Plan for any medical emergencies: Research the emergency facilities available to you at your destination and how you would reach them. Consider booking your hotel nearby. Pack a list of any medications you’re on, your medical history and your doctor’s contact details. Take your travel insurance details, along with your EHIC if visiting a country that accepts it.
- Think about the activities you want to do: The British Heart Foundation says, “do not go somewhere too difficult to walk, or take part in activities that are challenging, unless you’re confident you are fit enough.” Speak to your doctor for advice on any activities. Book your accommodation within easy distance of shops, restaurants, and anywhere you may want to go. Plan plenty of time to rest and relax.
- Talk to your doctor about your plans: They’ll give you advice on whether your holiday is suitable for you and your condition. As well as any precautions you should take. They might advise against your trip, especially if you’ve recently needed emergency medical help. For instance, the HSE says if you’re recovering from a heart attack: “It’s recommended that you do not go on long journeys or trips abroad for 6 to 8 weeks.”
