What is travel insurance for Asia?

Travel insurance for Asia is essential, whether you’re exploring Thailand, relaxing in Bali or taking in the culture in Japan. From South East Asia to India and beyond, we offer comprehensive cover for:

  • Emergency medical expenses: If you’re injured or get sick on holiday. Plus, our 24/7 emergency medical helpline is there when you need it.
  • Medical repatriation and evacuation: If you need to be flown somewhere for treatment in an emergency. Particularly important if you’re staying on an island in Asia with little medical care.
  • Protection for your belongings: Cover for your bags and things if they’re lost, stolen or damaged. We also offer optional gadget cover for phones, laptops, tablets and cameras.
  • And much more: Including legal protection, personal liability and travel delays cover. We help you take off with confidence, knowing you’ve made the smart choice.

Is travel insurance needed for Asia?

We know you invest time and money into planning a trip. That’s why it’s important to protect yourself and your holiday with travel insurance for Asia:

  • Roads in some Asian countries can be busier and more dangerous than in Ireland. In fact, the World Health Organisation reports that Thailand has one of the highest road traffic accident rates in the world. If you need emergency medical treatment, it’s important you’re covered.
  • Healthcare in some parts of Asia can be very expensive. Recently, Hong Kong and Singapore were found to be the most expensive cities in the world. You don’t want high bills coming from your own pocket.
  • Tourists can be a target for criminals in many Asian countries. For instance, the Department of Foreign Affairs says, “Petty Crime is common in Cambodia, particularly in urban areas”. They add: “Be aware that bag snatching occurs frequently”. Cover your things with travel insurance in Asia.
  • Natural disasters can be common across Asia. These include flooding in Laos, earthquakes and typhoons in China, and tsunamis in Japan. At JustCover, we offer optional natural disaster cover.

What does JustCover’s Asia trip insurance cover?

It’s important to find travel insurance for travelling in Asia that covers everything you need. Whether you plan to enjoy the countryside of Laos or the sights of Vietnam. We have a policy for you.

Always read our Policy Wording for full details of what is and isn’t included with travel insurance for Asia.

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation costs – This includes the costs of tests, medications and procedures necessary to treat an illness or injury while abroad. You’ll also be covered for repatriation, making sure you return safely to Ireland.

Cancellation – Cover for flight and accommodation costs if an unexpected event means you have to cancel your trip before you go.

Curtailment – Cover if you need to return home early following an emergency.

Travel delays – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time.

Personal belongings – You’ll be covered if your baggage or its contents are lost or stolen.

Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday.

Legal protection cover – Provides cover for your legal expenses if you have to claim compensation or damages due to something that happened while you were away on holiday.

What's not covered

Claims below the value of the excess – This is dependent on your policy level.

Known events or circumstances – Claims related to problems that you knew about before booking the trip or buying the travel insurance are not covered.

Medical conditions you don’t declare – You need to declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions.

Choosing not to travel – We know that sometimes plans change, but you’re only covered for cancellation where the reason falls within the policy terms and conditions.

Travelling against medical or government advice – We can’t cover you if you’ve been told not to go by a doctor or your medical team, or if you’re going away for treatment. We also can’t offer you a policy if the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against all or all but essential travel to a destination.

How much does Asia travel insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance will depend on you and your plans. We tailor your policy so that you get the cover you need. Factors that may impact the price include:

  • Your destination. If you’re visiting a place with expensive healthcare, like Singapore or Hong Kong, your policy is likely to cost more.
  • Your plans. Your policy will cost more if you need extra cover for water sports, extreme sports, gadgets or natural disasters. Or if you plan to travel around Asia for an extended period.
  • Your age. If you’re a senior traveller, you’re more likely to need to make a claim, so your policy may cost more.
  • Your pre-existing medical conditions. If you have any existing medical conditions, such as asthma or diabetes, your quote may be higher. As you’re more likely to make a claim.

Do you need travel insurance for Asia if you have an EHIC?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only covers European countries. Whether you’re visiting Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam or elsewhere in Asia, you won’t be covered by the scheme. That’s why you need travel insurance.

The EHIC gives you access to some emergency state healthcare in European countries covered by the scheme. This isn’t always free; it’s just the price a local would pay. It won’t cover all costs, such as medical repatriation.

Asia travel insurance tips and recommendations

When planning a trip to India, Malaysia or elsewhere in the continent, travel insurance is essential. It’s important to buy the right cover for you. Some factors to consider when buying travel insurance for travelling in Asia include:

  • Emergency medical cover: Medical care can be expensive in some Asian countries. You may be refused treatment until you can prove you have travel insurance or enough money to pay. Plus, many rural and island destinations in Asia will have limited facilities. So you may need to be flown somewhere else for treatment. It’s important to know you’re covered if this happens. At JustCover, you can get up to unlimited protection for emergency medical expenses and repatriation.
  • Gadgets: Taking photos of the Sri Lankan elephants with your DSLR? Enjoying the high-tech cities of Japan with your smartphone? If you’re taking away your phone, tablet, laptop or camera, take a look at our additional gadget cover.
  • Activities: Asia can be the perfect destination for an action-packed holiday. That’s why we cover 100 activities as standard with travel insurance in Asia. Make sure you check whether anything you have planned is covered using our Policy Wording. We have extra cover available for extreme and water sports if you need it.
  • Natural Disasters: Flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and other natural disasters can happen across Asia. Especially in those countries based near the Ring of Fire. Natural disasters are not covered as standard by most providers, but we have add-on cover available. Get help with delayed and missed departures and accommodation.
  • Any exclusions: We cannot cover you if you’re travelling somewhere that the Department of Foreign Affairs advises against all or all but essential travel. This is also the case if you’ve been told you’re not fit to travel by a medical professional. You won’t be covered if you make a claim due to something that happened when you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You’ll also invalidate your policy if you don’t declare any pre-existing medical conditions. Always read our Policy Wording for full details and other exclusions.

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for Asia

Can you get travel insurance for Asia if you have a pre-existing medical condition?

Standard providers might turn you down. However, as a specialist provider, we can offer travel insurance for Asia if you have pre-existing medical conditions. Whether you have diabetes, a heart condition, or arthritis, we consider more than 1,300 conditions. We can even help if you have more than one at once.

Does travel insurance for Asia cover multiple countries in one trip?

Yes, you can cover multiple countries in Asia on one trip. Just let us know where you plan to go when getting your quote. You can do this online for up to 10 countries. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting even more, give our team a call.

Does Asia travel insurance include cruise cover automatically?

Cruise cover is not included as standard with most travel insurance policies. At JustCover, we offer add-on cruise protection, so if you’re looking for travel insurance for a South East Asia cruise or elsewhere, we can help. Get protection for missed port departures, cabin confinement, cruise interruption and more.

Is Turkey in Europe or Asia for travel insurance?

We like to keep things simple at JustCover. Although the country spans two continents, the whole of Turkey is included under our European travel insurance policies. Get protection for emergency medical expenses, travel delays and more. Whether you’re taking in the hustle and bustle of Istanbul, the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia or the beaches of Antalya.

Do you need a visa for Asia?

This will depend on the Asian country you’re visiting and the length of your trip. Some countries grant Irish passport holders visa-free entry for short trips. These include Singapore and Malaysia. Others require you to get a visa in advance or on arrival. It’s important to check both well in advance of your trip and before you go, as rules can change. The Department of Foreign Affairs website contains lots of information on visas and other entry requirements.

Do Irish citizens get free healthcare in Asia?

There are no reciprocal health agreements between Ireland and countries in Asia. Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will also not work. The only way to access emergency medical care in most Asian countries will be by proving you can pay. Either from your own funds or using travel insurance.

When should your Asia travel insurance policy start?

If you want cover for unexpected cancellation for certain reasons, buy your policy as soon as possible. You can get Asia travel insurance as early as 12 months before your trip.

If you’re buying a policy last-minute, don’t worry! You can do this on the day of departure, as long as you haven’t gone through customs in Ireland yet.

Are there age limits on Asia travel insurance?

Many standard providers will have an age limit, but that’s not the case with JustCover. We have no upper age limit because we think everyone deserves to enjoy their holiday. We can provide senior travel insurance for Asia for:

We can even help if you have pre-existing medical conditions. Get cover, then get on with looking forward to your trip.
