Do you need travel insurance for Bali?
Travel insurance for Bali isn’t a mandatory entry requirement, but it’s a smart move. While the Indonesian island is a dream destination, even paradise can have its pitfalls.
From lost bags to medical mishaps, our Bali insurance can protect you from costly surprises. It covers you for emergency medical care, trip disruption, cancellations and more.
It’s so important that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) strongly recommends Irish citizens take out insurance for all their travel to Bali. Here’s why:
- Covers emergency medical expenses. A hospital stay in a private facility in Bali can cost around €1,000 per night. We offer up to unlimited cover for medical expenses, but that’s not all. We also have a 24/7 emergency medical helpline that’s there when you need it.
- Covers repatriation. Getting home from Bali in an emergency isn’t cheap. An air ambulance from Southeast Asia to Ireland can cost €100,000 without insurance.
- Natural disasters can disrupt travel. The island is prone to volcanic activity and earthquakes. Adding natural disaster cover to your Bali trip insurance can help if your plans are affected.
- Gives extra protection. The DFA advises Irish holidaymakers to take extra care when visiting Indonesia. That includes Bali. While most trips go smoothly, our Bali travel insurance means you’re covered if plans change unexpectedly.

How much does Bali travel insurance cost?
The cost of Bali travel insurance varies from holidaymaker to holidaymaker. It also depends on how you like to holiday and how much cover you need. But the good news? JustCover lets you shape your policy to suit your plans.
Here’s what can influence the price you’ll pay:
- How long you’re away. A quick island escape costs less than an extended adventure.
- Your age. Our cover has no upper age limit, but older holidaymakers may pay a little more, due to increased health risks.
- Any health conditions. Pre-existing conditions can affect the cost. But JustCover considers over 1,300, and you might pay less than you expect.
- What you’re bringing. Taking an expensive laptop or valuable jewellery? You may want extra protection.
- What you’re doing. From surfing in Uluwatu to a jungle hike, we cover over 100 activities as standard. However, extreme adventures may need a little extra cover.
- How often you travel. Single trip cover is great value for one-off holidays, but annual multi-trip insurance could save you money if Bali’s just the beginning.

Understanding healthcare in Bali
Bali is a stunning destination. But if you need medical care while you’re there, it’s important to know how the system works:
- Private hospitals come at a cost. There are three Bali International Medical Centre hospitals located in Kuta, Nusa Dua, and Ubud. These private hospitals are known for offering international-standard care with English-speaking staff. They’re popular with tourists, but treatment there can be expensive.
- Public healthcare is limited. In more remote areas, medical services can be basic. For anything beyond minor treatment, you may need to be transferred to a private hospital.
- Medical costs can add up quickly. Emergency treatment or medical transfers can easily run into the thousands of euros. The DFA warns that good medical care in Indonesia can be very expensive.
- Bring your prescription to Bali. If you take regular medication, make sure to bring a copy of your prescription with you to Bali. According to the DFA, this isn’t just a good idea – it’s a legal requirement. Some medications that are common in Ireland may be restricted or even banned there. Having your prescription helps avoid any issues at customs.
- Travel health insurance for Bali is essential. Our comprehensive cover can protect you from unexpected medical bills, hospital stays and emergency repatriation.
Do you need vaccinations for Bali?
No vaccines are mandatory for entry. But several are strongly recommended to protect your health while in Bali. Always consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least six to eight weeks before departure.
Here are the key recommendations:
- Routine vaccines. Make sure you're up to date with standard immunisations, for example, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and diphtheria-tetanus-polio (DTP).
- Hepatitis A. Recommended for most holidaymakers, as Hepatitis A can be contracted through contaminated food or water.
- Typhoid. Also advised due to potential exposure via food and drink.
- Tuberculosis and hepatitis B. Only recommended for longer stays.
- Rabies. Only recommended for holidaymakers spending time in rural areas.
- Japanese Encephalitis. May be advised for extended stays in rural areas, especially during the rainy season.
What to do in a medical emergency in Bali
If you get injured or feel unwell during your trip to Bali, help is out there. Knowing what to do can make all the difference.
- Seek medical attention. For emergencies, dial 112 or 118 for ambulance services.
- Contact your insurer. Once you’re safe, call our 24/7 emergency medical helpline. We can guide you to appropriate care and help with paperwork or payments.
- Keep records. Hold onto receipts, medical reports and any documentation. These will be essential if you need to make a claim later.

What our customers say
“Customer care was excellent when I contacted them. As we were over 65, I thought there would be a lot of questions on health. This was not the case. Just standard questions which customer care were only too happy to help with.”
see full reviewDo you need a visa for Bali?
Yes, you do, but it’s easy to sort out. Irish passport holders can apply for an Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) before they travel, or get a Visa on Arrival when they land in Bali. It’s valid for 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days. You’ll need a passport with at least six months’ validity and proof of onward travel.
Indonesia now uses a handy All Indonesia platform. This combines immigration, customs and health forms into one simple online process. Just complete it before you fly and have your QR code ready for arrival. There’s also a small Tourist Levy to pay when you arrive in Bali. Check the latest entry requirements with the DFA before you go.
Bali travel tips and recommendations
From lush rice terraces to golden beaches, Bali is a destination that truly delivers. Here are some helpful tips to keep your trip smooth, safe and stress-free:
- Stay safe in the sun. Bali’s tropical sun is strong, even on cloudy days. Pack high-SPF sunscreen and reapply often, especially after swimming.
- Watch what you drink. ‘Bali belly’ is common, but preventable with a few simple precautions. Stick to bottled water and avoid ice in drinks unless you’re sure it’s purified.
- Bring your prescription. If you take regular medication, carry it in its original packaging along with a copy of your prescription. It’s a legal requirement in Indonesia and helps avoid any issues at customs.
- Ride carefully. Scooters are popular in Bali, but accidents are common. Only ride if you’re experienced and wear a helmet. All our policies include cover for motorcycling under 125cc. That’s as long as it’s not racing, not off-road, and you must hold an Irish licence equivalent.
- Keep your belongings close. Petty theft can happen in busy areas. Use a crossbody bag, avoid flashing valuables and keep your passport secure.
- Be aware of natural risks. Bali sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so volcanic activity and earthquakes are possible. Stay informed and follow local advice if alerts are issued.
- Know your healthcare options. Private hospitals like BIMC offer excellent care but can be expensive. Travel insurance is essential to cover emergency medical costs if you fall ill or get injured.
- Respect local customs. Dress modestly when visiting temples. Remove shoes when asked, and be mindful of local etiquette.
Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for Bali
Will travel insurance cover issues related to volcanoes?
Yes, it can. But only if you’ve opted to add natural disaster cover to your policy.
Bali sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for volcanic activity. While eruptions are rare, they can cause serious disruption. Add natural disaster cover to your Bali trip insurance to get protection for:
- Travel delays caused by volcanic activity.
- Accommodation and travel costs if your trip is delayed or cancelled.
- Alternative accommodation if you can’t reach your original hotel.
- Damaged or lost personal belongings.
There are a few things to bear in mind:
- We can only cover volcanic disruption if you’ve added natural disaster cover to your policy.
- We can’t cover the cost of a hotel upgrade. You’ll need to stick to the same level as your original booking.
- You must have bought your policy or booked your trip before the volcanic activity became public knowledge.
For more details on our natural disasters cover, check the Policy Wording.
What travel insurance do you need for Bali?
The DFA strongly recommends having comprehensive Bali travel insurance – and it’s easy to see why. Medical care can be costly, especially at private hospitals. Bali carries a higher risk of natural disasters, road traffic accidents and petty crime, compared to some other destinations.
At a minimum, your policy should include medical cover and cancellation protection. But depending on your plans, a few optional extras can ensure there are no gaps in your cover.
- Gadget cover. Perfect if you’re bringing valuables like a laptop or camera.
- Natural disaster cover. Helpful if your accommodation or travel plans are disrupted by volcanic activity or earthquakes.
- Golf cover. Teeing off at one of Bali’s scenic courses? This can cover green fees and lost equipment.
- Cruise cover. Bali’s a popular stopover. If it’s part of your cruise itinerary, this ensures you’re protected on and off the ship.
- Hazardous activity cover. We include over 100 activities as standard. But if you’re planning something particularly adventurous, this add-on is a must. Read our Policy Wording to see if your chosen activity is covered.639.*
Will the EHIC cover you for your trip to Bali?
No, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) won’t cover you in Bali. It only applies to countries within the EU and a few others in the European Economic Area. Bali is in Indonesia, so you’ll need worldwide travel insurance to make sure you’re protected.
Is Bali safe for travel?
Bali is a popular and welcoming destination for holidaymakers. Most visits are trouble-free. But like anywhere, it’s wise to stay aware and prepared. The DFA advises holidaymakers to exercise caution when travelling to Indonesia. This is mainly due to risks like petty theft, natural disasters and health concerns.
Pickpocketing can happen in busy tourist areas, so keep your belongings secure. Bali is also located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are possible, although serious events are rare. And while the food is delicious, ‘Bali belly’ is a common complaint. Best stick to bottled water and eat at reputable places.
Are there maximum age limits for travel insurance for Bali?
Not at all. Whether you’re 18 or over 85, you can enjoy everything Bali has to offer with JustCover. Our policies are designed to support holidaymakers of all ages. We even have travel insurance designed specifically for seniors.
The only age-related restriction applies to winter sports cover, which isn’t usually needed for trips to Bali. But just so you know, winter sports cover is only available to holidaymakers aged 65 and under at the time of issue. Other than that, you’re good to go.
Where is Bali for travel insurance?
Will travel insurance cover scooters or mopeds in Bali?
Scooters and mopeds are incredibly popular on the island, especially for short trips and exploring off the beaten track. But it’s worth knowing that motorcycle accidents are common in Bali and Lombok. The DFA advises that only experienced drivers should use them.
With the right protection in place, you can enjoy the ride. All our policies include cover for motorcycling under 125cc. That’s as long as it’s not racing, not off-road, and you must hold an Irish licence equivalent. If you’re planning to ride something more powerful, you’ll need to add our hazardous activity cover to your policy.
When should you purchase Bali travel insurance?
To help you get the most out of your policy, it’s best to buy your Bali travel insurance as soon as your holiday is booked. That way, you’re protected from cancellation from the moment your plans are confirmed.
Trips to far-flung destinations such as Bali can be expensive. Buying early cover helps recoup pre-paid expenses if you need to cancel for unforeseen reasons. Our Policy Wording has all the details.
You can still buy insurance right up until you leave Ireland. But if you wait, you’ll miss out on cancellation protection. So as soon as your flights are booked and your itinerary starts to take shape, pop travel insurance on your checklist. It’s a simple step that could make all the difference.
Can you get travel insurance for Bali if you have a pre-existing medical condition?
You can with JustCover. We consider over 1,300 medical conditions and can even cover holidaymakers with multiple health concerns. The key is to declare your condition when you take out your policy. That way, you’ll know exactly what’s included and avoid any surprises if you need to make a claim.
Is healthcare free in Bali for tourists?
Healthcare in Bali isn’t free for tourists. You’ll need to pay for any treatment you receive, whether it’s a quick clinic visit or a hospital stay. Private hospitals offer excellent care with English-speaking staff. But costs can add up quickly, especially in emergencies. That’s why having health insurance for your Bali trip is so important. It means you won’t be left footing the bill if the unexpected happens.
Is ‘Bali belly’ covered by travel insurance?
In most cases, travel insurance can help if you’re struck by ‘Bali belly’. The common name for holidaymaker’s diarrhoea, ‘Bali belly’ is usually mild. But if symptoms worsen and you need medical care, your policy can help cover the costs.
With JustCover’s 24/7 emergency medical helpline, you’ll have support if the unexpected happens. Just keep in mind there’s usually an excess. That’s the amount you’ll pay towards any claim. If you only need over-the-counter medication or a quick doctor’s visit, the cost might fall below the excess, meaning you wouldn’t be able to claim. But if your symptoms are more serious and you need hospital treatment, your cover could save you from a much bigger bill.
