Can you get travel insurance if you have high blood pressure?
You can with JustCover. Our high blood pressure travel insurance is designed for people with hypertension. It helps protect your trip if health issues affect your plans. And, with access to a 24/7 medical helpline, support is there when you need it.
Our fuss-free policies mean your holiday stays focused on the adventure, not the worry. It covers emergency treatment, cancellations, lost bags and more. We can also cover you if you have multiple medical conditions – not just your hypertension.
Why do you need travel insurance for high blood pressure?
Planning a holiday should be exciting for everyone. If you’re one of the one in four adults in Ireland living with hypertension, travel insurance can keep you protected if things don’t go quite to plan. That’s one less thing to worry about!
Whether it’s lost medication or a surprise trip to the local clinic, the right cover means you’re not left navigating it alone. Here’s why it matters:
- Travel can raise your blood pressure. Even if your blood pressure is usually stable, changes in altitude, climate, diet or stress can affect it. In fact, 20% of people with hypertension experience a rise in their blood pressure when they travel. That’s a worry, given that uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke, heart attack and kidney disease.
- Emergency medical treatment can be expensive. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, hospital bills abroad can quickly run into thousands of euros. Medical evacuations may cost thousands more. Without travel insurance for hypertension, you’d have to pay emergency medical costs yourself.
- Travel insurance covers blood pressure medication. Common blood pressure meds like ACE inhibitors or beta blockers may be inexpensive in Ireland, but prices vary wildly overseas. In some countries, a single prescription refill can cost €50 to €100. Travel insurance for hypertension covers medication, so you’re not left counting the cost.

Do you have to declare high blood pressure for travel insurance purposes?
Yes, you do need to declare high blood pressure on your travel insurance, even if it’s well-managed. Hypertension is classed as a pre-existing medical condition. Telling us about it helps make sure your cover works exactly as it should.
Declaring conditions like hypertension isn’t about adding extra admin. It’s about making sure your trip runs smoothly. Whether it’s emergency treatment abroad or a cancellation before you travel, not declaring your high blood pressure could mean your policy won’t cover the costs if something unexpected happens.
With JustCover, you’ll need to tell us about any condition where, in the last two years, you’ve:
- Taken prescribed medication
- Received medical treatment or advice from a hospital, clinic, GP or via remote consultation
- Been offered or received palliative care
- Been placed on a waiting list that could affect your travel plans
- Been advised of a terminal illness
Being upfront about your high blood pressure lets you relax on holiday, knowing you’re fully covered.
How to get travel insurance if you have high blood pressure
Having high blood pressure won’t stop you from exploring the world at JustCover. As a specialist provider of travel health insurance for over 1,300 medical conditions, we make it easy to get the cover you need. There are no hoops to jump through, and no medical exam required.
Getting started is simple. Apply online or over the phone and you’ll be guided through a short medical screening. You’ll need to declare all your pre-existing conditions (including high blood pressure) and answer a few health-related questions.
Once you’ve completed the questionnaire, we’ll tailor your quote based on your individual circumstances. You’ll only be offered policies that are suitable for you, so you know you’re properly covered.
What to expect in the medical questionnaire
The medical screening is designed to be quick and straightforward. You’ll be asked questions like:
- Have you been diagnosed with high blood pressure by a medical professional?
- Are you currently taking prescribed medication to manage it?
- Have you had any hospital admissions, tests or changes in treatment in the last two years?
- Do you have any related conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes?
These questions help us find the right policy for you. It’s important to answer them honestly. If you don’t declare a condition, your policy could be invalidated if you need to make a claim.
How much does travel insurance cost for people with high blood pressure?
Travel insurance for people with high blood pressure may cost a little more than a standard policy. That’s simply because there’s a slightly higher chance of needing medical treatment abroad.
But at JustCover, your policy is built around you, not just your condition. If your blood pressure is well-managed, your quote is likely to be lower than someone with more complex health needs. We look at the full picture, so you get fair, personalised cover.
The exact price you’ll pay depends on a few different factors:
- Your destination: Countries like the USA or Canada have higher healthcare costs. Other countries, like South Africa or Brazil, carry a greater risk of crime. That’s why travel insurance tends to be more affordable for European destinations. They generally pose fewer risks and have lower healthcare costs.
- The length of your trip: A weekend trip costs less to insure than a month-long adventure. Whether it’s illness, injury or travel disruption, the longer you’re away, the more opportunities there are for things to go wrong.
- Your overall health: If your blood pressure is well-controlled, your premium may be lower. But if you have other conditions, this can increase the likelihood of a claim – and the amount you’ll pay.
- Your age: Senior holidaymakers are statistically more likely to need medical treatment abroad. As a result, their premiums tend to be a bit higher to reflect that added risk.
- Any extra cover options: Planning a cruise, a ski trip or a golf holiday? Adding extra insurance to cover these types of holidays can cost more.
How can people with high blood pressure get cheaper travel insurance?
Travel insurance that covers high blood pressure doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are a few smart ways to keep costs down:
- Travel with others. Booking group or family insurance can sometimes work out cheaper per person.
- Pick the right type of cover. If you’re only travelling once this year, a single trip policy might be all you need. But if you’ve got more adventures planned, annual cover could work out cheaper in the long run.
- Think about where you’re going. Some destinations (like the USA or Canada) have higher healthcare costs. Others may carry greater risks like crime or natural disasters. Your choice of location can have a big impact on the price of your cover.
- Choose the right duration. Make sure your policy covers the exact dates of your trip. No need to pay for extra days you won’t use.
- Follow your doctor’s advice. If your blood pressure is stable, this can help lower your risk – and the amount you’ll pay.
- Look at your plans. From golf to gadgets, we can tailor your policy to your trip. But you might not need every add-on.

Will an EHIC cover you abroad if you have high blood pressure?
Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is useful, but it’s not enough on its own.
If you're travelling within the EU, your EHIC gives you access to public healthcare at the same cost as local residents. It can be a real help if you need emergency treatment for your high blood pressure while abroad.
But the EHIC doesn’t cover everything. It won’t pay for private care or medical repatriation. And it won’t cover you if your personal belongings are lost or stolen.
That’s why the Department of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends that Irish nationals take out comprehensive travel insurance, even when travelling to countries that accept the EHIC.

Having high blood pressure won’t put a stop to your travel plans. With the right preparation, you can travel smart, no matter where your adventures take you.
- Choose your destination wisely. High-altitude places like La Paz or Nepal can raise blood pressure due to lower oxygen levels.
- Get a check-up. Visit your GP to confirm you're fit to travel, especially if you're planning any strenuous activities.
- Declare your condition. Tell us about your high blood pressure, even if it’s well-managed. Not doing so could invalidate your policy.
- Pack smart. Bring enough medication for your trip (plus extra for delays). Keep it in your hand luggage. Include a copy of your prescription in case you need a refill abroad.
- Fly safely. Drink plenty of water and skip salty snacks and caffeine. Stretch your legs regularly to boost circulation. Avoid alcohol in the air. It can worsen altitude-related symptoms and interfere with medication.
Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for high blood pressure
Can you fly with high blood pressure?
Flying is generally safe if your blood pressure is stable. But before you go, it’s wise to check in with your GP, especially if your readings have been fluctuating.
The HSE recommends regular monitoring and sticking to your prescribed medication routine. So pack your meds in your hand luggage, with a little extra, just in case. Bring a copy of your prescription, and stay hydrated during the flight.
If you’re flying long-haul, try to stretch your legs every couple of hours to support circulation. And of course, make sure your travel insurance covers high blood pressure.
Can you go to high altitude destinations if you have high blood pressure?
High altitudes mean lower oxygen levels. That can temporarily raise your blood pressure, even if it's well controlled. That doesn’t mean you need to skip the Andes or the Alps. But it’s a good idea to speak to your GP before you go. They can confirm whether your condition is stable and advise on any precautions. If you experience dizziness, headaches, or shortness of breath, take it seriously. Rest or seek medical help.
Remember, as with any condition, you must not travel against the advice of a medical professional, as this could invalidate your cover. Always check our Policy Wording for full exclusions and requirements.
What blood pressure is too high to fly?
There’s no official “cut-off” number that makes flying unsafe. But if your blood pressure is extremely high, typically above 180/110 mmHg, it’s best to speak to your GP before boarding a flight.
High blood pressure at this level may increase the risk of complications, particularly during long-haul flights or at high-altitude destinations. Most people with well-managed hypertension can fly safely, but always follow your doctor’s advice and declare your condition when buying travel insurance.
If your doctor says you’re not fit to travel, and you still go ahead with your trip, your policy may not cover you. Check the medical warranty in your Policy Wording for more details.
Is high blood pressure considered a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance?
Yes, high blood pressure is considered a pre-existing health condition for travel insurance. You should declare it, even if your blood pressure is controlled by medication.
A pre-existing medical condition is any condition that falls within the medical warranty. You must tell us if you or anyone else insured on your policy has:
- In the last two years, taken any prescribed medication or received medical treatment or advice at a hospital, clinic, GP surgery or via remote consultation or received or been offered palliative care;
- Been placed on a waiting list that could cause you to cancel or cut your trip short;
- Been advised of a terminal illness.
It’s not about making things complicated – it’s about making sure you’re properly protected. If you don’t declare something you already knew about, it could invalidate your policy. That means it won’t cover you if you need treatment related to your blood pressure while you’re away.
Read our Policy Wording for full details.
Is there an age limit on high blood pressure travel insurance?
At JustCover, we believe holidays are for everyone. That’s why we don’t set an upper age limit on our travel insurance for high blood pressure. Our senior policies can provide the cover you need, without the age-related cut-offs many standard providers impose.
Just tell us about your high blood pressure and any other medical conditions in our simple medical questionnaire. We’ll tailor your quote to suit your health and your holiday plans. The only exception? We can’t cover winter sports if you’re over 65.
What happens if your blood pressure changes after you buy your travel insurance?
If your doctor adjusts your medication or if there’s a notable change in your condition, it’s best to let us know. That way, your policy stays valid and you know you’re fully protected.
At JustCover, we want you to feel confident and cared for. So if anything changes, just get in touch. We’ll guide you through what to do next.
What to do if you need medical assistance for your blood pressure while abroad?
If you experience issues with your blood pressure while travelling, your health comes first. Get the medical help you need straight away – don’t wait. Once you're safe and stable, call our 24/7 emergency medical helpline. We can support you with next steps, including any cover for treatment or repatriation if needed.
For full details on what to do, read our Claims page.
Do you need to declare your high blood pressure if you’re not on medication?
Even if you’re not currently taking medication, you’ll need to declare your high blood pressure if you’ve had any medical advice, treatment, or check-ups for it in the last two years. That includes GP visits, remote consultations or monitoring.
It’s all part of making sure your cover is valid and tailored to your needs. Just answer our simple medical questionnaire when getting your quote. We’ll take care of the rest.
