What is couples' travel insurance?
Couples travel insurance is a policy designed to cover two people who are in a relationship and travelling together. Whether you're heading off on a romantic city break, a beach holiday in the Med, or backpacking across Southeast Asia, this type of policy provides joint cover under one plan.
It typically includes protection for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, delays, and more, just like a standard single policy. But with couples insurance, you’ll both be covered under the same policy, making it simpler and often cheaper than buying two separate plans.
Do you need couples' travel insurance?
If you’re an Irish couple heading abroad together, a joint policy is often the smartest and most cost-effective way to get protected. It’s not a legal requirement by any means, but here’s why it should be an essential part of your trip:
- It’s often cheaper. A couple's policy can cost less than buying two separate single policies.
- It’s more convenient. Fewer forms, one renewal date, and less admin to worry about.
- You’re covered together. Almost one in three travel insurance claims from Irish travellers are due to cancelled trips. If you both need to cancel due to illness or an emergency, your policy has you both covered.
- Tailored for real travel plans. Whether it’s one trip or several over the year, you can get single-trip or annual cover for both of you.
Whether you're off on a weekend in Rome or exploring the history of Egypt, having joint travel insurance helps make sure your getaway is remembered for the right reasons.
Is couples' travel insurance cheaper than two separate single policies?
In most cases, yes. Couples' travel insurance tends to be more cost-effective than buying two individual policies. It also streamlines the process: one application, one renewal date, one set of documents. That means less admin and better value for your money.
It’s worth noting that the exact savings can vary based on your ages, destination, trip length, and any pre-existing conditions. But generally speaking, Irish couples travelling together will find that a joint policy is the more budget-friendly option.
The only time it may not be cheaper is if you and your partner have very different circumstances. For example, if:
- One of you might want adventure sports cover for paragliding in Turkey or skiing in Canada.
- The other may need cover for pre-existing medical conditions, like asthma or diabetes.
- You might also want to make sure your luggage and valuables are protected if you’re bringing electronics or particularly expensive items.
A joint policy is still a great option if you’re travelling as a couple, and is usually cheaper than two separate plans.
Who is couples travel insurance for?
Couples' travel insurance is designed for two people travelling together on the same trip. That said, you’d need to have been living at the same address for more than 6 months to qualify.
This type of policy is ideal for:
- Holidaying couples. Whether you're heading off on a staycation in Ireland, a romantic city escape to Spain (around 2.5 million Irish tourists travel to Spain annually), or a summer getaway to the States.
- Couples on cruises or tours. Where you’re both booked on the same organised itinerary and staying together throughout.
Couples’ policies are tailored for two people only. If you’re travelling with children, friends or extended family, a family or group travel insurance policy may be a better fit.
Can I travel alone with couples' travel insurance?
Couples' single trip insurance is designed to cover two people travelling together on the same itinerary. In most cases, both people named on the policy must be travelling together for the cover to apply. If one of you travels without the other, your policy might not be valid for that trip, especially for cancellation or medical claims.
However, if you’re planning on taking several trips over the next 12 months, then our couples' annual multi-trip policy allows you each to travel alone. The same goes for our group travel insurance policies, which can cover up to 10 people.

The benefits of couples’ travel insurance
Choosing couples travel insurance over two individual policies has a few big advantages, especially if you're heading abroad together more than once a year.
- Better value and less admin. Couples’ policies often work out cheaper than buying two separate single policies. Plus, one shared set of documents and one renewal date keeps things simple!
- Joint cover for shared plans. If your trip gets cancelled, delayed, or cut short, the policy can cover both of you under the same claim.
- Emergency help for both travellers. If something unexpected happens, you’re both protected, whether it’s lost baggage, illness, or a missed flight.
- Flexible add-ons. Tailor the policy to suit your needs. For example, one of you might need cover for adventure sports.
How much is couples' travel insurance?
The cost of couples’ travel insurance varies depending on a few key things, just like with any travel policy. The good news is that it’s often cheaper than taking out two separate single policies.
Here's what typically affects the price:
- Destination. Travel in Europe is usually cheaper to insure than trips to the USA, Canada or Asia.
- Trip duration. Longer couples’ holidays will usually cost more to insure than quick weekend breaks.
- Policy type. Single-trip cover is cheaper upfront, while annual multi-trip policies offer better value if you and your partner travel often.
- Your ages. The cost may increase with age, particularly for travellers over 65.
- Medical conditions. You’ll need to declare any pre-existing conditions, which may affect your premium. If you don’t, you could end up paying a lot of money for medical treatment abroad. Even minor surgery done privately in many EU countries can cost €20,000. And remember, your EHIC will only cover you for medically necessary, state-provided healthcare.
- Activity levels. Adding cover for things like skiing, scuba diving, or hiking can increase the cost.
What about couples who are living at different addresses?
To qualify for couples' travel insurance, both people must be living at the same address for more than six months. If you don’t meet this requirement, you won’t be able to get couples cover. We’d recommend opting for two individual policies or a group travel insurance plan.

Couples' travel insurance tips and things to know
Before you buy, here are a few key things Irish couples should keep in mind when arranging joint travel cover:
- Travel together. If you’re going on a single trip, both travellers usually need to start and finish the trip together for the policy to apply. However, if you have annual travel insurance, you can travel solo.
- Declare health conditions for both partners. Make sure any pre-existing medical issues are declared by each person named on the policy.
- Cover for different interests. If one of you plans to do riskier activities (like scuba diving or skiing), make sure your policy includes activity upgrades (even if the other partner isn’t participating).
- Annual cover can save you money. If you travel as a couple more than once a year, an annual policy could work out cheaper.
- If one of you cancels, double-check your cover. Our policies allow the remaining traveller to still be covered. Make sure to read our Policy Wording for full details.

What our customers say
“For the last couple of years, I have bought annual travel insurance for my wife and I from JustCover. I am a repeat customer because it is really easy to buy online, it’s also very good value, and they do not penalise me because of my senior status. I opt only for basic cover for all our trips to Europe over the year. I like the good customer service and timely reminders..”
see full reviewFrequently asked questions about couples' travel insurances
Will we both be covered for medical emergencies and cancellations?
If you're both named on the policy, you’ll each be covered for medical emergencies, cancellations, repatriation, and other insured events. This means if one of you falls ill, gets injured, or can’t travel due to a covered reason, your policy should help cover the costs.
What’s included in the policy for couples?
Couples travel insurance typically includes the same cover you’d expect from a standard policy, just shared between two people. This means medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost baggage, travel delays and more. Add-ons like winter sports or gadget cover are also available if you need them.
Can we do activities like skiing, snorkelling or cycling on our couples' travel policy?
Standard couples travel insurance will cover you for lower-risk activities such as snorkelling, hiking or casual cycling. For higher-risk activities like skiing, scuba diving or mountain biking, you’ll need to add activities and sports cover. It’s important to check the full list of included and optional activities before you go.
Can we travel separately and still be insured?
It depends on the type of policy you choose. With annual couples travel insurance, you’re both typically covered even if you travel separately. However, for single trip policies, both travellers must start and end the trip together for the cover to apply. If you plan to travel apart more often, you might want to consider individual annual cover or group travel insurance instead.
Do we have to be married to get couples travel insurance?
Not at all. If you have both lived at the same address for more than 6 months, you can get couples travel insurance.
How much medical cover do we get?
It depends on the policy you choose. With JustCover, you can get up to unlimited medical expenses and repatriation cover, which includes treatment abroad and transport back to Ireland if medically required. Always check the Policy Wording to understand the exact limits.
Is baggage cover automatically included?
Yes, but with a maximum claim limit and per-item limits. Baggage cover typically includes loss, theft or damage to your belongings. If you're travelling with high-value items like electronics or jewellery, you may need to upgrade your policy or insure them separately.
