What is water sports travel insurance?
A spur-of-the-moment banana boat ride. A pre-planned day of windsurfing. For every activity you do abroad, you’ll need insurance to cover it. Holiday insurance for water sports covers emergency medical expenses if you get injured. But it can also cover other holiday mishaps, from a lost bag to a cancelled trip.
JustCover’s flexible policies can keep up with all your holiday plans. We cover over 100 sports and activities as standard – and 37 of those are water sports! And with flexible add-ons for more extreme water sports like coasteering or hydro speeding, we’re here for whatever floats your boat.
What are the benefits of travel insurance for water sports?
Water sports are exhilarating, but they also come with unique risks. Whether you're jet-skiing or parasailing, the right travel insurance means you can enjoy the thrill – not worry about something going wrong.
Here’s how JustCover’s travel insurance with water sports cover keeps you protected:
- Covers repatriation: No one likes to think of the worst happening on a fun-packed holiday. But according to Water Safety Ireland, an average of 118 Irish nationals drown each year. If you need to be flown home after an accident in the water, travel insurance can cover the cost. That’s great news if you’re in a water-sport hot spot like Thailand. Repatriation from Thailand could set you back around €70,000.
- Covers emergency medical costs: Modern jet-skis can reach speeds in excess of 60mph – and most accidents are collisions. Our travel insurance policies cover jet-skiing as standard. And our 24-hour emergency assistance team is available to call, day or night.
- Covers cancellations: Surfing in the USA. Paddleboarding in Dubai. Trips to the world’s best water sports destinations can be expensive. Water sports travel insurance with cancellation can help you recoup pre-paid costs if you have to cancel your trip.
Which water sports are covered?
Whether you're swimming, snorkelling or catching a wave, we've got your water sports covered. Our standard travel insurance includes 37 low-risk water sports as standard, so you’re protected from the moment you get your feet wet.
Feeling adventurous? If your plans include high-risk activities such as shark diving, black-water rafting or hydro speeding, you can easily add extra cover. Just select the hazardous activities add-on when you get your quote. We’ll tailor your protection to match your adventure.
Which water sports are considered low-risk and covered as standard?
Our standard travel insurance policies cover a range of popular water sports at no extra charge. However, with the exception of fishing and sailing holidays, you’ll only be covered if the activity is NOT the main purpose of your trip.

- You’re adequately supervised and taking part in an organised session or excursion.
- You’re not competing in a league or formal competition.
- You’re using approved facilities (either natural or purpose-built) that are recognised by local or national authorities.

How much does water sports travel insurance cost?
The amount you pay for water sports travel insurance depends on a few key factors. But the good news is, we tailor your quote to match your plans, so you only pay for the cover you need.
Here’s what affects the price:
Your chosen water sport. Many activities like paddleboarding, snorkelling and jet skiing are covered as standard. But if you're planning something more daring (like shark diving or hydro speeding), you may need our hazardous activity add-on.
Your age. Generally, premiums increase with age. But JustCover has no upper age limit, so you’re still eligible for cover.
Your health. Pre-existing medical conditions can affect the cost, depending on whether they increase the chance of you needing medical care abroad.
Your destination. Some countries, like the USA, have higher medical costs.
Trip duration. Longer holidays mean more time for things to go wrong. They may cost a little more to insure.
Because every traveller is different, we don’t offer one-size-fits-all pricing. Instead, we provide tailored quotes to make sure your water sports cover fits you perfectly.

Will the EHIC cover injuries from water sports?
Yes, it will. If you're travelling to countries in the European Economic Area (EEA), having a valid EHIC is a smart move. The European Health Insurance Card covers emergency medical treatment that can’t reasonably wait until you return to Ireland. It doesn’t matter how you get injured. Even if it's from a tumble off a paddleboard or a slip on a jet ski, you’re covered on the same basis as local residents.
That said, the EHIC isn’t a substitute for travel insurance. It won’t cover things like medical repatriation or private healthcare. So while it’s great for emergency treatment, you should still take out travel insurance with water sports cover to make sure you're fully protected.
Do water sports count as extreme sports?
It depends on the insurer – but with JustCover, you’re in safe hands. We cover 37 different water sports as standard, at no extra cost. That includes activities some insurers might label as “extreme”. Even things like jet-skiing, parasailing, surfing and scuba diving (up to 30 metres). So if you're planning on doing some casual water sports on your trip, you’re probably already covered.
There are a few exceptions. Adrenaline-fuelled activities like coasteering, shark diving (in a cage) or white water rafting above Grade 3 may need our hazardous activity cover. Not sure if your chosen activity counts as an adventure sport? Check our Policy Wording for a full list.
Are professional or competitive water sports covered?
We can’t cover you for any professional water sports. And if you’re taking part in an organised league or competition, we won’t cover any of the standard activities either.
But some competitive water sports are included as standard in our travel insurance policies. Things like water polo, sailing and canoeing.
For more dangerous competitive water sports like tall-ship crewing or high diving, you’ll need to add our extreme sports add-on.
Can you buy cover for water sports on the day?
Fancy a spontaneous surf lesson – or got your eye on a jet ski? If your chosen water sport is one of the 37 we cover as standard, you’re already protected. No extra cover needed! That includes holiday favourites like parasailing, paddleboarding and even scuba diving (up to 30 metres).
However, we can’t offer new policies once you’ve already departed. Our travel insurance is only valid if your trip begins and ends in the Republic of Ireland. That’s why it’s important to get everything sorted before you set off.
Is there an age limit for water sports travel insurance?
A love of the water has no age limit. And neither do we! Whether you're planning to paddleboard at 75 or parasail at 85, our senior policies cover all ages. And just like our standard policies, a wide range of water sports are included as standard. We can also cover most pre-existing medical conditions, as long as you're fit to take part in your chosen activity.
The only policy with an upper age limit is our winter sports add-on. This optional extra is only available to travellers up to age 65 at the time of issue.
Will your kit and equipment be covered?
Bringing your own water sports gear on holiday? Whether it’s your trusty wetsuit or snorkel set, JustCover’s water sports travel insurance has you covered. If your equipment is lost, stolen or damaged while you’re away, we’ll help get you back in the water again.
Most personal items are protected as standard. But if you’re travelling with high-value kit, like an underwater camera, adding our valuables extension gives an extra layer of protection.
Will you be covered for personal liability?
It depends on your chosen activity. At JustCover, our standard travel insurance includes personal liability cover for many different water sports. If an accident happens while you're on a pedalo, surfboard or canoe, we can help protect you from unexpected costs.
However, some water sports, like jet skiing or white-water rafting, are excluded from personal liability cover due to the added risk involved. Even if you add our hazardous activity extension, it won’t include personal accident or liability cover for those high-adrenaline pursuits.
The best way to be sure? Check your Policy Wording to see if your chosen water sport includes personal liability.
Can you get water sports travel insurance for your whole group?
Yes, you can. Water sports are always more fun with friends – and JustCover’s group travel insurance makes it so easy. It covers up to 10 adults travelling together, with a wide range of water sports included as standard. From paddleboarding to snorkelling, everyone can dive in without worrying about extra paperwork.
If someone in your group is planning something a bit more daring, like shark diving or hydro speeding, it’s best they take out their own policy. That way, their adventurous plans won’t affect the rest of the group’s cover or cost. For everything else, we’ve got your whole crew covered.
Do you need additional cover for any water sports?
Wondering if you need to take out separate surfing or scuba diving insurance? At JustCover, we cover 37 different water sports at no extra cost. Alongside popular aquatic adventures like snorkelling and windsurfing, we even include some that may be considered an extreme sport by other insurance companies. Water sports such as:
- BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter)
- Cave and river tubing
- Jet boating
- Jet skiing
- Parasailing
- Parascending
- Scuba diving (up to 30 metres deep)
- Surfing
- White water rafting (grades 1, 2 & 3)
You won’t need to buy additional cover for these activities – and a whole lot more! However, there are some caveats to consider. For example, we’ll only cover you for white water rafting if you are adequately supervised.
However, some water sports require additional cover. At JustCover, these include:
- Cascading
- Coasteering
- High diving
- Hydro speeding
- Scuba diving (Qualified, up to 50 metres)
- Sea canoeing/kayaking
- Shark diving (inside cage)
- Tall-ship crewing
- White or black water rafting (grades 4 to 6)
- Yachting (racing or crew) outside territorial waters
Can you get water sports travel insurance if you have a pre-existing medical condition?
A pre-existing medical condition doesn’t have to keep you off the water. Our water sports travel insurance can cover a wide range of medical conditions.
When you get a quote, we’ll ask a few simple questions about your health. Things like whether you’ve had recent treatment, take medication, or have any activity restrictions from your doctor. This helps us tailor your cover to suit both your health and your chosen water sports. You can focus on the fun, knowing your policy is built around you.
Do you need specialist cover if you’re doing multiple water sports on one trip?
Not with JustCover. Our standard travel insurance includes cover for 37 different water sports. So whether you’re windsurfing, jet-skiing, paddleboarding or all three, you’re already protected as part of your package. Just check the Policy Wording to make sure your chosen activities are included.
There are a few exclusions to be aware of. For example, we cover white water rafting up to Grades 1, 2 and 3 – and that’s if you’re adequately supervised. If you're planning something more adrenaline-fuelled, like higher-grade rapids or extreme sports, you may need to add our hazardous activity cover.
Also, while casual water sports are covered, we can’t insure trips where water sports are the main purpose – like a dedicated surfing holiday. The exception? Fishing⁴ and sailing, which can be covered as ‘activity holidays’ in our Policy Wording.
Will you be covered if you hire equipment abroad?
No, you won’t. Whether it’s a wetsuit or a kayak, JustCover’s water sports travel insurance only covers personal belongings – not hired gear. If something happens to equipment you’ve rented, you’ll need to check with the activity company to see if their own insurance applies.
However, if you’re bringing your own water sports equipment, you’re in luck. JustCover’s sports travel insurance can help if your personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged while you’re away. Most items are covered as standard. But if you’re travelling with expensive kit, adding the gadget and valuables extension gives extra protection
Are water sports covered during stopovers or layovers?
We want to make sure you’re fully covered, wherever your journey takes you. So when you're booking your travel insurance, we’ll ask you to list all the countries you plan to visit. Don’t worry about brief layovers or airport transfers. You only need to include destinations where you’ll actually leave the airport and enter the country. It’s a simple step that helps us tailor your policy to your trip.
Leaving the airport and planning to squeeze in some water sports? With JustCover, your standard policy covers many popular water sports free of charge – from surfing to water skiing. But certain extreme water sports may require a policy add-on for full protection.
If your stopover includes more extreme water sports such as sea kayaking, shark diving or coasteering, make sure you add the hazardous activity extension. Not sure if your particular water sport is included? Give us a call.
