Can you get travel insurance if you have a mental health condition?

We can cover mental health conditions as long as you tell us before your trip. We understand that travelling with mental health conditions can be stressful and limit the enjoyment of your trip.

We cover over 1,300 medical conditions. That means we’ll work with you to tailor a policy to your specific needs. Whether it's Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), depression, schizophrenia or something else, we’ll make sure you’ve got the comprehensive cover you need for a stress-free holiday.

Why do you need travel insurance if you have a mental health condition?

Travelling with a mental health condition can bring extra challenges. Anything from managing medication abroad to finding support if you experience a setback while you’re away. Having the right travel insurance means you’re protected if your condition affects your trip, whether that’s needing medical care overseas or cancelling your plans due to ill health.

Mental health conditions are far more common than many realise. So travel insurance protections are relevant to a large number of holidaymakers:

  • Around 1 in 4 people in Ireland experience a mental health problem each year. So, if your condition flares up before your trip, travel insurance could help you recover costs for cancelled flights or accommodation.
  • The World Health Organisation reports that over 5% of adults worldwide live with depression. This makes it one of the most common conditions that can impact how people cope with the stress of travel.
  • In Ireland, 1 in 10 people under 25 believe they’re currently experiencing depression. For young holidaymakers especially, knowing you’re covered if you need to cut a trip short or access help abroad can offer security.

With travel insurance that covers mental health, you don’t have to worry about unexpected care costs. Or losing money if you’re too unwell to travel. Instead, you can focus on what matters: feeling safe, supported, and able to enjoy your time away.

What types of mental health conditions are covered?

Alongside physical medical conditions, we also cover a wide and diverse range of mental health conditions. To be sure you’re covered, you must declare your condition during the quote process.

These are just some of the mental health conditions we cover. If your condition isn’t listed, please ask us. We’ll do our best to include it in your policy.

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

What does JustCover’s mental health travel insurance cover?

Get cover for conditions relating to your physical and mental health. Travel insurance for mental health protects you as soon as you book. Make sure to read our Policy Wording for more details on what is and isn't included.

What's covered

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation costs – This includes the costs of tests, medications and procedures necessary to treat an illness or injury while abroad. You’ll also be covered for repatriation, making sure you return safely to Ireland.

Cancellation – Cover for flight and accommodation costs if an unexpected event means you have to cancel your trip before you go.

Curtailment – Cover if you need to return home early following an emergency.

Travel delays – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time.

Personal belongings – You’ll be covered if your baggage or its contents are lost or stolen.

Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday.

Legal protection cover – Provides cover for your legal expenses if you have to claim compensation or damages due to something that happened while you were away on holiday.

What's not covered

Claims below the value of the excess – This is dependent on your policy level.

Trips outside the region of cover – If you go somewhere not covered in your policy documents.

Known events or circumstances – Claims related to problems that you knew about before booking the trip or buying the travel insurance are not covered.

Medical conditions you don’t declare – You need to declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions.

Choosing not to travel – We know that sometimes plans change, but you’re only covered for cancellation where the reason falls within the policy terms and conditions.

Travelling against medical or government advice – We can’t cover you if you’ve been told not to go by a doctor or your medical team, or if you’re going away for treatment. We also can’t offer you a policy if the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against all but essential travel to a destination.

Do you have to declare mental health conditions for travel insurance purposes?

Yes. You must declare any mental health condition when buying travel insurance. If you don’t, you may not be covered for claims relating to it.

For example, if you live with anxiety and need treatment or medication to manage it abroad, you’ll only be covered if you declare it. Similarly, if you have depression and need to cancel your trip, you’ll only get cancellation cover if you’ve told us about it.

Being open about your health ensures your policy works for you when you need it most.

How to get travel insurance if you have a mental health condition

Getting travel cover is simple. You’ll need to complete our application form online or by phone, and provide some details about your medical history.

What to expect in the medical questionnaire

During your medical questionnaire, you’ll need to answer questions like:

  • Have you been diagnosed with a mental health condition?
  • Do you take regular medication?
  • Have you needed hospital treatment in the last two years?
  • Has your condition ever stopped you from travelling before?

These questions help us understand your needs and make sure you get the right level of cover.

How much does travel insurance cost for people with mental health conditions?

As with any medical condition, the price of travel insurance may be slightly higher for people with mental health conditions.. This is because you’re more likely to make a claim or cancel your trip unexpectedly. If you honestly and accurately complete our medical questionnaire, we can find the best price for your quote.

Here are a few things that may affect the cost of your travel insurance:

  • Your age: Premiums are generally higher for older holidaymakers, especially if you’ve had recent treatment or hospital care.
  • Your destination: Trips to countries like the USA or Mexico cost more because medical care is very expensive there.
  • The length of your trip: Longer trips may mean a greater chance of needing support, which can raise the cost.
  • Your medical history: If you’ve had a hospital stay due to depression or needed emergency care for anxiety or panic attacks, this can increase the premium.
  • Your current treatment: Regular medication for conditions like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may affect the price, especially if your prescriptions are complex.
  • Planned activities: Certain activities like scuba diving, skiing or long hikes could trigger symptoms such as anxiety or panic attacks. These often require additional cover.

Mental health travel insurance with other pre-existing medical conditions

It’s not uncommon for people with mental health conditions to also have other medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart problems, or asthma. Finding cover can sometimes be difficult because of this. We can cover over 1,300 conditions, but to get covered, you must declare yours during the quote process. If you don't you won’t be covered for anything that happens related to your conditions.

Mental health conditions we can consider include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

We also cover physical conditions like:

Will an EHIC cover you for medical assistance for mental health conditions abroad?

No. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only gives you access to state healthcare in EU countries, often at the same cost as locals. But it does not cover private treatment, emergency air ambulances back to Ireland, or any support related to mental health emergencies.

This means Irish holidaymakers with mental health conditions should always take out travel insurance. That way, if you need specialist care or have to cut your trip short, you won’t be left facing large bills.

How to prepare for your trip

Preparing well can make travelling with a mental health condition much easier:

  • Plan your medication. Bring enough for your whole trip, plus extra in case of delays. Carry it in its original packaging with a doctor’s note. It’s also a good idea to pack extra medication. This way, if you lose or run out of anything, you have backups.
  • Check local rules. Some medicines are restricted abroad. The last thing you want is to have medication confiscated by security. Look up the laws in your destination before you travel.
  • Identify pharmacies and hospitals. If you need additional medication or to visit a doctor, make sure you know where they are and how to get there.
  • Share your plans. Tell a trusted friend or family member where you’ll be and how to reach you. If anything should go wrong during your trip, you can also call our 24/7 helpline.
  • Know your triggers. Think about what situations could affect your mental health and plan coping strategies in advance. Bring some home comforts to help you through any stressful parts of your trip. For some, this might be travelling long distances or feeling anxious in new places.
  • Get covered. The right travel insurance goes a long way. Should anything relating to your mental health condition or any conditions you declare affect your trip, we’ll be able to cover you. Medical treatment can be expensive without travel insurance. So, be sure to arrange yours.

The HSE offers some very useful advice on mental health difficulties and on how to look after your mental health. While the guidance isn’t specific to travel or living abroad, much of it remains relevant and helpful wherever you are.

Tips for travelling with a mental health condition

  • Stick to a routine. If you have a specific routine you follow at home, try to stick to it. Whether it’s taking medication at the right time or planning out the day’s activities and eating times. Make sure you’re able to fit your routine around your trip.
  • Rest and recharge when you can. Living with a mental health condition can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Be sure to take some time for yourself if you need to. It’s common to become overstimulated in new places, so make sure you have safe places where you can relax when needed.
  • Use wellness tools. Pack things that help you feel calm, such as journals, books, or meditation apps.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine. Both are notorious for heightening anxiety. If you’re prone to panic attacks or feeling anxious, stick to decaffeinated drinks and cut down on alcohol.

What to do if you need help with your mental health while abroad

It’s okay if you begin to feel overwhelmed or need medical help while abroad. If you start to struggle while travelling, here’s what you should do:

  • Seek medical help. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital if you feel unsafe or unwell. You should also contact your GP. They will be able to support and offer advice over the phone.
  • Reach out to friends and family. Sometimes a familiar voice can make all the difference. Let them know you’re travelling and how you’re feeling. Just speaking to someone you trust can help calm nerves and put your mind at ease.
  • Use your insurance. You can always call our 24/7 emergency helpline. We’ll be able to guide you to the right treatment and cover your costs.

There’s also plenty of other support avenues to help. These include Samaritans Ireland, Mental Health Europe resources and even the Irish Embassy if you need advice or want to connect with local services.

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for mental health conditions

Are mental health conditions considered a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance?

Yes. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD and others are treated as pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll need to declare them when applying for travel insurance.

Can you be covered for more than one mental health condition?

Absolutely! Many people live with more than one condition, and we take this into account. You’ll just need to declare each one during the medical questionnaire.

What if your condition is undiagnosed?

If you’re waiting for test results or haven’t received a formal diagnosis yet, it’s still important to tell us about any symptoms, tests, or medical advice you’ve had. You can do this when filling out the medical questionnaire. We’ll usually provide a quote that excludes cover for the undiagnosed condition.

Please note: If your condition changes after purchasing your policy – for example, if you receive a diagnosis or new medication – you must let us know straight away. This helps make sure your cover remains valid.

Always read your Policy Wording for full terms and conditions.

Can you cancel a holiday due to anxiety?

If your anxiety is declared and covered on your policy, cancellation cover may apply. Always check the Policy Wording to make sure cancellation for mental health conditions is included.

Do you need to declare stress for travel insurance?

Mild stress might not need to be declared, but if stress has led to a GP visit, medication or time off work, it may count as a medical condition. It’s best to declare it to be safe.

Are there age limits for mental health travel insurance?

No strict limits apply, but premiums tend to increase with age. We have no upper age limit and offer options for older holidaymakers, including those over 65 or over 80 with declared mental health conditions.

Will you need a doctor’s note or medical certificate to get travel insurance for mental health conditions?

Not always. In most cases, you’ll just need to complete a medical questionnaire. However, if you need to make a claim, we may request a doctor’s note to confirm your condition.

Will any travel companions be covered if you need to return home early due to your mental health condition?

Yes. If you need to cut your trip short due to a covered mental health condition, many policies will cover your travelling companions too, so they can return with you.

Do you need to update us if your medication or condition changes before you travel?

Yes, you’ll need to. If there are changes in your medication, diagnosis or treatment, you must tell us as soon as possible. Not doing so could affect your cover or invalidate a claim.

What should you do if you lose your medication abroad?

Contact a local pharmacy or hospital as soon as possible. We will be able to cover the cost of replacement medication if it’s lost or stolen. Always carry a copy of your prescription and extra medication, as losing or running out of medication is more common than you’d think!

When should you buy mental health travel insurance?

The best time to buy mental health travel insurance is as soon as you book your trip. That way, you’ll be covered straight away for cancellation costs if your mental health condition prevents you from travelling.
