How much does Egypt travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance for Egypt will vary in price, depending on you and your trip. We’ll ask you a few simple questions to help us tailor your quote to your needs. Factors that impact price include:

  • How long you’re going away for. The cost of your policy will be impacted by how long you need to be covered for. Protection for a long weekend will cost less than a policy for two weeks in the sun.
  • Your age. At JustCover, we’re proud to have no upper age limit, unlike many standard providers. Policies for senior travellers may cost more, as you’re more likely to make a claim.
  • Your pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a medical condition, your policy may cost more. This is based on your answers to our medical questionnaire. We’ll use these to decide if you’re more likely to need to make a claim.
  • Any extra cover you need. We’re happy to say we include 100 activities as standard. You can find a full list in our Policy Wording. If you need extra cover for any extreme sports, water sports, cruises or gadgets, we can help. Take a look at our range of extra cover

Egypt travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

If you need emergency medical care in Egypt, it can be very expensive for tourists. It’s important to make sure you’re covered with travel health insurance for Egypt, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Otherwise, you’ll face high costs from your own pocket.

Not all standard providers will cover you if you have a  pre-existing medical condition. At JustCover, we’re specialist medical providers. Meaning we can consider more than 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, from cancer to epilepsy

All you need to do to get cover is declare your conditions. Then you’ll answer our simple medical questionnaire. Make sure you do this accurately, as you could invalidate your policy if you don’t. Conditions we can consider include:

Will the EHIC cover you for your trip to Egypt?

No, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) won’t work in Egypt. If you need emergency medical help, you’ll need to prove you can pay for it or have travel insurance for Egypt. If you can’t, you may be refused treatment.

Costs can easily reach tens of thousands of euros, especially if you need medical repatriation back to Ireland. That’s why holiday insurance for Egypt is essential.

Understanding healthcare in Egypt

Egypt has both public and private healthcare facilities available. However, the quality of care varies drastically. It is common to face expensive charges or to be charged more than you should. The Department of Foreign Affairs warns that: “Tourists, particularly in resorts, report being overcharged for treatment and medicines”.

Our 24/7 emergency medical helpline team can help if you face issues. Get access to English-speaking support over the phone with travel insurance for Egypt. We help you go away with confidence, knowing you’ve made the smart choice.

What to do in a medical emergency in Egypt

Follow local guidance on how to contact emergency medical services in Egypt. Remember, the phone number to call is different depending on the country you’re in, so research this before you go. You should also look at which emergency facilities and services will be available nearby.

Once you’re safe and receiving treatment, call our 24/7 emergency helpline as soon as possible and before making a claim with us. You can find more information using our claims page and Policy Wording.

Do you need vaccinations for Egypt?

You should speak to your GP or follow HSE guidance on which travel vaccinations are needed. Guidance changes regularly, so it’s important to speak to a medical professional about this. Do this with plenty of time before your holiday, as some vaccinations require a number of doses over a few months.

Vaccinations they may suggest include:

  • Hepatitis A and Typhoid for most travellers. Along with being up to date with your routine vaccinations for life in the UK.
  • Dengue, Hepatitis B, Polio, Rabies and Typhoid for some travellers.
  • Proof of Yellow Fever and Polio vaccinations may also be required for some travellers to enter the country.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

Many people are still enjoying holidays in Egypt’s main tourist destinations. However, it’s important to follow official advice. Guidance on travel to Egypt and areas to avoid is changing regularly. Read all the advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs before planning your trip. As well as checking in regularly for any changes.

The DFA website also provides information on other travel risks, such as road travel, pickpocketing and local laws and customs. We cannot cover you if you’re travelling somewhere that the DFA or WHO advise against all or all but essential travel. See our Policy Wording for more details and exclusions.

Egypt travel tips and recommendations

From the ancient monuments of Aswan to the waters of Hurghada. Follow our tips below for a smooth holiday:

  • Speak to your doctor before you go. This is especially important if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. They will be able to give you advice on whether you’re fit to travel and any precautions you should take. You should also ask them about travel vaccinations. Your airline may need a fit-to-fly certificate from your doctor if you have a condition, so check in advance.
  • Research local customs and laws. The DFA advises that “Egypt is a conservative and mostly Muslim society”. Be respectful and read up on anything you should do to avoid offence, especially if you’re visiting places of worship or during Ramadan or other religious festivals.
  • Pack for the changeable weather. It’s important to be prepared for the sun and take precautions. However, it can also be very cold at night. So pack a variety of clothes for your trip.
  • Tipping is common. Tips will be expected by most people helping you on your trip, so take plenty of small notes and coins in preparation.
  • Be careful when taking photos. The DFA advises that: “There have been incidents of tourists being arrested for taking photos outside government buildings, train stations and other edifices such as bridges.”
  • Buy holiday insurance for Egypt. This is only way to know you’re covered if you face a medical emergency. You may be refused treatment if you can’t prove you have a policy or another way to pay.

Common travel risks in Egypt

Thousands of Irish tourists enjoy holidays in Egypt every year. However, all destinations carry risks. Read up on some of them below and see the DFA website for full details.

  • Crime: Crime is relatively low in Egypt, but as a tourist, you can be a target. Keep your things secure when you’re out and about, especially in busy areas. Avoid carrying all your valuables together and don’t show large amounts of cash. Organise cars to pick you up at your accommodation and avoid unlit streets and alleys. Be aware that as a tourist, you may be a target for scams. These include fake tour guides and offers of marriage. Read more on the DFA website.
  • Terrorism: The DFA advises: “Although there are additional security measures in place to protect the country's major tourist resorts and sites, there is a risk that tourist areas and other places frequented by foreigners may be specifically targeted by terrorists.” Check the DFA website for any advice before you go. Keep up-to-date with local news and follow the guidance of local authorities.
  • Female travellers: “Sexual harassment is common on the street and in taxis. This can quickly escalate into sexual assault,” says the DFA. If you’re a female holiday-maker, read the DFA’s advice on staying safe while you’re away. This includes using women-only carriages in the metro and sharing your location on your phone.
  • Activities and transport: Make sure any activities you take part in are run by qualified, reputable companies. If you plan to go scuba diving, make sure you check with your doctor before you go. Check that any activities you have planned are covered by travel insurance. Read the DFA advice on transport in Egypt before you go; road accidents are common.

Do you need a visa to visit Egypt from Ireland?

Your passport must be valid and have at least 6 months remaining from your date of arrival. Passport cards cannot be used. Irish citizens on holiday can often get a visa on arrival, but you should double-check if this is the case for you.

If you’re visiting certain resorts for less than 15 days, you may only need a free entry permission stamp on arrival. These resorts include Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. Read the DFA website for full information.
