What is hiking travel insurance?
Love to walk, hike or trek? You’re in good company. According to Sport Ireland’s Get Ireland Walking campaign, 2.77 million of us regularly hit the trails.
There’s no reason to stop doing what you love when you’re abroad. But whether you’re close to home or tackling the Inca Trail, trekking isn’t risk-free.
Hiking travel insurance is designed to cover you if something goes wrong – from strains and sprains to something more serious. It can also protect you from classic holiday mishaps, too. Things like lost or stolen bags, trip cancellations and delays.
What are the benefits of travel insurance for hiking?
Walking holiday insurance is your safety net if your trek takes an unexpected turn. Here’s why it matters:
- Covers emergency medical expenses. Ankle sprains and lower limb injuries are common hiking injuries. In the Alps alone, half of all emergency calls from hikers aged 50 to 70 are due to falls. Our travel insurance policies cover hikes below 3,000m as standard. And our 24-hour emergency assistance team is available to call, day or night.
- Covers trip cancellation. Multi-day treks often involve prepaid guides, food and accommodation. If illness or injury forces you to cancel, hiking travel insurance can cover your non-refundable costs.
- Covers repatriation. Hiking in the Himalayas? Medical evacuation from this part of the world can cost thousands, and it’s not covered by the EHIC scheme. Hiking insurance ensures you’re not left high and dry.
- Covers your equipment. Trekking insurance can also protect your kit, from boots to backpacks. Taking something more valuable? Our gadgets extension can cover that, too.
Which types of hiking are covered?
With JustCover, over 100 low-risk sports and activities are included as standard. No extra paperwork, no extra cost. That includes hiking, rambling and trekking on recognised routes up to 3,000m.
If you're heading for higher ground or doing something more extreme, you’ll need to add hazardous activity cover to your policy. Some high-risk adventures may not be covered at all, so it’s worth checking our Policy Wording before you book your trip.
Which types of hiking and trekking are considered low-risk and covered as standard?
Hiking and trekking on recognised trails under 3,000m is classed as low-risk and included in our standard policies, even if it’s the main purpose of your trip. That covers most popular walking holidays, including:
- Ben Nevis, Scotland – 1,345m
- Tour du Mont Blanc, Alps – peaks around 2,500m
- Camino de Santiago – the highest elevations typically range between 1,000m and 1,500m.
We can also cover other walking activities, such as fell walking, orienteering and rambling. Some come with full cover for the entire time you're away. For others, we only provide cover if the activity isn't the main reason for your trip. You'll find these listed as ‘activity holidays’ in the Policy Wording.
Here are a few examples of the kind of hiking and walking activities we cover as standard. Can’t find yours in the list? Take a look at the Policy Wording, or give us a call. We’ll tell you if it’s covered
Which hiking and trekking activities are considered hazardous or extreme sports?
If you’re hiking between 3,000m and 6,000m, you’ll need to add hazardous activity cover. These routes involve higher altitudes, thinner air and more demanding terrain. Examples include:
- Schönbichler Horn, Austria – 3,134m
- Hochfeiler, Alps – 3,510m
Some trekking activities carry a higher level of risk than others. If you're planning something more extreme, let us know before you go.
Here are a few examples of common trekking activities that require hazardous activities travel insurance. For a full list, have a look at our Policy Wording.
Which hiking or trekking activities won’t be covered?
Some high-risk hiking activities are excluded from cover altogether. If your route goes above 6,000m or involves mountaineering, we won’t be able to cover you. That’s even with the hazardous activity add-on. Always check the Policy Wording before you go.
Examples include:
- Mount Everest summit – 8,848m
- Aconcagua summit, Argentina – 6,961m
- Ama Dablam, Nepal – 6,812m
- Lobuche East, Nepal – 6,119m
What does hiking and trekking travel insurance protect for?
At JustCover, we know the best views come after the hardest climbs. But we also know things don’t always go to plan. That’s why our hiking travel insurance is built to keep pace with your plans:
- Covers your equipment. Lost your walking poles in transit? Backpack gone walkabout? Our standard policies cover your kit for loss, theft or damage. Bringing high-tech outdoor equipment? Add our valuables extension for up to €2,000 cover.
- Looks after you. Trips and falls are common when you’re hiking. Knowing you’re covered for medical expenses will help you focus on your recovery. And with our 24/7 emergency helpline, you won’t be on your own.
- Protects your plans. Guided tours and prepaid accommodation can be expensive. If illness, injury or other unexpected events force you to cancel your hiking trip, you could claim back non-refundable expenses.
- Covers curtailment. Twisted your ankle on day two of a week-long trek? If you need to head home early, hiking insurance can help cover the costs.

With JustCover, you’re protected for medical emergencies, cancellations, lost bags and more. Want to play golf or ski, as well as hike? Flexible options let you tailor your policy to your plans. You can even add extra cover for valuable items, like a GPS device, an action camera or specialist outdoor tech.

The best time to buy your hiking travel insurance is as soon as you book your trip. That way, you’re protected from the start. Buying early can be a real lifesaver if plans change unexpectedly due to illness, injury or other disruptions.
Hiking holidays often involve prepaid accommodation and guided tours. Travel insurance with hiking cover helps you recover those expenses if you need to cancel for a covered reason.

Do you need hiking and trekking travel insurance for domestic trips within Ireland?
From the Wicklow Way to the Burren Trails, Ireland offers some of the most scenic and accessible hiking routes in Europe. But while you may not need emergency medical cover, taking out travel insurance for your Irish hiking trip is still a good plan. It can act as your financial safety net for the things that can go wrong, even when you’re close to home.
Here’s how it can help:
Covers lost, stolen or damaged equipment.
Hiking equipment isn’t cheap – and it soon adds up. A good pair of boots alone can cost between €120 and €200. If your bag is lost or delayed en route to your destination, trekking holiday insurance can help cover the cost of replacing essentials. That way, your trip isn’t ruined before it begins.
Covers trip cancellation or curtailment
Many hikers pre-book accommodation along multi-day routes like the Kerry Way. A five-day self-guided tour with accommodation can cost between €649 and €919 per person. If you fall ill or need to cancel unexpectedly, travel insurance can help recover those costs.
Covers guided walking tours
Ireland’s guided hikes range from €35 for a day hike in Tipperary to €369 for a three-day Wicklow tour with meals and accommodation. If your tour is cancelled, insurance can help cover the loss. Some operators may even require proof of cover before you join.
Hiking and trekking travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
We want everyone to do more of what they love on holiday. With no upper age limit, our hiking and trekking insurance covers all pre-existing medical conditions. Even if you’re hiking with multiple conditions, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

see full reviewTips for safe hiking and trekking
Hiking and trekking abroad can be an unforgettable experience. And, with a few smart precautions, it can be a safe one, too. These tips will help you stay protected while you explore:
- Know your route and altitude. Research your trail’s difficulty, terrain and elevation. Stick to trails that suit your fitness and hiking background.
- Share your plans. Let someone know your planned route and return time. You can also enable location sharing on your phone or smartwatch
- Check your policy will cover your chosen route. JustCover’s policies include hikes, treks and rambles on recognised routes, under 3,000m. If you’re going above 3,000m, or trying something like gorge walking, you’ll need to add the hazardous activity extension.
- Pack smart and stay prepared. Bring essentials like a map, compass, first aid kit, water, snacks and layers. Don’t forget sun protection as UV exposure increases at altitude.
- Respect the weather. Mountain weather can change fast. Always check the local forecast before you set off. Be prepared to turn back if conditions worsen.
- Acclimatise. Altitude sickness can start around 2,500m and become more likely above 3,000m. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated and know the signs – headache, nausea and dizziness. Your hiking travel insurance can cover emergency medical treatment for altitude sickness. But only if you’re hiking on a recognised route, within the covered altitude range.
- Join a guided group if you’re unsure. Guided treks are a great option for unfamiliar terrain.
- Don’t rely solely on tech. Phones and GPS devices are great, until they run out of battery or lose signal. Always carry a map and compass as backup.
Frequently asked questions about hiking and trekking travel insurance
Will the EHIC cover injuries from hiking and trekking?
Yes, it will. If you’re injured in an EU country, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can help with access to state-provided healthcare. But it’s not a substitute for travel insurance, especially when it comes to hiking and trekking.
The EHIC covers essential medical treatment, often at reduced cost or free of charge. So if you trip or slip in the Alps, you’re able to access local healthcare. But it doesn’t cover private healthcare, repatriation, or trip cancellations. It won’t cover your gear or travel delays, either.
So while the EHIC is a helpful backup, it’s not enough on its own. For full protection, make sure you’ve got proper hiking holiday insurance in place before you go.
Are hiking tours and guided group treks covered?
Yes, they are, as long as your route and altitude fall within the policy limits. We can even cover you if the hiking tour or guided group trek is the main purpose of your trip.
Here’s what you need to know.
- Guided hikes on recognised trails up to 3,000m are covered as standard.
- Group treks with a tour operator or organised group are covered, as long as the route you’re taking is recognised.
- Activity holidays where hiking is the main focus are covered under our standard policy.
- Higher-altitude treks (between 3,000m and 6,000m) can be covered with our hazardous activity extension.
Just check the Policy Wording carefully to make sure your chosen trek fits within the guidelines. If you’re unsure, we’re here to help.
Can you purchase a policy after your trip has already started?
We know plans can change last minute. But with JustCover, you need to arrange your hiking travel insurance before you leave home. Policies can only be issued if your trip begins and ends in the Republic of Ireland. We’re not able to offer new cover once you’ve already departed.
The good news? If your spontaneous hike is on a recognised route and stays below 3,000m, you’ll already be covered under our standard policy. That includes some of the most popular walking trails worldwide.
Is altitude sickness covered?
Yes, it is – as long as your trek falls within the altitude limits of your policy.
Altitude sickness (also known as Acute Mountain Sickness) can affect anyone hiking at high elevations. It typically starts at around 2,500m. Symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue become more common above 3,000m, especially if you ascend too quickly.
Altitude sickness affects up to 50% of hikers who ascend to 3,000m too quickly. If not treated promptly, it can cause serious complications like pulmonary or cerebral oedema.
JustCover’s hiking travel insurance is designed to support you if altitude sickness strikes, but only if you have the correct policy in place. Hiking up to 3,000m? You’re covered as standard.
Hiking between 3,000m and 6,000m? You’ll need to add the hazardous activity extension. Hiking above 6,000m? Unfortunately, this falls outside our cover limits.
Is there a maximum age limit for hiking travel insurance?
Not at all. Whether you're planning a trip to the Alps at 75 or a gentle ramble at 85, our senior policies support hikers of all ages. We can also cover most pre-existing medical conditions, as long as you’re fit to take part in your chosen activity.
The only age restriction applies to our winter sports add-on. That’s only available to travellers up to age 65 at the time of issue. For everything else, you’re good to go.
Will your hiking kit and equipment be covered?
Bringing your own hiking gear on holiday? Whether it’s your favourite boots, backpack or trekking poles, JustCover’s hiking travel insurance has you covered. If your equipment is lost, stolen or damaged while you’re away, we’ll help get you back on the trail.
Most personal items are protected as standard. But if you’re travelling with high-value kit, adding our valuables extension gives extra protection.
Is trekking as part of a charity event covered?
Yes, trekking for charity is typically covered under JustCover’s hiking travel insurance. That’s as long as:
- You’re hiking on recognised routes
- You stay under 3,000m (or up to 6,000m with the hazardous activity add-on).
- The event isn’t part of a competitive league or timed race.
If in doubt, check the Policy Wording or give us a call.
Can you get hiking travel insurance for a whole group?
Yes, you can, and JustCover’s group travel insurance makes it easy. It covers up to 10 adults travelling as a group. Hiking and trekking on recognised routes up to 3,000m is included as standard, even if that’s the main purpose of your trip. For example, a group walking holiday.
Is someone in your group planning a trek at a higher altitude? They’ll need to take out their own policy with the hazardous activity add-on. That way, their adventure won’t affect the rest of the group’s cover or cost.
Will travel insurance cover a helicopter rescue if needed?
Unexpected situations can happen whenever you’re taking part in adventurous activities abroad. Our policies do not cover search and rescue costs incurred by government or private organisations. But it does cover repatriation for medical emergencies.
Would hiking travel insurance cover climbing Kilimanjaro?
JustCover’s standard policies include hiking on recognised routes up to 3,000m. Since Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895m, you’d need to add the hazardous activity extension if you’re hiking to the summit. This flexible add-on covers hiking between 3,000m and 6,000m on recognised trails.
Kilimanjaro is a well-established trekking route, not a technical climb, so it typically qualifies under this add-on.
Just be sure to:
- Confirm the route is recognised and guided (most are).
- Add the hazardous activity cover when booking.
- Check the Policy Wording for any specific exclusions.
Can you get hiking holiday insurance if you have a pre-existing medical condition?
A pre-existing medical condition doesn’t have to keep you off the trail. JustCover’s hiking travel insurance can cover a wide range of medical conditions – and there’s no upper age limit.
When you get a quote, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions about your health. You’ll need to tell us whether you’ve had recent treatment, take medication, or have any activity restrictions from your doctor. This helps us tailor your cover to suit both your health and your hiking plans.
Do you need specialist cover if you’re doing multiple activities on one trip?
Not with JustCover. All our policies include cover for hiking (on recognised routes up to 3,000m) as standard. But they also cover a whole alphabet of activities at no extra cost, from abseiling to zorbing.
Just check the Policy Wording to make sure your chosen activities are included. If you’re planning something more ambitious, like quad biking or mountaineering, you’ll need to add our hazardous activity cover.
Will you be covered if you hire hiking equipment abroad?
JustCover’s hiking and trekking travel insurance covers your own personal belongings, not hired equipment. If you hire walking poles or a GPS device, you’ll need to check whether the rental company’s insurance covers them.
Bringing your own gear? JustCover’s standard policy includes cover for loss, theft or damage to your personal belongings while you’re away. And if you’re travelling with expensive kit, like a specialist camera, adding our gadget and valuables extension offers extra protection.
