Do you need travel insurance for Croatia?

Croatia has plenty to explore, from historic cities and Adriatic beaches to island hopping. Travel insurance can help if illness, a cancelled trip or a disruption changes your plans.

JustCover policies can provide cover for eligible emergency medical costs, cancellation, travel delays and lost or stolen belongings, subject to your policy terms. Before you travel, keep these points in mind:

  • Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is useful, but it isn’t travel insurance. It gives you access to necessary state healthcare in Croatia, but does not cover private treatment or emergency repatriation.
  • Island hopping can involve extra connections. Check what your policy covers if a ferry delay affects your onward travel.
  • Travel advice can change. Check the latest guidance from Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs before you book and again before you leave.

Travel knowing you have protection in place if your plans don’t go as expected.

Do you still need travel insurance for Croatia if you have an EHIC?

Yes, it’s worth considering both. Your EHIC gives you access to medically necessary healthcare within Croatia’s public system on the same terms as people insured there. You may still need to pay local charges. It does not cover private healthcare or the cost of bringing you home if you become seriously ill.

Travel insurance can provide cover beyond healthcare, including eligible emergency repatriation, cancellation and lost or stolen belongings. With JustCover, you can also contact our 24/7 emergency assistance team if you need help while you’re away. Check your policy for the cover, limits and exclusions that apply.

What your EHIC covers:

  • Medically necessary healthcare: You can access care through Croatia’s public healthcare system if you need treatment during your trip.
  • Treatment on local terms: You’ll receive care on the same terms as people insured in Croatia. This can mean paying a share of the cost for some services.
  • Prescription medicines: If a doctor prescribes medication during your trip, you can get it from a pharmacy contracted to Croatia’s public health system. A standard prescription fee may apply.

What travel insurance can add:

  • Emergency repatriation: If it is medically necessary to bring you back to Ireland, your EHIC will not cover the cost. Travel insurance may cover this, subject to your policy terms.
  • Eligible private medical costs: An EHIC does not cover private healthcare. Check your travel insurance policy to see when private treatment may be covered. commission.
  • Help during a medical emergency: JustCover’s 24/7 emergency assistance team can guide you through the next steps while you’re away.
  • Protection for other parts of your trip: Depending on your policy, you may also have cover for eligible cancellation costs and lost or stolen belongings.

Your EHIC can help you access necessary public healthcare in Croatia. JustCover travel insurance may cover eligible costs beyond healthcare, including repatriation, cancellation and lost or stolen baggage. Take your EHIC with you and check your policy’s cover limits and exclusions before you travel.

What does travel insurance for Croatia cover?

The exact cover depends on the policy level and options you choose. Always read our Policy Wording to understand what is and isn’t covered.

What's covered

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation costs – This includes the costs of tests, medication and procedures needed to treat an illness or injury while abroad. You’ll also be covered for repatriation, helping you return safely to Ireland.

Cancellation – Cover for flight and accommodation costs if an unexpected event means you have to cancel your trip before you go.

Curtailment – Cover if you need to return home early following an emergency.

Travel delays – If your journey is delayed for a reason covered by your policy, you may be able to claim for the disruption.

Personal belongings – You’ll be covered if your baggage or its contents are lost or stolen.

Personal liability – Cover for legal costs and liability if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while away.

Legal protection cover – Provides cover for your legal expenses if you have to claim compensation or damages due to something that happened while you were away on holiday.

What's not covered

Trips outside the region of cover – You won’t be covered if you travel somewhere that is not included in your policy documents.

Known events or circumstances – You cannot normally claim for a problem you already knew about before booking your holiday or buying your policy.

Medical conditions you don’t declare – You need to declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions.

Choosing not to travel – We know that sometimes plans change, but you’re only covered for cancellation where the reason falls within the policy terms and conditions.

Travelling against medical or government advice –We can’t cover you if a doctor or your medical team has advised you not to travel, or if you are travelling for medical treatment. We also can’t offer cover if Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs advises against all or all but essential travel to your destination

How much does travel insurance for Croatia cost?

There’s no fixed price for Croatia travel insurance. The cost depends on who’s travelling, what you have planned and the cover you choose. When you get a quote, these details can make a difference:

  • Your age and who’s travelling – The number and ages of the people on your policy can affect the price. For older travellers, our travel insurance for over 70s page explains what to consider when choosing cover.‍
  • How long you’ll be away – A short break in Dubrovnik and a month travelling along the coast have different trip lengths. Enter your full travel dates when getting a quote.‍
  • Your medical conditions – Declare any medical conditions requested during medical screening. Your answers help determine the cover available and its price.‍
  • Where you’re going and what you’ll do – If Croatia is one stop on a wider trip, include your other destinations. Check whether any activities you’ve planned need additional cover.‍
  • The cover you choose – Your policy level and optional extras can affect the price. It’s worth comparing the medical, cancellation and baggage limits alongside the premium.

JustCover gives you a personalised quote based on your circumstances. The best way to find out what cover will cost for your Croatia holiday is to get a personalised quote using your travel plans. It only takes a few minutes.

How can you reduce the price of your policy?

When comparing Croatia travel insurance, look at what each policy covers as well as the price. A cheaper quote may have lower limits or a higher excess. To find good value for your trip:

  • Compare Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip quotes – If Croatia is one of several holidays you’re planning, see how the total cost compares with buying separate policies.
  • Choose a suitable cover level – Compare JustCover’s Silver, Gold and Black policies for the medical, cancellation and baggage cover you need.
  • Check activities before adding extras – Look at what’s already included. If you’re taking a cruise or planning an activity that needs extra cover, add it when getting your quote.
  • Compare the excess – Check how much you would need to pay towards a claim, alongside the premium.

Use your full travel dates and declare any medical conditions requested during your quote. That helps you compare prices for cover that reflects your actual Croatia holiday.

Does travel insurance cover ferry delays in Croatia?

It may, but cover depends on the reason for the disruption, the ferry journey and the terms of your policy. If you’re island hopping, check whether your travel delay or missed departure cover applies to ferries within Croatia – particularly if a delayed sailing could affect a flight or another pre-booked connection.

If your ferry is delayed or cancelled:

  • Speak to the ferry operator first about an alternative sailing or a refund.‍
  • Ask for written confirmation of the disruption, including its cause and how long you were delayed.
  • Keep your booking details and receipts for any extra transport or accommodation.
  • Contact JustCover before making costly new arrangements if you’re unsure what your policy covers.

Allow plenty of time between an island ferry and your journey home. Extra transport and accommodation costs aren’t automatically covered, so check your policy wording before you travel.

Travel insurance for snorkelling and scuba diving in Croatia

Planning to explore Croatia’s coast or islands from the water? Its clear Adriatic waters make it a popular place for snorkelling, scuba diving and other water-based activities. JustCover includes some water sports as standard, but depth limits and activity conditions matter. Check your plans against the Policy Wording before you take part.

  • ‍Snorkelling – Included as standard to a depth of 10 metres, provided it isn’t the main purpose of your trip.
  • Scuba diving – Included as standard to a depth of 30 metres, with conditions. Qualified diving up to 50 metres requires the Hazardous Activities add-on. Qualified divers may be able to add cover for dives up to 50 metres.
  • Other water sports – Check each activity you have planned. Sea kayaking, for example, requires the Hazardous Activities add-on.

If you’re injured while taking part in a covered activity, your policy may help with eligible emergency medical costs and repatriation. Check equipment and personal liability cover separately: hired equipment isn’t covered as a personal belonging, and the Hazardous Activities add-on does not include personal accident or personal liability cover for those activities.

Before taking part, check the full activity list and conditions in your Policy Wording. This is especially important for scuba diving, deeper dives and other higher-risk activities.

If you are planning more adventurous activities during your Croatia trip, include them when arranging your JustCover policy so you can check the right level of protection before you travel.

Croatia travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

Finding travel insurance for Croatia with pre-existing medical conditions can be more difficult with some standard providers. JustCover considers more than 1,300 medical conditions, including when you have several conditions to declare.

When getting a quote, tell us about your medical conditions and complete our medical questionnaire accurately. Leaving out information we ask for could invalidate your policy, meaning claims may not be covered – even if they are unrelated to your medical condition.

Conditions we will consider include:

Understanding healthcare in Croatia

It helps to understand how healthcare works in Croatia before you travel. If you become ill or injured during your trip, where you receive treatment matters. Keep your EHIC and travel insurance details handy so you can access the right support.

Public healthcare

Ask whether the doctor or hospital is part of Croatia’s public healthcare system and show your EHIC when you receive treatment.

It gives you access to medically necessary public healthcare on the same terms as someone insured in Croatia. You may still need to pay a share of some costs, so keep your receipts.

Private healthcare

If you’re directed to a private facility, contact JustCover’s 24-hour emergency medical assistance team before arranging treatment where possible. The policy only pays for private treatment in limited circumstances, and the team may arrange a transfer to a public facility.

If you need hospital treatment

Contact the emergency medical assistance team as soon as you’re admitted to hospital. Call them too if your illness or injury means you may need to stay longer in Croatia or return home early. For simple outpatient treatment that you can pay for locally, keep your medical report and receipts so you can submit a claim when you return.

JustCover travel insurance can help with eligible emergency medical costs in Croatia. If you need to return to Ireland for medical reasons, your policy may also cover repatriation arranged through the emergency medical assistance team. Check your policy for the cover available to you.

Essential travel tips for Croatia

A little preparation can make travelling around Croatia easier, especially if you’re visiting more than one destination. Use these tips to get ready before you leave and stay organised while you’re away.

Before you go

  • Check your travel documents: Make sure your passport is valid for your stay, and check the latest entry advice before you leave.
  • Bring your EHIC: Check that it’s in date and pack it with your other travel documents. You may need it if you use Croatia’s public healthcare system.
  • Arrange travel insurance: Check that your policy covers your trip, any medical conditions you’ve declared and activities you plan to try, such as scuba diving or sea kayaking.
  • Save your policy details: Keep a copy on your phone and save JustCover’s 24-hour emergency medical assistance number where you can find it quickly.
  • Plan your journeys: If you’re visiting the islands, check ferry times and allow room in your plans for changes to crossings.
  • Pack for your plans: Check the forecast for each place you’ll visit, particularly if you’re combining coastal towns with inland trips.

While you're there

  • Keep valuables secure: Carry what you need for the day and store spare cards, documents and other valuables safely.
  • Take care in the heat: Carry water, use sun protection and plan breaks from the sun when you’re sightseeing or spending time on the water.
  • Check travel updates: Look at ferry and road information before setting off, especially when travelling between destinations.
  • Keep a backup way to pay: Carry an alternative card or some cash in case your usual payment method is unavailable.
  • Know who to call: Dial 112 for emergency services in Croatia. If you need hospital treatment, contact JustCover’s emergency medical assistance team as soon as you’re admitted.

Travel insurance for Croatia FAQs

Do I need travel insurance for Croatia if I'm an Irish citizen with an EHIC?

An EHIC helps you access medically necessary public healthcare in Croatia, but you may still have to pay a share of the cost. Travel insurance can help with eligible costs your EHIC does not cover, such as emergency repatriation, cancellation and baggage.

Is Croatia covered under JustCover's Europe policy?

Yes. Croatia falls within the Europe region in JustCover’s policy. Before you travel, check that your policy schedule covers your destination and trip dates, and that you have any extra cover needed for your planned activities.

‍

What should I do if I have a medical emergency in Croatia?

If you need immediate help, call 112 for Croatia’s emergency services. Contact JustCover’s 24-hour emergency medical assistance team as soon as you’re admitted to hospital, or if you may need to stay longer or return to Ireland early. Keep your policy number handy when you call.

‍

Can I get cover for Croatia if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you may be able to. Tell us about your medical conditions when you get a quote and answer the health questions accurately. We’ll confirm which conditions we can cover in your policy documents. Let us know if your health or medication changes before you travel.

Does travel insurance cover ferry cancellations in Croatia?

It depends on the crossing and why it was cancelled. JustCover’s travel delay cover can apply to a delayed sea crossing on your journey to or from Ireland for reasons listed in the policy, such as adverse weather or a mechanical breakdown. It does not generally cover delays to ferries used only for travel between Croatian destinations. Ask the ferry operator about a refund or alternative crossing and keep written confirmation of the disruption.

What happens if I miss my ferry while island hopping in Croatia?

Ask the ferry operator if you can take a later crossing or get a refund. JustCover generally won’t cover a missed ferry between Croatian islands, so allow plenty of time between crossings, especially if you have a flight home to catch. If a ferry disruption affects your journey home, keep written confirmation from the operator and check your policy to see whether you can claim.

Does travel insurance cover scuba diving in Croatia?

Scuba diving to a depth of 30 metres is listed as a standard activity. If you’re not qualified, you must dive under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Qualified divers may be able to add cover for dives up to 50 metres. Check your planned depth and the diving conditions in your policy before booking.

Does travel insurance cover hiking in Croatia?

Yes, hiking on recognised routes below 3,000 metres is listed as a standard activity. If you plan to hike at higher altitudes or take part in a more demanding activity, check your policy’s activity list before you travel to see whether you need additional cover.
