Do you need travel insurance for domestic trips in Ireland?
If you’re holidaying in your own country, you might think you don’t need travel insurance for Ireland. You’ll get emergency medical care through the HSE or your normal arrangements in the Republic of Ireland. However, there are still many reasons you need a policy:
- Protect your belongings: The Irish Law Society reports that the number of reported thefts reached “a five-year high” in Ireland in 2024. Don’t let your things being lost, damaged or stolen ruin your trip. Get cover with holiday insurance for Ireland. Plus, if you’re taking away something pricey, such as gadgets or golf gear, get special add-on cover.
- Protection if you unexpectedly can’t go: Have to cancel your holiday unexpectedly? Perhaps you’ve been made redundant or had a family bereavement. Get up to €10,000 cancellation cover for certain reasons.
- Help if you have to cut your holiday short: Protection for the lost portion of your holiday if you’re injured or ill and have to go home early.
- Get personal liability and legal protection cover: For certain costs if you damage someone’s property or injure them. Or if you need to make a claim against someone else.
- Cover for a range of activities: The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends you “Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers all your planned activities.” We include many activities as standard, take a look at Policy Wording. If your planned activities aren’t included, we offer a whole range of optional cover
- Extra cover when you need it: We have a whole range of optional cover to add to your policy. Plus, we offer family, group and couples options, too.
Travel insurance for the Republic of Ireland usually costs less than other policies, as emergency medical expenses cover is not included. Whether you’re visiting vibrant Dublin or Galway, or the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher or Ring of Kerry, protect your trip now and go away knowing you’re covered.
It’s important to note that travel insurance for Ireland covers domestic trips within the Republic of Ireland only. If your holiday includes Northern Ireland, you’ll need UK travel insurance as part of your policy. For full details, read our Policy Wording.

How much does travel insurance for Ireland cost?
Looking for cheap travel insurance for Ireland? A policy will normally cost less than one for a trip abroad. This is because you’ll have access to medical care through the HSE or your usual healthcare arrangements when holidaying in Ireland.
There are other factors that’ll impact the cost:
- How long you’re away for: The longer your trip, the higher the chance of needing to make a claim.
- What you’re doing and any additional cover you need: If you need to add on cover for a golf holiday, gadgets, or other things not included as standard.
- Who you want to cover: We offer family, group and couples holiday insurance for Ireland.
- Your age and any pre-existing medical conditions: Although you won’t be covered for medical emergencies, these will still impact your quote. This is because you’re more likely to need to cancel due to becoming seriously ill or injured. As a specialist travel health insurance provider, we have no upper age limit and can cover over 1,300 medical conditions.
